Can I get a LGBT friendly counseler?

I would like a gay LBGT counseler to understand me a little better and I can feel more comfortable. I appreciate it so much. Thank you for understanding.

Hi there Tommii!

Thank you so much for your question and for making this request. Perhaps you can relate to this, but it is understood through statistics that LGBT individuals may feel like they are suffering with a dual stigma when suffering with mental health issues. Moreover, coming out and speaking to friends and family members may become even more challenging due to the unfortunate social prejudices which exacerbate the anxiety that may be felt associated with this. These struggles really highlight the need for LGBT individuals to have a strong support system not only socially, but also within a professional realm as well. One of the wonderful parts of online therapy especially through the Better Help platform, is the ability to choose preferences for your counselor that you may otherwise not be able to do within traditional therapy--or at least it may be more challenging to find the right match that way! The Better Help platform allows you to choose your preferences based on what type of counselor you feel will best meet your needs. These preferences are not only related to LGBT concerns, but also your preferences in terms of counselor specialty, culture, religious beliefs, etc. The counselors on the Better Help platform include many LGBT individuals who may specialize in also helping others navigate life's stressors that are either related or unrelated to questions of gender, sexuality, and identity. Being that the relationship and rapport you have with your counselor is often what yields the most successful results and progress in therapy, it makes it even more important that you are matched with someone who you feel is someone you can relate to, trust, and be vulnerable with. Having said this, Better Help is a stigma free platform that holds up the belief that everyone deserves equal access to mental health care whenever it is needed. Through online therapy, not only is having a counselor who you are comfortable with more accessible, but you can rest assured that the treatment you receive from your counselor is one that is coming from a place of acceptance. I wish you the best of luck on your counseling journey ahead!
