Do you have to see a therapist every week?

I can’t see to figure out how to change it from a weekly session to either every two weeks or monthly. I can’t afford to do it every week right now but would still like counseling.

Hello Cc,

This is a great question. I believe that it is ultimately up to you if you are to see a counselor weekly, bi-weekly or monthly. I would say once you are educated on how the therapy process works and the advantages and disadvantages of not seeing a counselor weekly then a proper decision can be made. I totally understand the financial aspect. This is for better or worse a common barrier to treatment as therapy can be pricey. Sometimes to deal with this people seek therapy through their insurance. If one does not have insurance, then this platform (Better Help) is a cost-affordable option to see a qualified therapists without having to spend $200/$300 a session. Better Help can also sometimes work with you on the price if it is still to high. That being said, I can provide you with some education on the therapy process. Therapy isn't a quick fix, it takes time and patience. It is a real process- there are the ups and downs, wins and losses before seeing the ultimate reward. If you choose to go from weekly sessions to bi-weekly or monthly sessions (this is really less ideal), you will begin to see a slow down or become stagnant in your progress (it could be that this is ok as you are in a good place in your treatment or it could be not if you are in crisis or just beginning or getting adjusted, for example). I would recommend- if you are already seeing a counselor weekly, to have a discussion with the counselor about going to bi-weekly or monthly. The counselor will be able to help you navigate and provide you with their clinical recommendation if it would be appropriate. I would recommend stating all your concerns and assert your wishes. I hope the counselor will listen to you and take them into consideration based on your presenting needs. The counselor can't tell you what to do, but they can guide you to the right choice for you. As I said, ultimately the choice is yours! Good luck in your healing journey.
