How can I find an affordable therapy session?

I have to pay for college and other bills, and I can't really afford any sessions right now. And I really do wanna seek therapy for my own good and mental being again.

Hi Nicole,

Thank you for reaching out and taking this important step for your emotional wellness. You ask a great question, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to offer some advice to you. I recommend that you first check with your healthcare insurance benefit plan, if you have one, by calling the number for Member Services on the back of your card. You can also check online if you establish an account with your insurer, to check your Explanation of Benefits (EOB) for details on coverage, out of pocket expenses, or copays. This is also where you can search a list of providers that may accept your plan, which will allow you to choose more affordable options for care.

If it's the case that you do not have healthcare insurance benefits coverage, I recommend you sign up for coverage at the online marketplace, where you can explore different types of coverage, with coverage options and payment plans to meet your budget. The coverage is income-based, so your plan will be determined based on your financial circumstances, income, and living situation. Health benefits can be complex and confusing, but the marketplace has live representatives that can assist you with finding the right plan to meet your needs.

You mentioned you are a student, and this is great, because you should also have coverage through your college Student Health Services department, even if you are a part-time student. Their office can assist you with referrals in your area or set you up with a therapist on staff at the college. We offer affordable payment options at BetterHelp, even if you don't have insurance coverage, and I recommend you complete an online application to explore your costs and coverages. Perhaps you might also consider starting therapy with shorter sessions (30 minutes instead of 45 minutes), or, schedule bi-weekly sessions instead of weekly sessions. These efforts are more cost-effective ways to start therapy while staying mindful of your budget.

It's my pleasure to assist you. I hope you find the support you need in a practical and cost-effective way.

Yours in good health,
Heather
