Why marriage is overrated?

Marriage is such a beautiful experience that human beings can experience.  However, with divorce rates so high, one can’t help but wonder if marriage is actually overrated and not what it is hyped up to be.  There are so many confusing messages out there about what marriage is really like.  Hollywood has glamorized the idea of marriage for years, and that gives people some mixed-up messages.  From a very early age, society gives us messages to make us think that marriage will be the most magical thing we ever experience. When an adult continues to hold on to those messages, they will have difficulty facing the difficult realities of marriage.  It is possible that in the first difficult time in their marriage, they might think of divorce because it is not the magic it was supposed to be. 

The reality is that marriage is beautiful but comes with a lot of work and pain.  There are certainly beautiful moments in marriage, but there are also some really difficult moments.  When you are married, your marriage becomes one of the most important relationships in your life.  So, when there are difficulties in your marriage, it is truly gut-wrenching and incredibly difficult to get through.  Having a balance of healthy outlets in your life can help you get through the difficult times, but the difficult moments are very hard to get through at the end of the day.  It is important to remember this as you go into marriage so that you can have realistic expectations.

Sometimes people struggle with thinking that getting married will fix so many problems in their lives. This can be really dangerous thinking and set someone up for dependency on their marriage and spouse.  It is also important to note that when married, you will miss certain things from before.  For example, it is common to miss certain parts of being single that you no longer experience marriage.  It is important to recognize these things as natural as they happen rather than meaning that your marriage is not working.
