I was wondering if I could somehow get free or a discount counseling? It’s very expensive and due to COVID I lost my job and have been working at a under the table job.

I keep getting emails asking why I haven’t replied to my counselor and the reason is because it’s way too much for me to pay $200 upfront. I would love to reply if I could afford that.

Good day to you Daisyflower and thank you for submitting your question regarding available resources that could provide financial assistance to you, to afford ongoing and consistent counseling through Betterhelp. I know that while we are in the midst of the covid 19 pandemic, that many people, like yourself are struggling financially and are prioritizing the most basic needs to see themselves and their families through this pandemic. Although basic needs may not necessarily include immediate mental health services and support v. that of food, clothing and shelter, it is essential that each individual find ways to practice self care and seek out whatever services that may be of benefit to them in processing ongoing stressors and feelings. As a Therapist for Betterhelp, what I can provide you at this time is some questions and/or some insights into options that you may want to explore to determine what help may be available to you at this time. First, according to my understanding, the billing department through Betterhelp might be able to assist you. Have you had the opportunity to speak to someone in the billing department through Betterhelp? If not, I would highly encourage you to do so as they may be able to assist. As well, I am not aware of where you live but in many communities throughout the country, there are community resources that may help provide additional financial resources for you, especially in the midst of covid. I would explore what agencies are within your community and inquire about what kind of financial assistance you may be eligible to receive. If you are eligible and able to receive some financial benefit or stipend through a community agency, perhaps a portion of this assistance could be allocated to assist you with the fees required for Betterhelp services. I hope the two options that I have shared with you will be of benefit to you and as always I remain available to provide you ongoing support, feedback and validation of what you must be going through at this time. I wish you all of the best in your endeavors. Best Regards, Cynthia Herndon, LCSW.
