What causes me to have wild mood swings and be upset all the time? It’s pretty bad.

I get upset about everything, even the small things. My moods are always changing so fast and I am always so irrational. It’s gotten to the point I can’t stand myself and get on my own nerves!

Kitty,

I am so glad you were vulnerable enough to reach out for guidance by asking your question. I hate to hear that you are struggling with mood swings. That definitely sounds frustrating!

To start off, I would start tracking your moods/emotions daily so that you can see any patterns and see if there are any triggers to what is causing your moods to change so fast. When tracking right down the time, what you were doing before and how you are feeling. This will be helpful if you choose to engage in counselor or even if you were to choose to see a psychiatrist and/or doctor as well.

Counseling absolutely would be helpful as well to help you express yourself and have a professional to help you better with emotional regulation techniques.

We all have something called a window of tolerance in which we can handle different stressors in our life. This is also something you could start to look at as well. Typically when we wake up in the morning we are within our window of tolerance. For example, you wake up in the morning and you get into the shower and there's no hot water left. This could be a stressor which could overflow your window of tolerance so to speak and you can already be dissed regulated right off the bat in the morning. Or there are some people that are more go with the flow type of people and they have more room in their window tolerance and they're able to just take a quick cold shower and not let it affect them. Then on their way to work there is traffic again somebody with a smaller window of tolerance is already so mad at this point and screaming and all sorts of stuff. The person that has more room in their window of tolerance is able to be more flexible and not get been out of shape for the stressors that happen that are not in our control. So think about that in terms of your moods. It sounds like your window is pretty small so even the smallest stressors are causing big reactions. Are there things that you could do to help with that? Do you do activities to help you with your stress management? Try to take some time for yourself to unwind and to relax.

I wish you the best of luck and again I'm so glad you reached out.
