What type of therapy is best for chronic pain?
In my clinical experience CBT can help, but also Mindfulness based Stress Reduction Therapy has shown in the research that it can be very effective with easing physical pain symptoms. CBT can also help, work on changing the way you think, and making you become more self aware of you thoughts, physical body and overall more presence. We spend a lot of times hyper focused on things we can not change, and focused on the past or the future, and the brain naturally tries to escapes the feeling of pain. I have struggled with physical pain from Endo and Fibroids and have found MBSR to be very helpful for me as I dealt with the pain. It did not completely cure my pain, though some have claimed that it did for them, but it helps me with managing the pain. MBSR can help by teaching you how to use Mindfulness, which is a practice of becoming non-judgmentally self aware, and fully presence in the moment. Learning specific practices that you can use daily to help you become more mindful, I think therapy all around can help with managing and coping with the physical symptoms as well as mental and emotional symptoms of pain, and can yield lasting results. Also it can help learning how manage relationships, and process through your frustration. In my clinical opinion our relationships are heavily affected by our physical state of being. If we are in pain, and the people around us do not understand our pain it will lead to us feeling alone and disconnected from the people around us. So we have to be really mindful of the people around us, and understand that they do not have the same experience as we do, so we have to work on having more empathy for them. Also I think if is very important for people to learn how to not use the people around to release your pain and frustration. The people around you when you are in pain or suffering often become the punching bag and you have to learn to not use them as punching bags, but use them as comforters. This all happens with learning to change your thinking.
