Why am I so unfocused and unorganized?
I think a lot of us feel this way. Most entrepreneurs and highly successful people actually feel this way often. Wondering and curiosity in a lot of things may actually be your superpower. The difference is when it gets in your way. Many times this happens when you have too much on your plate and perhaps you overcommit yourself.
To understand our brain type, I recommend the work of Dr. Daniel Amen and work with clients on understanding your brain type. You can take the brain health assessment here: https://brainhealthassessment.com/assessment It complements the book, You, Happier where you can work through your discovery of how your brain works and what supplements and foods may help you focus and harness this brain energy. It can be life changing to understand how your brain works.
Creating the follow through is the next step. I work with my clients on building sustainable habits. Atomic Habits by James Clear is a book I recommend. Simple, small and consistent changes done daily, help your decisions about what is a priority each day and your follow through.
Just remember that you will never been motivated to finish if it just isn't your skill set or inclination BUT you can build the discipline to show up and prioritize and finish what you need to finish. The Working Genius is a great assessment to dive into your genius, your competency and your points of frustration. Patrick Lencioni has a couple of great podcasts that can help as well - At the Table and the Working Genius.
As a therapist, we connect you to resources that you may not be familiar with. There are many things in our life that make sense when we can be connected to a framework to help us. In the meantime, help your brain to digest these new ideas by doing the following each day.
- A minimum of 30 minutes of intentional exercise a day. Start your day with the non-negotiable to move. Blood flow to the brain is important for functioning. There are plenty of no cost options on YouTube. Walking outside is amazing
- Meditation at least once a day. Your brain is in hyper mode so you must practice calmness. The app UnPlug is a no cost app that I recommend that has guided programs of all lengths. Some are even more active meditation until restful meditation works for you.
- Hydration. Drink at least half of your body weight in water a day. So if you weigh 130 pounds, you want to drink at least 65 ounces of water a day. Hydration helps the brain and your entire body function properly. Removing caffeine and alcohol is a must when lessening anxiety.
- Nutrition. Reducing anxieties can be accelerated with a proper diet. Fruits and Veggies first. Limit carbs that come from sugars and white flour. It is nature’s best gift to us. Allowing yourself the luxury of eating slow and smelling the aromas is so stimulating for the brain and can immediately calm the flight or fight response.
