About me

I have a master’s degree in counseling from Alabama State University and 15 years of counseling experience. To bolster my counseling skills, I got licensed as a Professional Counselor in Georgia and certified in Anger Management Treatment, Clinical Trauma, Professional Counselor Supervision, School Counseling (Georgia, K-12), and Telemental Health. Continuing education is a must so that I stay well-informed and practice counseling professionally, proficiently, and ethically.

My life and professional experiences allowed me to build relationships with people from various backgrounds. I served over four years in the U.S. Army, honorably discharged, and then started working as a counselor for the Department of Juvenile Justice in Georgia. After six and a half years with the Department of Juvenile Justice, I have worked as a school counselor and started a counseling practice.

I was born to be a counselor. I love listening and helping others to use their unique strength(s) or gift(s) to face life challenges and live productive lives. Active listening, unconditional positive regard, empathy, and genuineness are essentials in my work with clients. My preferred therapeutic approach is person/client-centered therapy. My goals are to place myself into the individuals’ world, be nonjudgmental, ethical, build rapport and create positive therapeutic relationships. I want my clients to feel comfortable, accepted, open, and free to talk about any experience without reservation. I believe in self-disclosure to humanize the counseling experiences and share common life events for client growth. We are in this together.

Reviews

These quotes represent just a few of the many positive reviews that we have received for Dorian Ellis. We don't pay anyone to provide their review and they are all made voluntarily. Some people's experience receiving therapy with BetterHelp might be different.

Personally, I’ve struggled most with my self worth and allowing myself to be vulnerable.

Dorian has been a game changer in helping me work through this. In particular:

- he does a great job of creating a a warm and safe space to have these vulnerable conversations that I never was comfortable having before

- he has helped shift my thinking from focusing on the quality of “the outputs” to focusing on the quality of “the inputs” of my efforts when evaluating my own self worth

- he provides just the right amount of encouragement for me to continue to seek out opportunities to challenge my comfort zone in my areas of growth rather than settling for my initial progress.

- he’s always down to make NBA and basketball analogies with me which is also helpful :)

Dorian is a fantastic therapist. I have been able to communicate with Dorian about issues I have never been comfortable talking with others about. Dorian listens to what you are saying and at the same time challenges you to think in a different way that betters your understanding of yourself. I appreciate Dorian for what he has done for me.

Dorian has helped me immensely. He never confuses me with his other patients (I've had that happen with a previous betterhelp therapist), and I feel like we really have good breakthroughs with each session. There's always something I learn about myself! He's an important tool in my mental health journey, and I hope he stays my therapist for a long time!
