About me

Greetings! First, I want to commend you for taking this major step. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia with 13 years of professional work experience in mental health/human services. It is my belief that we all have experiences in life that can cause us to feel angry, nervous, ashamed, hurt, disappointed, confused, unbalanced, or confused just to name a few emotions. Through my years of experience working, I have learned that experiences left unresolved have the potential for a negative impact on how a person views themselves, their life, and their support. My mission as a counselor is to “help others journey to a space of peace,” by providing a space/environment where you can explore and process the necessary topics.

I specialize in helping clients who experience trauma, anxiety, depression, and abuse. Additionally, stress, lack of motivation, low self-esteem/confidence, & relationship issues are also areas of focus in which I also have experience. I work with my clients to create an open and safe environment where thoughts and feelings can be shared without fear of judgment. I utilize an integrated approach which includes CBT, Trauma Informed Care, Motivational Interviewing (MI), DBT skills, EMDR, and Person-Centered approaches to help my clients process their feelings/emotions in a healthy manner. I hope, that our experience will help you create new ways to cope with stressors/triggers.

I provide individual and group counseling services for individuals ages 12 years old and up. So, if you are struggling with depression, anger management, relationship problems, anxiety, trauma, or life changes and I would love to help you work through this season of your life. Taking the first step and signing up for therapy takes courage, and I look forward to helping you on this journey!

Dr Garrett has been great to work with. She listens very well and provides perspective on things happening in my life. She’s really good at meeting me where I was and adjusting to provide the format that worked best for me. I would highly recommend her.

Dr. Garrett is great at listening as well as prompting new thought patterns and perspectives. She doesn't tell me what I may want to hear and instead stretches me to look at the reality of certain situations and explore where my reactions are truly stemming from. She has given good advice and encourages me to work past the immediate symptom. I greatly appreciate the sessions I have had with her so far.

Oh, she’s absolutely amazing. Her personality is one of a kind. I like that I could open up to her and it’s not like a therapy it’s more of just talking to someone it’s more personal definitely one of the best therapists I’ve encountered in a long time, and I look forward to working with her. And I definitely appreciate the fact that she makes me feel justified in the emotions. I feel inside of like a crazy person which I appreciate. Also the fact that she specialize in trauma definitely helps, at least in my case. 10 out of 10 would definitely recommend.

I love her energy! She really listens and understand me a lot. We have only had a few sessions, but I have been able to trust her. She is amazing!

I immediately connected with Dr. Janay. She is a great listener. She picks up on subtle clues to my struggles, offering awareness to what I may have overlooked. I enjoy the exercises she leaves me with for the days between sessions, finding them helpful and insightful. I also get the sense that she has had her own struggles and has done the work on herself to allow you to do the work on yourself. I’m so glad BetterHelp matched me with her.
