About me

First, Hello-Hi, Welcome- I am so glad you are here!
Good listener, understanding, non- judgmental are all qualities I embody to ensure everyone I work with does not feel judged- but understood and heard and I know you will find that here. I strive to make things as comfortable as possible and to go at your pace- after all, this is all for you. Therapy can be...well pretty awkward and uncomfortable at times- lets work together and push through that!
I am a born and raised “ Yooper” here in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and other than a few years spent away for Graduate school I have lived in the U.P.
I earned my Bachelors in Social work from Northern Michigan University and my Masters in Social Work from Grand Valley State University. While in school I worked as a care aid serving adults who suffered with mental illness, a waitress and in customer services at retail stores. For my final internship in Graduate school I spent a year working as an intern in an Emergency Department in a low-income neighborhood that also served as the surrounding areas Trauma center. While there I primarily worked with individuals who struggled with mental illness, addiction, nursing home placements and often traumas (car accidents, gun and gang violence). For the past 10 years I have worked as a Qualified Mental Health Professional working for the Department of Corrections- while most of my time is spent working with individuals who suffer from mental illness and adjustment issues/concerns a majority of my experience is facilitating groups for individuals who committed sexual offenses. I take great pride in being able to be objective even in the most heinous of times while building rapport with my clients while working together towards a common goal- a better life.
My main background is working from the Cognitive Behavioral Model which works on changing the way ones thinks about a situation and in return changing the thoughts and feelings as well. I am a firm believer that thoughts lead to feelings lead to behavior and if as individuals we can change our initial thoughts, our feelings and behavior that follows will ultimately change as well- for the better that is.

If you are looking for help and want to find someone who will meet you where you are, make you feel comfortable- I am ready to work with you!

We are all busy, right? I offer messaging/live chats only, which creates a 'as needed' approach, where you can message me when you want and not feel pressured to have 'something' to talk about once a week. With Live chats, they are in real time where we message back and forth in a chat room and we can really get into some issues/concerns without the pressure of sitting down and talking to your phone/computer. I find these two methods very beneficial and saves on your valuable time since both can be done from anywhere!

Reviews

These quotes represent just a few of the many positive reviews that we have received for Jessica Cheney. We don't pay anyone to provide their review and they are all made voluntarily. Some people's experience receiving therapy with BetterHelp might be different.

I have found this program to be absolutely amazing for my progress personally after a very difficult 6 months last year. Jessica has been super helpful in hearing me out. She doesn't say a lot, but is very to the point; in a great way for me personally. I have found my close personal relationships to be helpful, but there is always at least some bias. This is my first time in any sort of therapy, and I have found Jessica to be unbiased but also provides helpful ideas or other ways to think about something. Thank you.

Jessica is fantastic at making you feel comfortable and open to share without being judged. She provides appropriate feedback and asks spot on questions which shows she is listening to you and all that you're saying and what you're not. She helps you address things you weren't even aware of without being pushy and allows you to explore things in your time. My experience working with Jessica to date has been more than helpful and I am grateful beyond words!

Jessica is really understanding and supportive person. I feel safe and accepted while talking with her, and that means a lot for me. After every session I feel so much better and I’m really grateful for that

Jessica 'got me' from the outset regarding my issue and frankly she has helped me to date. She is there when and if I need her and I can't be more thankful.
