Joseph Setchel, LCMHC, LMHC
About me
I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with over 20 years of experience in the mental health field. I began my journey into the helping professions in 1995 at Stetson University. In 1999 I graduated from that institution with a Bachelors degree in Psychology and a minor in Music. After a brief hiatus to "catch my breath", I returned to school at the University of Central Florida. I completed my studies at UCF in 2002, graduating with a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology. Following a 2 year post-Masters internship and a wealth of real world experience I was awarded my license in Mental Health Counseling in 2007.
My approach to therapy varies from person to person. Some may benefit from a Cognitive Behavioral perspective to tackle negative thoughts and emotions while others may benefit from a more Existential approach. My focus is always on the needs and wants of the individual seeking help. Regardless of the method we employ, I also view therapy as a process that should be productive. A person receiving counseling should be able to see increased insight, more effective coping strategies, clarity, better decision-making skills or a combination of these. The counseling I provide is typically a combination of multiple modalities, including Solution Focused Therapy. The core values that drive my philosophy with regard to therapy are choice, authenticity, honesty, cultural awareness and positive regard.

I haven’t got to know him to well but from the experiences I have had with him, he seems like a great guy and I feel lucky I got a good therapist.

Joseph is one of the most effective therapists I’ve worked with. We’ve only had live messaging sessions and I still feel more heard and have gained more tools than in any previous therapy experience. He is insightful, down to earth, and non judgmental. He uses humor in ways that make me feel more comfortable. Joseph is skilled at taking what feels like a huge and complex issue and distilling it down to the root of the problem that needs to be addressed. I’m very grateful for his support.

Joseph is a very capable therapist and overall a really great guy. He always makes sure to ask how're you feeling a d helps you analyze both your day to day emotions as well as your overall mood. Joseph clearly has a lot of experience in the field, sends very helpful concepts and technique to help deal with a variety of issues ranging from stress to anxiety to depression and so on. He's never condescending or makes. You feel judged or insecure about yourself which always a huge plus. Talking to Joseph feels like how talking to a therapist should feel like, just an unjudging ear to listen to your issues and offer healthy ways to understand them or deal with them. I feel like I lucked out with him and he's a great choice for anyone dealing with anxiety or stress or just feeling like life is a bit too much sometimes.
