Michael Harland, BACP
About me
I am licensed in the UK with 5 years of professional work experience. My education and experience has brought me to a unique perspective on the function of anxiety and depression in the individual, as part of a larger group. This perspective, has helped many clients whose anxiety and depression was previously resistant to treatment.
Of course there is no "one size fits all". Everyone is unique, and I have found that keeping an open mind is essential to understand people from a multitude of perspectives and I strive to bring this to my work as a counsellor. I will tailor our dialog and treatment plan to meet your unique and specific needs.
I look forward to working together.

My journey with Michael has been very insightful. This is the first time I am experiencing speaking to a therapist and it’s been very helpful so far and I believe will only get better. I looking forward to the journey.

I've been using Michael for a few months and he has brought me out of a period of confusion. He offered great advice and instead of rushing things, he helped me by giving me baby steps, improving myself one week at a time.
Keep up the good work Michael!

To make this review stand out a little more, I’d like to first mention that few people in the medical or counselling fields have impressed me with their knowledge or application in the past, if anything, some have left me a little disappointed with a seemingly common and rather noticeable lack of passion or true interest in the field, - which is quite easy to see when you’ve had an interest in the field yourself. In the past, I often felt like I knew more about the field than my previous counsellors did in some areas, or maybe they were not making full use of their expertise because the passion just wasn’t there. This is a general comment on my experience with counselling, and does not reflect on other therapists on BetterHelp. Rather, this is a compliment to BetterHelp in that they’re definitely doing something right in their selection process, which prompted me to put the effort into write this review in such depth.
Michael is different, he has restored my hope not just through counselling, but a true passion for his work that’s been highly evident in every session I’ve attended. Our conversations have been a breath of fresh air, - he is exceptionally well-read, experienced, and passionate. He loves his job, and it shows.
Michael employs a combination of techniques tailored to the individual, he is the first therapist whom I haven’t been able to predict almost every step of the way, - I’m interested in the field myself, have read many books, many articles and studies on the subject, and found that some therapists are too ‘by the book’ or too fixated on their technique/theory of choice, and sometimes apply fundamental concepts that many people with mental health struggles (especially those like me, who tend to rationalise and intellectualise their emotions) are likely already well aware of, and explored time and time again with no success in their own time.
Michael’s ability to connect with and understand my thought patterns has been exceptional, and his knowledge of the field deeper and more varied than any other therapists I’ve had the pleasure of dealing with.
If you’re someone who thinks you already ‘know it all’ and that no one can help you, this is the therapist for you, - he may just prove you wrong, and could very well give you a significant shift in perspective and change your mindset for good.
Some therapy styles I’ve tried with other therapists simply didn’t click with me, but Michael is the first to apply a combination of techniques, tailored to me. His approach is akin to (an ethical version of) the fictional character ‘Dr. House’, - he pays attention to every detail, and his approach is based on your specific case and all its nuances.
Michael remembers virtually everything we’ve ever discussed, I don’t feel like I need to reiterate anything in our sessions, which is very reassuring and shows that he is indeed giving me his full attention, and these sessions have been key in helping me tackle a variety of problems I was experiencing, and in learning to understand myself at a much deeper level.
Michael is the reason I’ve decided to stick to therapy long term, and he has renewed my interest in the field of psychology as well, for which I’m also quite grateful. My goal initially was to force myself to do at least 10 weeks. Now however, I’d gladly pay for the service another year even if I didn’t have a need for it, just to keep Michael ‘on retainer’ of sorts, until there comes a day that I once again do.
Top-notch therapist on a top-notch platform, I recommend both without a shadow of doubt.
