Monica Herwald, LICSW
About me
Welcome! I'm a clinical social worker with over 15 years of experience helping individuals and families find greater happiness and life satisfaction. I've worked with teens and adults of all ages deal successfully with major life transitions, manage chronic health conditions, heal from grief and loss, and find relief from depression, anxiety, and adjustment problems.
One of my specialties is in bereavement counseling, and I have several years of experience leading support groups for grieving parents, spouses/partners, and adult children. In addition to office-based therapy, I've provided counseling in the home environment, in hospitals, and through web-based platforms.
It is my deep belief that we all have the potential within to achieve satisfaction and happiness in life. My role is to help you identify the strengths and resources you need to resolve the obstacles keeping you from experiencing the happiness you desire. Since my philosophy is based in positive psychology, I believe you bring with you many of the strengths you need to achieve greater happiness, and I see my role as helping you to unlock those strengths that already exist. My counseling style is warm and compassionate, and I have great respect for the courage it takes to make changes. In addition to being an active and empathic listener, I offer practical and proven tools to help keep you moving in a positive direction toward your goals. I draw upon a range of professional strategies including cognitive-behavioral and dialectical behavioral therapies, insight orientation, and mindfulness. I take a creative approach, tailoring my interventions to your unique needs and life experiences.
I believe that the best results are accomplished when we approach our work together as collaborators, and you will find my approach to be genuine and respectful. That said, I also find a touch of humor can sometimes bring a refreshing change of perspective along the journey. I look forward to partnering with you in your search for greater fulfillment.

Monica is supportive, empathetic, humorous and thoughtful in our interactions and provides a valuable safe space to explore my emotional and psychological challenges. She is extremely good at listening at length and then asking the right question to help me reframe and reexamine the problem at hand. I have made great progress in working with her and implemented new routines and frameworks for addressing emotional, social and psychological challenges - significantly improving my day-to-day life and increasing the balance in my relationships. She is wonderful.

I've appreciated working with Monica. She's provided me with a listening ear and good feedback to help me help myself. Prior to therapy, I leaned heavily into my friends as listening ears and supports. Now, when I find myself going to them to talk through something, I'll pause and say I'll save it for therapy with Monica or send it in a message to her instead. The messaging platform serves as a nice interim pressure release between sessions and I appreciate Monica's thoughtfulness in response.
