Let me introduce myself, my name is Richard Orona and I can help you obtain the changes you are looking to make. My years of experience have allowed me to develop a personal appreciation for focusing on what is important in life. For me, that is nurturing my family and passing on the appreciation that allows my four children to find out what is important in their lives, to work towards their goals, and above all to enjoy the journey!
I have worked in various counseling agencies and in private practice. I have been able to see success in my counseling practice with individuals, families and couples. (Please read the reviews of clients that I have worked with here on this site). I have always enjoyed the process of counseling and the opportunity to help people enhance their lives. I am committed to providing proven and research based counseling services for a wide range of concerns and problems. I have successfully helped people cope with depression, stress and anxiety, relationship issues and methods to improve self-esteem. My approach incorporates assessing the concern and locating practical strategies to resolve the issue. I am focused on helping the client adopt skills for self-development and maintaining success. I have earned a Master's of Art in Marriage and Family Therapy and a Master's of Science in Psychology with a specialty in Behavioral Medicine.
The approach that I use is a combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Brief Solution Focused Therapy. It is important to A) focus on finding solutions to the concerns that are confronting the client and B) helping the person locate and change the thought processes guiding the problematic behavior. If the thought processes are altered then the new behavior is not far behind. I strive to help clients locate the change they are seeking. I believe counseling is an effective method to learn new behaviors, new thought processes, and new ways to be successful in personal and professional settings.
I look forward to working with you locate the solutions you are seeking.

Richard is amazing. He really knows how to get to the core of things and build (or rebuild) from the ground up. He has a great approach to everything and has such kind way of putting things into perspective. He has been a huge help to me. I'm grateful for him and look forward to continuing working with him!

The ongoing session goes pretty well so far. I appreciate that he provided a lot of knowledge about mental health and useful advice for my questions before we can go further with my situation. I feel comfortable with the conversation and empowered in someway. He is patient and well organized. I type a lot of things via message session and he is solid and on point with the discussion. That really enhances my confidence on my journey of dealing with my on going issues. I’m pretty surprised and feel lucky for trying this so far. I’m looking forward for the coming sessions.

Richard has been great so far. I've only been using the messaging service, not video or audio and that suits me perfectly. He's asked some really great questions and given me a lot to think about very early on.

Richard is the best. I felt that he was able to help me from the very first session I had with him. He is so smart, with a great sense of humour, friendly and he approaches every problem I meet the right way. We have a super dynamic and I always feel relief after talking with him. I love his questions and the fact that he is always " to the point". Thank you so much Richard Orona for being who you are with me. ☺️

Richard is fantastic and has taught me so much about how to manage the issues that cause me stress. He is super easy to talk to and seems to focus on all the things that are a priority for me. He uses great analogies to help me understand how to feel better.

I have worked with Richard for several months now, and he helped me get through the most difficult time of my life! I have a chronic, incurable illness and I have been struggling to deal with anxiety, depression, pain and fear. Richard helped me find tools to deal with my emotions. He always listens and he always seems to understand where my fear is coming from. His calm, friendly, caring and encouraging voice helped me fight the anxiety during the worst time of my life. And now after I’ve had a transplant, he helps me to deal with all the new challenges I am facing.
Working with Richard was one of the best choices I have ever made! I am so happy that I have the opportunity to work with him through online counseling. Since I am ill, office visits with a therapist would just not be possible.
I highly recommend Richard to everyone needing a counselor!

This was my first time working with a therapist and the online messaging system for communicating with the therapist. It took a few tries finding a therapist right for me because I was moving around a lot for rotations and I was unsure as to what kind of help I was looking for exactly. I'm a medical student and I gave betterhelp a try because I felt so isolated, frustrated, and helpless at my situation. Being constantly surrounded by harsh criticism in my medical training environment I initially sought out a therapist who would validate my feelings--someone to say that such a unhealthy culture shouldn't exist in a medical program that teaches about healing and compassion. In addition to feeling disappointed at the current training environment I had chosen because it wasn't meeting up to my ideals, I was also feeling unworthy, broken, and alone secondary to my failed test scores. My anxiety, the chronic negative self-talk, the helpless feeling of my situation that I didn't know how to fix all weighed on me daily. Richard helped me in so many ways:
- to stop viewing my test scores as self-worth
- to consciously change my bad habit of negative self-talk
- to reframe stressful situations (testing environments with high stakes, meetings with authoritative figures who want to intimidate, etc.) in my mind that's conducive to my well-being
- to have awareness of emotions and thoughts that was harmful or helpful to my well-being
- to regain a sense of control in my life and in my emotional and mental health
I'm grateful that I was able to find someone like Richard. He was patient with me even when I was resistant to change, and he stood in my corner as an ally during a time where I felt completely isolated and abandoned by professors and authoritative figures I trusted. He helped shed the light on how to navigate through my situation so that I could regain my self-confidence and take an active role in affecting my behavior for the better. I'm truly grateful for Richard's positive influence and guidance that helped mold me into a better version of myself today so that going forward I can be a better provider for those who may need my help some day.

So far, he is very engaging and very respondent to my questions. He's very astute and gives his opinion and advice in the most simplistic way. I feel like I'm talking with a good friend and not someone who is just doing a job. I like the fact that he gives me alternatives to think about in certain situations. I want to continue with him.
