About me

My name is Shannon Hilliker and I am clinical social worker based in Brooklyn, NY. I earned my social work masters from CUNY Hunter College after having earned my bachelors from CUNY Brooklyn College in Political Science, double minoring in African Studies and Women’s Studies. With a professional background based in social justice, I came to realize that the best way to be of service to others, is to assist in their healing process, or overall support, so that they can develop the tools necessary to help themselves get out of their own way, and, ultimately, move into a space of living their absolute best life according to their own goals and standards.

I have spent the last 10 years working, primarily with justice-involved and incarcerated individuals throughout all the stages of their incarceration and re-entry, but also with college students, high school students (including adults returning to complete their diplomas), youth impacted by the foster care system, and a wide array of individuals during their various stages life. I've worked in many different settings with individuals and families who have a variety of personal challenges such as depression, anxiety, life transitions, stress, family problems, trauma, effective communication, achieving goals, and more. My approach is varied as each person is unique, but I tend to use a combination of Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Mindfulness. I have a laid back and supportive style. You can expect me to walk with you through whatever difficulties you are facing and help you learn more about yourself and the way you interact with the world. I believe in treating everyone with respect, dignity, and compassion, and I don't believe in using labels and language that imply stigma or judgement. My goal is to create a safe space where you can be open and honest about your needs and next steps.

I’m looking forward to connecting with you!

I’ve been working with Shannon for almost two years now, and she’s been a huge help. Issues include marital separation, health crises, and parenting. Very supportive, but asks the right questions when she needs to.

Shannon is honestly the best. I have only had terrible experiences with therapists until now. I honestly could never thank her enough for her positive impact on my mental health. She is an absolute gem.

Shannon is the best therapist I’ve ever had which is strange to say as we are geographically no where near each other. She offers different perspectives and challenges me to look at things differently. She praises me when I don’t realize progress I’ve made which has helped me continue pursuing those more constructive ways of dealing with very challenging situations and I find myself doing better and better dealing with hard moments or days. Talking out my life to her makes me realize more about myself and others around me and I feel better equipped to face life’s daily challenges. I look forward to talking to her every week and even though I have a limited schedule we manage to make it work every week and I’m so thankful for that and that somehow I ended up with her.

Shannon is a great listener and offers thoughtful insight during our conversations. She’s really easy to talk to and doesn’t take herself or the process too seriously which I really appreciate- it makes it easy to open up to her and get into a flow.

Shannon is amazing! I’ve even shared some of the advice she’s given me with my friends and their reactions were that she’s sooo good. Honestly would recommend to anyone
