Sheri Truax, LCSW
About me
I believe that it takes strength and courage to ask for help when we are vulnerable. Sharing your challenges is not an easy task and can feel very unsettling. My goal is to support you in your journey with compassion, respect and kindness. I have had many times in my life when I have needed that supportive listener to help me process and reflect on what choices are in front of me. I want you to have an experience that is productive, fruitful and leaves you feeling better about yourself and your life. I want your to feel powerFULL, not powerless, in your life. And I work in ways that I think help people do just that.
My primary modality is Cognitive Behavior Therapy which helps us to see how our thoughts impact our actions and how we can shift this. In my own life I use mindfulness techniques to help me cope with life’s stressors and I try to share those methods with others so that they may benefit from this well researched way of remaining calm and centered. Focusing on the solutions is another way that I try to support a forward-thinking approach in therapy. I am strengths based and feminist in my approach with clients as well. That is to say that I recognize the good that people possess but also recognize the reality of things in the world around us, especially the disparities for women.
The areas that I have the most effectiveness include anxiety, challenges of parenting, self-esteem issues, women's issues. communication in relationships, family dynamic challenges, military life challenges and more. I have a BA in Psychology from Boston College and an Masters Degree in Social Work from University of Southern Maine. I am licensed as a Clinical Social Worker in the State of Virginia. I am married with 2 kids and 2 dogs. I look forward to helping you find the opportunity that often comes when we are faced with difficult times in our life.
