Tara Porphy, LPC
About me
Hi! I'm Tara. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of New Jersey. I have been working in the mental health industry for ten years. Most of my experience is working with clients in their homes, which often can be a place of comfort. I am used to non-traditional therapy such as meeting clients at home, school, or wherever they are most comfortable. Meeting with clients via teletherapy has been one more method that I have adapted to.
I have experience in a variety of different settings. I also have worked in a residential program for substance abuse and addiction. During my time at the residential program, I led groups and conducted individual/family-based counseling for our residents. I was also responsible for supporting the family members of our residents. I have experience working with motivational interviewing, psychoeducation, and working with individuals in recovery as well as their family members. I believe addiction is a family disease and am comfortable working with all whom are affected.
A majority of my background is working with children, teens, and their families. However, there have been many moments where I work with parents individually or with the family unit as a whole. While some of my specializations including working with children, I am able to work with parents to help better support their children. Together, we can work to create a rewards/consequence based system or other areas that you may be struggling with. My approach is very flexible and adaptable based on the needs of my clients.
Some of my specializations are intellectual/developmental disabilities (including individuals with autism), depression, anxiety, trauma, and self-harm. I also have experience working with substance abuse/addiction/and working with the family unit. However, I am not limited to these areas.
I use an eclectic approach when working with my clients. I use a variety of different approaches including but not limited to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Person-Centered.

Tara is incredible! She has been so patient, insightful and kind. She makes sure you are comfortable, suggests strategies that will work best for you personally and always checks in to make sure things are going well. She has also been very accomodating in terms of scheduling, and easy to reach out to in between sessions. I would highly recommend her.
