I believe that when it comes to being depressed, anxious/fearful, or if you are having real problems in your relationship, you want relief and you want it as soon as you can get it. People don't seek a counselor to talk, they go to find a way to feel better, be better and never need you again as soon as possible. That's why I use the methods and principles normally associated with Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), or Brief Therapy. My training was first as a scientist and science educator. Dealing with people from all walks of life, I came to realize we are far more alike than we are different and that we are all susceptible to being depressed, anxious and having relationship difficulties. I trained in hypnosis to help with obsessive thinking and behavior change (like smoking, overeating, social and other anxieties, etc.), and to become a psychological counselor through the UNC-G graduate studies program. In all that time (beginning to help others in 1989) I came to find that the fastest way to get your life back is to employ the principles and strategies studied and described as CBT. Whatever you call it (several names can be applies), taking a more practical, here-and-now approach with understanding what your problems are and creating a plan of action to make them better is the most direct and most successful way to make things better. It places the power of control and to heal right in the hand of the individual, not a therapist, not a drug...you. We all know that it isn't always easy. And being realistic means we acknowledge that sometimes it can be mighty tough. The wonderful part of it is that with the right therapist, this approach is tested and proven, and gives you a real reason to hope and be encouraged that, while it might take some time, you can get better. After years of practice, the passion to help others translated in my authorship of nearly two dozen training courses in subjects like gaining emotional control, resolving conflicts, dealing with people that are very hard to deal with, leadership, management, and others. I also authored Ready Access CBT for Working Professionals (Lorman Education) to share what I know with other therapists, and a book to bring these principles to the public titled, Naked Thinking. I focus my help for those who are suffering with depression and anxiety problems (which can include transitional issues like loss of a job, a relationship, speaking up for yourself, speaking to groups or just your boss, etc.) and relationship problems (which can include marital and couples problems, family issues, work and co-worker issues, etc.)

I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in North Carolina. I have worked within the mental health field since 1998. I received a Master of Science in Counseling and Psychology from the University of West Alabama in 2008 and I have been working as a counselor for 9 years. I have experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and families experiencing depression, anxiety, PTSD, trauma, autism, relationship issues, bipolar disorder, suicidal ideation, panic disorder, parent-child relationship issues. I view counseling as a forum for acceptance and understanding that serves to facilitate and foster change. To some, counseling is a means to a positive end, which may be as simple as using the counselor as a sounding board or a way around a roadblock in life. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the basic theoretical foundation of my work. CBT emphasizes the idea that a person will experience difficulties in life, based on perceptions of the events that have occurred. I tailor my sessions based on the needs of my client(s), utilizing a collaborative approach from different models. I thank you for considering me to support you with reaching your goals. I look forward to working with you.

But I found that life experience paired with my own belief system, allowed me the opportunity to view life's challenges through a unique lens. Throughout my career I have held different positions in mental health. I started at the bottom, and through my education worked my way up, and, because of that I have been able to experience different perspectives while working with this population. I have experience working in addictions residential treatment, Intensive Outpatient Programs, facilitating support groups, teaching life skills, as well as speaking engagements, Through a Christian approach I have worked with many individuals struggling with low self-esteem, purpose, guilt and shame, and a variety of other life's obstacles and helping clients resolve them. I believe in using a collaborative approach in helping my clients. In addition to my Christian counseling experiences, I also use a multitude of other evidence-based practices, including, but not limited to, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, and Motivational Therapy. Someone much wiser than myself once said that while we all experience pain at various times in our lives, it’s how we choose to respond to the pain that can define who we are. Do we continue to suffer, or do we take that pain, acknowledge that it’s part of who we are, and forge ahead to build something greater? Obviously, you know life isn’t a walk through the park - someone else said that too - or you wouldn’t be looking for a therapist to help you move past the pain … and suffering … and help you make sense of where you’ve been and where you’d like to go. In 30 years as a licensed clinical social worker in North Carolina, I’ve worked in a variety of settings, including a wilderness camp, hospitals, schools, behavioral health agencies, correctional facilities, and social service agencies, where I worked primarily with foster children. No matter what setting, my passion has been in working with clients individually and helping them move past whatever they feel might be holding them back from reaching their full potential. My approach to working with clients is client-centered, strengths-centered, compassionate, and collaborative, as I believe there needs to be an explicit understanding of what we will be working on together. I draw upon years of using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Mindfulness, and among my areas of interest are working with clients whose lives have been affected by trauma, grief, and substance abuse. If you are currently struggling with issues that are making things difficult for you, I commend you for having the courage to reach out. If you’re struggling in your relationships, then undoubtedly it’s affecting things at work, and vice versa. That’s the way these things go. But just as things may have felt they’re beginning to unravel piece by piece, they can also begin to be put back together. Piece by piece. It’s a process, but things CAN get better. It would be my honor to be a part of your journey, but regardless I wish you nothing but the best as you take these first steps.

How does the cost of in-person sessions with a therapist compare to the cost of BetterHelp?

The average price of an in-person therapy session in the US with most therapists is $100 to $200 per hour. • With a psychiatrist: $150-$500
  • With therapists: $100-300

How do I know if BetterHelp is right for my household in Middlesex?

One of the potentially rewarding aspects of working with a therapist is the validation and active listening they can provide. Your friends and loved ones may also be available to listen, but you may feel that they may lack the skills to provide objective guidance. With a lot of people in NC, therapists may be booked out with clients. Through the list of profiles above and others within BetterHelp's team, you may be able to find a psychologist within 24 to 48 hours. If you're searching to find a a nearby psychotherapist close to 27557 or the surrounding zip codes, consider others available through the BetterHelp site where you can schedule a session based on your and the therapist's schedule. You can discuss grief, relationship concerns, stress, or life changes and ask for general feedback. A Middlesex licensed clinical social worker may help you gain power over your life and emotions while you navigate day-to-day experiences.

Gaining a new perspective on yourself through various therapies might allow you to improve your self-esteem, work through relationships, and gain a better sense of your mental health goals. The success you may find with a Middlesex counselor can be dependent on your process.

People may also attend therapy for specific motives, such as bullying, an autism diagnosis, a desire to learn mindfulness meditation, personality concerns, trouble with office workers, specific phobias, and many other principles that a counselor can help with.

Over 41 million adults in the US attend therapy services each year, showing it's a popular option and is proven to be effective.

Mental health professionals are held by ethical standards through the American Psychological Association (APA) and are not allowed to judge or harm their clients.
