Mental health care can help you cope with the challenges that life throws at you. If you’re looking for a therapist in New Jersey, consider online treatment. Barriers to treatment, like a lack of available providers in some New Jersey cities or concerns about therapy cost, can make it challenging to find in-person treatment. Online therapy can make treatment more flexible and accessible.
With BetterHelp, you can work with a marriage and family therapist, psychologist, or other mental health professional from the comfort of your home at a time that works for your schedule. Plus, you can change providers at any time until you find one with whom you have a good therapeutic relationship.
While BetterHelp does not provide services to children and adolescents or group treatment for families, the providers are skilled in various treatment modalities for adults. Therapy can help with many challenges, like body dysmorphia, depression, or healing your inner child. Your provider will help you determine your personal goals and the treatment approach to help you meet them.
If you’re looking for an online therapist, NJ has many clinicians available. The list below features professionals who are licensed to deliver online therapy across New Jersey. Schedule your first session to learn more.
William Dougherty
I have always seemed to be in a helping position. Before graduating high school I started work at a large veterinarian hospital/boarding kennel in Blue Bell, PA as an animal health technician and then the hospital administrator, where I stayed for over 15 years. I decided to return to school to pursue a degree in psychology and have been in the mental health field since 1998, working for such organizations as Special Equestrians as a side aid volunteer assisting people with physical and/or mental health disabilities and Lenape Valley Foundation as both a house advisor and a Partial Hospital Program group therapist for people with severe and persistent mental illness. I also worked for Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia for their Narcotic Addict Rehabilitation Program where I was a counselor for people addicted to heroin. I recently worked for Catholic Charities in NJ in the roles of therapist for the Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program working with kids diagnosed with substance abuse or dependence, as well as a clinical supervisor for the Comprehensive Family Treatment of Addictions Program (CFTA). This led to the position of Program Director for CFTA, the Therapeutic After-School Program (a therapeutic group for kids ages 8-12) and an In-home therapy/case management program, while also carrying a small direct-service caseload at my private practice. Finally, after taking the position of Service Area Director, with responsibility for 13 substance abuse, mental health and social service programs, I realized that I was moving further and further away from my original ambition of providing one to one service to clients. This realization led to my decision to get back into direct service. The ability to provide a safe environment for people to share their feelings, thoughts, and experiences is essential to effective counseling. Studies have shown no one therapeutic modality utilized by therapists is superior to another; rather, clinicians themselves ultimately determine whether treatment will prove effective. It’s not about the model being used; it’s the relationship between the counselor and client. This principle guides my work, in that I strive to provide a client-centered, strength-based counseling setting to individuals, couples and adolescents for issues related to addiction, anxiety, career or relationships. I look to my clients to be the experts of themselves, which encourages them to guide the therapy where it needs to go. What I offer is a space to gain insight in order for that insight to become the catalyst for change. I believe that once a person sees their truth, they have no choice but to accept that truth…though we often do our best not to. Each of us develops psychological schemas that teach us how to interact with people and the world. When we grow accustomed to a certain pattern of behavior, however, we look to repeat it, even after it’s outlived its usefulness. Addiction, for instance, is a maladaptive coping skill that worked at one time but does no longer. With a background in English literature, I bring a decidedly post-modern perspective to my therapeutic approach. One of the concepts I utilize is Narrative Therapy, which encourages and compassionately challenges clients to be mindful of the story they’re telling to better utilize their strengths. This theory acknowledges the power of language, in that not only does the language we use reflect how we feel, it also affects how we feel. Therefore, the words we choose to use can help to manifest the changes we hope to bring about. The idea is to encourage the use of more positive words as opposed to negative words while telling our life story. I have found this approach to be remarkably effective in helping clients confront the challenges of their lives in order to bring about lasting and meaningful change. Other approaches and techniques I draw from include Humanistic Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, Motivational Enhancement Therapy (with a strong working knowledge of Motivational Interviewing), Trauma Informed Therapy, and Systems Theory. I find it satisfying to be part of helping people discover who they can be and realize that perhaps they’re more than who they thought they were. Ultimately, if each of us can achieve balance and make our own little corner of the world a little bit more satisfying and a little safer, we help to create a better reality for all of us. Hello- I am a Licensed Professional Counselor who has been working in this field for over 20 years in various behavioral healthcare positions. I enjoy my profession! There are not many professions that challenge you as a practitioner to grow and develop just as much as the clients . I like to think of counseling as the gift that keeps on giving! If you met me about 24 years ago, I would have introduce myself as a elementary school teacher who loves working with children. I enjoyed my profession but I was not fulfilled. Through a series of highs and lows in my life, educators, family, friends and sometimes strangers were strategically placed at various points of my life which tilted me like a pinball in an arcade game to what I feel I was truly meant to do with my life. I guess you can tell I was an english literature major! I truly believe that every life has value and purpose. Sometimes it takes some of us longer than others to figure out what that purpose is but although we are apart of the human race, life is not a race. I have experience working in hospital settings, non-profit agencies, as well as private practice. Everyone will not agree with the choices that we make in our lives but if we can look in the mirror and be happy with the person you see looking back at you, you've won! I try to provide my clients with a safe place to learn, grow and sometimes to simply breathe and put yourself first. There is not one definition of happiness. Every person's idea of happiness is different and unique. I would welcome the opportunity to hear your idea of happiness and if you do not know it right now, help you define happiness for you. I look forward to hearing from you soon! Hello, I am a licensed clinical psychologist (NY, NJ) with more than 32 years of experience helping clients identify and resolve various life challenges. These have included stress and anxiety; sadness and depression; trauma; job, career, and life transition challenges; family issues; relationship and commitment challenges; and other aspects everyday life. My orientation tends toward cognitive-behaviorism, but I believe that no one theory or practice model will fit every situation and tend to be eclectic in my approach. I have worked with people of diverse backgrounds in many different settings. I believe that if therapy is to be successful, it should focus less on advice-giving and more on identifying one's goals and devising a plan for meeting them. The decision to begin therapy and embark on a journey which can be difficult is to be commended. I hope that I may become part of your journey.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Some commonly asked questions can be found below.
How much does a therapist cost?
Mental health professionals can differ in price. Forbes found that the average cost of in-person therapy in the US is around $100 to $200 per hour. Pricing can also vary based on your location.
BetterHelp offers payment plans of $60 to $90 per session, charged monthly in a lump sum. You can also take advantage of this pricing on one of BetterHelp's sister platforms, like ReGain for couples or TeenCounseling for teens aged 13 to 19.
Many therapists may be upfront about their pricing and whether or not they take health insurance from the beginning. Additionally, some in your area may offer a sliding scale plan to allow those with lower incomes to pay less for therapy. However, services online can often save individuals a few hundred dollars per month.
How do I know if I should get a therapist?
Mental health services and mental health providers may help you navigate various concerns. You do not need a diagnosis or condition to attend therapy; You can discuss grief, relationship concerns, stress, or life changes and ask for general advice. A counselor may help you gain power over your life and emotions while you navigate day-to-day experiences.
Mental health issues don't always present as a crisis. Many professionals provide talk therapy and support for life transitions, skills learning, relationship problems, or life coaching. Online therapy sessions in New Jersey can allow clients seeking therapy to experience professional help through video, phone, or live chat sessions without commuting to an office.
Does insurance cover therapy?
Different counseling services can vary in cost. Therapists must apply to accept insurance through insurance companies, which may take time and money, so not every therapist offers services through insurance. If you cannot find a therapist that accepts your plan, BetterHelp may be cheaper than visiting an in-person therapist.
Is online therapy safe?
Online therapy through BetterHelp and its sister platforms is safe. Therapists are licensed, experienced, and vetted before being contracted with the platform. If you experience any concerns with your therapist, you change your counselor through the platform or app at any time.
