William Dougherty
I have always seemed to be in a helping position. Before graduating high school I started work at a large veterinarian hospital/boarding kennel in Blue Bell, PA as an animal health technician and then the hospital administrator, where I stayed for over 15 years. I decided to return to school to pursue a degree in psychology and have been in the mental health field since 1998, working for such organizations as Special Equestrians as a side aid volunteer assisting people with physical and/or mental health disabilities and Lenape Valley Foundation as both a house advisor and a Partial Hospital Program group therapist for people with severe and persistent mental illness. I also worked for Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia for their Narcotic Addict Rehabilitation Program where I was a counselor for people addicted to heroin. I recently worked for Catholic Charities in NJ in the roles of therapist for the Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program working with kids diagnosed with substance abuse or dependence, as well as a clinical supervisor for the Comprehensive Family Treatment of Addictions Program (CFTA). This led to the position of Program Director for CFTA, the Therapeutic After-School Program (a therapeutic group for kids ages 8-12) and an In-home therapy/case management program, while also carrying a small direct-service caseload at my private practice. Finally, after taking the position of Service Area Director, with responsibility for 13 substance abuse, mental health and social service programs, I realized that I was moving further and further away from my original ambition of providing one to one service to clients. This realization led to my decision to get back into direct service. The ability to provide a safe environment for people to share their feelings, thoughts, and experiences is essential to effective counseling. Studies have shown no one therapeutic modality utilized by therapists is superior to another; rather, clinicians themselves ultimately determine whether treatment will prove effective. It’s not about the model being used; it’s the relationship between the counselor and client. This principle guides my work, in that I strive to provide a client-centered, strength-based counseling setting to individuals, couples and adolescents for issues related to addiction, anxiety, career or relationships. I look to my clients to be the experts of themselves, which encourages them to guide the therapy where it needs to go. What I offer is a space to gain insight in order for that insight to become the catalyst for change. I believe that once a person sees their truth, they have no choice but to accept that truth…though we often do our best not to. Each of us develops psychological schemas that teach us how to interact with people and the world. When we grow accustomed to a certain pattern of behavior, however, we look to repeat it, even after it’s outlived its usefulness. Addiction, for instance, is a maladaptive coping skill that worked at one time but does no longer. With a background in English literature, I bring a decidedly post-modern perspective to my therapeutic approach. One of the concepts I utilize is Narrative Therapy, which encourages and compassionately challenges clients to be mindful of the story they’re telling to better utilize their strengths. This theory acknowledges the power of language, in that not only does the language we use reflect how we feel, it also affects how we feel. Therefore, the words we choose to use can help to manifest the changes we hope to bring about. The idea is to encourage the use of more positive words as opposed to negative words while telling our life story. I have found this approach to be remarkably effective in helping clients confront the challenges of their lives in order to bring about lasting and meaningful change. Other approaches and techniques I draw from include Humanistic Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, Motivational Enhancement Therapy (with a strong working knowledge of Motivational Interviewing), Trauma Informed Therapy, and Systems Theory. I find it satisfying to be part of helping people discover who they can be and realize that perhaps they’re more than who they thought they were. Ultimately, if each of us can achieve balance and make our own little corner of the world a little bit more satisfying and a little safer, we help to create a better reality for all of us. Emily Cyburt
Hello! My name is Emily Cyburt, and I have been an outpatient mental health therapist since 2013, and have been licensed since 2019 in the state of Pennsylvania as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Master of Science degree in Community Counseling. I am a Certified Personality Disorder Treatment Provider (C-PD) with training to treat individuals with personality disorders, as well as help those being affected by someone in their life with a personality disorder. I am also a Certified Integrative Mental Health Provider (CIMHP) trained in evidence based holistic approaches to prevent and treat common mental health problems. Additionally, I am recognized as a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) with the National Board of Certified Counselors since 2018, a voluntary national certification, and the largest national counselor certification in the world, that identifies counselors who have met national standards set by the profession. I prefer to work with teens, young adults, and middle aged persons. I am most comfortable and competent in treating those with anxiety, depression, stress, low self esteem/self confidence, relationship/marital problems, and family problems. The areas in which I have the least, or minimal experience in treating are trauma-focused, grief and loss, and post-partum issues/depression. My counseling style is non-Christian based, truthful and honest. I believe change can only occur through dedication to the process, hard work outside of session, honest reflection, and working together as a team. My approach combines Person Centered, Cognitive Behavioral, Psychoeducational, and Rational-Emotive counseling. But what does all that mean? Person-centered therapy is talk therapy wherein you, the client, does most of the talking. I will not judge or try to interpret what you say, but may restate your words in an attempt to fully understand your thoughts and feelings. CBT places an emphasis on changing thinking patterns. Through exercises in the session, as well as “homework” exercises outside of sessions, clients are helped to develop coping skills, whereby they can learn to change their own thinking, problematic emotions, and behavior. Psychoeducation helps people better understand (and become accustomed to living with) mental health conditions. It is generally known that those who have a thorough understanding of the challenges they are facing as well as knowledge of personal coping ability, internal and external resources, and their own areas of strength are often better able to address difficulties, feel more in control of the condition(s), and have a greater internal capacity to work toward mental and emotional well-being. REBT is an action-oriented approach that’s focused on helping people deal with irrational beliefs and learn how to manage their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in a healthier, more realistic way. Using these approaches, we will work together to create a plan and goals to help you achieve success. It takes courage to seek help and to take the first steps towards a change. If you are ready to take that step I am here to support and empower you. I look forward to working with you!
Denise Bunner
Hello, my name is Denise. I have been a Counselor/Therapist for over 30 years. Through my years of experience, I have found that a client centered approach is often the most effective. Each client's story is unique and I want to have the opportunity to hear their story before going forward with a specific style of therapy. I listen with compassion and then review with the client the key points of their experience. Sometimes I ask difficult questions with the intention of helping the client to look at themselves from a different perspective. Counseling can be hard work, and so I want the client to feel that they are working toward the best outcome possible. Sometimes that will take a couple of sessions, sometimes it can take much longer. I will offer suggestions regarding the duration of therapy, but ultimately that decision is made by the client. All of us have heard the phrase, "these are unprecedented times." Yes, we all have been introduced to extraordinary change in the past couple of years. As a clinician, I am always searching for new ways of helping myself, my family and my community to work with the changes we are experiencing. Change is difficult for many people, but with help, I feel that each of us is capable of making whatever change is necessary to create a better tomorrow. Over the past 5 years, I have been exploring alternative ways of helping people cope with the issues that have led to anxiety, depression, sadness and grief. After reading Bessel Van Der Kolk's book "The Body Keeps The Score," I recognized that the human psyche needs to learn how to release the pain that is stored in the body. I have recently completed the Eden Energy Medicine 4 year program. Based on the amazing information I learned through EEM, I will be sharing ways to release the pain stored in our body by sharing simple techniques that help to ground and relax the body. I often refer the members I am working with to one of Donna Eden's books that detail many of the techniques that I have been sharing with people. I encourage you to look for Donna's book, "Energy Medicine: Balancing Your Body's Energies for Optimal Health, Joy, and Vitality." Then contact me for questions and guidance on how to integrate these techniques into your life. I do believe that each of us can live with optimal health, joy, and vitality.
Sarah Matas
Hello, and thank you for taking the time to find out more about me. I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 20 years of experience helping individuals and families manage life’s transitions. I received a Master’s degree from Bryn Mawr Graduate School of Social Work and have worked primarily in the world of hospice, medical home care and long-term care, visiting clients’ homes to help navigate chronic health issues, stress and anxiety, depression, grief and loss and caregiver burnout. My approach to therapy is to start in the here and now and to focus on my client’s strengths. I strongly believe that all of us, as individuals, are doing the very best we can with the tools we have on hand. Lasting change can and does occur when we develop new tools, new ways of seeing ourselves and new ways of interpreting the world around us. I take a humanistic approach to my work and recognize that each client is the real expert in this work we call therapy. My job is simply to understand, to show genuine, heartfelt concern and to empower each client to grow and change in the ways they envision. I also believe that our thoughts are powerful motivating forces but can also serve to de-motivate us. Have you ever experienced feeling sad or lonely because of the way you thought about something, only to later find out that your thinking was distorted? How crucial it is to uncover our dysfunctional thoughts! Being a social worker is who I am, not something I do. Over the course of my life I’ve been a mother, including a stint as a single mom, a grandmother, a colleague, a boss and a caregiver and I know that I can help you get to that “better place” you envision for yourself.

How do I know if online counseling is right for my family in Olyphant?
One of the potentially rewarding aspects of working with a therapist is the validation and active listening they can provide. Your friends and loved ones may also be available to listen, but you may feel that they may lack the skills to provide objective guidance. Counselors are trained to respond to various concerns, symptoms, and mental health conditions.
Therapists in your city can support you toward a healthier emotional state, regardless of your mental health, life concerns, or healing needs. While supporting individuals in developing healthier habits, another good benefit of Olyphant therapy is having an understanding, safe space with a non-judgmental party who can support you through challenging experiences.
Many people have sensitive topics that they may feel ashamed to discuss with their friends or partner. A therapist can help you confront these concerns and open up through unique methods of support. There are also many types of therapy, such as art therapy, where you may find you can express yourself through creativity instead of words with a psychotherapist.
With a lot of people in PA, therapists may be booked out with clients. Through the list of profiles above and others within BetterHelp's team, you may be able to find a psychologist within 24 to 48 hours. If you're searching to find a a nearby psychotherapist close to 18448 or the surrounding zip codes, consider others available through the BetterHelp site where you can schedule a session based on your and the therapist's schedule. Should I find a therapist or psychologist for therapy if I feel fine?
Some simply don't feel the need to see a psychologist. However, some people may avoid attending therapy due to stigma or preconceived notions of what it might entail. Although psychologists often support people with mental health conditions, you do not need a diagnosis or specific condition. You can discuss grief, relationship concerns, stress, or life changes and ask for general feedback. A Olyphant licensed clinical social worker may help you gain power over your life and emotions while you navigate day-to-day experiences.
Gaining a new perspective on yourself through various therapies might allow you to improve your self-esteem, work through relationships, and gain a better sense of your mental health goals. The success you may find with a Olyphant counselor can be dependent on your process.
People may also attend therapy for specific motives, such as bullying, an autism diagnosis, a desire to learn mindfulness meditation, personality concerns, trouble with office workers, specific phobias, and many other principles that a counselor can help with.

Is mental health care and therapy with a therapist worth it?
Therapy with a licensed counselor is effective and has the power to change individuals' lives. Each client is at a different stage of their emotional healing journey in life, as each human can be unique in their personality, expression, skills, and goals. An experienced clinician can target various symptoms, experiences, and personalities to help you feel your best and put you on the path to healing. Unlike advice from a friend, family, or non-professional, a mental health therapist has an understanding of various disorders like ADHD and depression with many hours of experience in treating adults in their practice. For this reason, seeing an evidence based licensed clinician in Olyphant, Pennsylvania can be worth it. Over 41 million adults in the US attend therapy services each year, showing it's a popular option and is proven to be effective.
Olyphant has many clinicians who practice person or client-centered individual therapy in-person and through online sessions to assist clients in their healing journey. If you opt into online therapy, you might also be able to meet with providers all over the United States and change easily at any time. Many people struggling with anxiety and depression, substance abuse, body image issues, and more find therapists that are a good fit for them, feel supported, and gain further insight into their lives through internet-based therapy.
Do therapists judge you in therapy sessions during telehealth appointments?
The boundaries between you and a therapist are in place to help you and them regarding ethical concerns. Mental health professionals are held by ethical standards through the American Psychological Association (APA) and are not allowed to judge or harm their clients. If you are concerned about sharing details about yourself, feel free to withhold personal information. Their job in the therapeutic relationship is to create a safe place, help you gain a deeper understanding of your mental health, and support you. You might consider changing counselors if you don't feel safe or respected.
