Your past can be valuable, or it can be something that has haunted you to this day. In life, we can’t control our pasts, but it can sure control us. It can be hard to move on from trauma or tragedy, or just deal with the consequences of what our past has done to us. A counselor based in Alexandria can help.

Alexandria is known for being the antique capital of the world. Antiques and old theaters cover the town. A counselor can help you find the valuable parts of your past and display them to the world, all while sweeping away the parts of the past holding you back.

Anita Adjetey (Founder & CEO of Passion Youth Center- www.pycaa.com) has worked with children (4 yrs. & up), college students, and adults for 12+ years. She is particularly interested in advanced training in working with children, adolescents, youth, and young adults who have experienced trauma, displayed at-risk behaviors, or problems with self-esteem, anxiety, depression, as well as training in addressing social skills, relational issues, and career coaching. In addition, she has conscientiously pursued many trainings related to children's developmental stages and issues, attended various workshops and seminars and gained school counseling licensure, all of which enabled her to construct a solid groundwork for more advanced studies. One of her many strengths is her ability to establish authentic relationships with those she works with, using a person-centered technique. Her style is highly solution-focused, preferring an integrative approach to therapy as the grounds to provide a foundation for building relationships with clients. She has developed a philosophy to listen to and meet individuals where they are, and accept the incongruence that working with children, youth, and adults may bring. She has a great ability to establish authentic relationships with those she works with. She recognizes that an open and honest relationship between client and counselor can produce a positive effect in the therapeutic process and the level of acceptance demonstrated between the two parties. She intends to use person-centered technique, solution-focused and the integrative/systemic approach to therapy as a strength to help provide the foundation for relationships with clients. She exercises empathy, congruence, and unconditional positive regard, and strives to understand the client’s world in whatever way they wish to share. I am a clinical psychologist with over 23 years of clinical experience. I have provided therapy in juvenile justice, residential treatment and currently Veterans. I have experience treating mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma, women’s issues and substance abuse. I primarily approach therapy from a cognitive behavioral perspective. I seek to help clients understand how unhelpful thinking patterns prompt negative emotions and keep a person stuck and unrecovered. I see therapy as an opportunity to help my client identify the roots of unhelpful thinking patterns, identify opportunities for change and engage in the work of modifying behaviors that often lead to distress. The best quality of life for my client is the overarching treatment goal. I see the therapeutic process as a safe and supportive environment in which negative cycles may be broken. I work hard to establish a therapeutic relationship through compassion and genuine feedback. Therapy is a collaborative endeavor and I appreciate the honor of walking this journey with those in pain. I love what I do!

My name is Dr. Eric Niler, and I am a licensed psychologist who has been working in private practice for more than 30 years. Using cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), I treat adults with anxiety, depression, chronic pain, trauma/abuse, adjustment disorders, and work-related stresses. In session, my personal approach is caring, compassionate and conscientious, but with a side of humor, since I think it's important that we don't take ourselves too seriously as we try to navigate and adapt to life's many challenges and stressors. Therapy is a collaborative process between patient and therapist, and I will always encourage feedback to ensure that you feel that our work is moving at a good pace and in the right direction, whether you are looking for a short-term, solution-focused process or a more gradual exploration of past and current experiences. I've been providing video telehealth services since the Spring of 2020 and am in the process of transitioning my practice completely to telehealth. While I will provide telephone services when necessary, I prefer video sessions because I believe that visual information and feedback are too important to routinely exclude from the therapy process. I am available for 30-45 minute live telehealth sessions. Although most of my open slots in the calendar are for later in the week, I generally have some availability earlier in the week as well. Feel free to ask if you need a day and/or time not designated as "available." I look forward to meeting and working with you!

James Harmon

My full name is James Phillip Harmon but I generally use my middle name, Phillip or Phil; however, I am not too fussy about this. I live in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and have worked in both in-patient and outpatient settings as a Licensed Professional Counselor for just over 30 years. These settings have allowed me to work with people who are experiencing stress, depression, anxiety, trauma, abuse and addiction issues, pretty much general practice. My initial counseling education was in Adlerian Psychology. This foundation has been strengthened and expanded with later training in Marsha Linehan's Dialectical Behavior Therapy. Alfred Adler was a social psychiatrist who taught that all human behavior has a purpose that makes sense to the individual. He taught that we develop a personal understanding and beliefs about life that we use in our efforts to address the challenges of finding where we belong in society, finding how we can best contribute to society and in establishing and maintaining relationships. Adlerians believe that we all have what are called "mistaken beliefs" things that are true because we believe them but are only true to us, not in the more general context of society as a whole. A more contemporary approach, that in my opinion builds upon some of what Adler taught, is Marsha Linehan's Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). This approach sees the individual as being the expert on and about themselves. Again, we have mistaken beliefs that are our truths and the issue becomes adjusting these beliefs, if we choose to do so, to help us respond in a more effective manner to the challenges life presents. Therapy is something that happens between two equal partners, not a technique that is imposed. The therapist and client may have very different beliefs and opinions about what is happeneing. Both are correct; they simply disagree. The best solution to a problem is the one that is most effective for helping the client build the life they want to have. I believe that you have the ability, the strength and the courage to identify and make needful changes that can help you have a more satisfying life. It can a bit of work but is well worth the effort. A large part of the therapist's job is to ask questions, make comments and suggestions, maybe challenge a bit to help the client find their answers.

The average price of an in-person therapy session in the US with most therapists is $100 to $200 per hour. These prices may be higher in Alexandria due to a higher cost of living, and a limited number of therapists taking new clients. The price also depends on the type of provider you are looking for. See the following average prices for various mental health providers without insurance:

  • With a psychiatrist: $150-$500
  • With therapists: $100-300

Is BetterHelp right for me?

One of the potentially rewarding aspects of working with a therapist is the validation and active listening they can provide. Your friends and loved ones may also be available to listen, but you may feel that they may lack the skills to provide objective guidance. Counselors are trained to respond to various concerns, symptoms, and mental health conditions.

Therapists in your city can support you toward a healthier emotional state, regardless of your mental health, life concerns, or healing needs. While supporting individuals in developing healthier habits, another good benefit of therapy in Alexandria is having an understanding, safe space with a non-judgmental party who can support you through challenging experiences.

Should I find a Alexandria therapist or psychologist for therapy if I feel fine?

Some simply don't feel the need to see a psychologist. However, some people may avoid attending therapy due to stigma or preconceived notions of what it might entail. Although psychologists often support people with mental health conditions, you do not need a diagnosis or specific condition. You can discuss grief, relationship concerns, stress, or life changes and ask for general feedback. A Alexandria licensed clinical social worker may help you gain power over your life and emotions while you navigate day-to-day experiences.

Gaining a new perspective on yourself through various therapies might allow you to improve your self-esteem, work through relationships, and gain a better sense of your mental health goals. The success you may find with a counselor can be dependent on your process.

People may also attend therapy for specific motives, such as bullying, an autism diagnosis, a desire to learn mindfulness meditation, personality concerns, trouble with office workers, specific phobias, and many other principles that a counselor can help with.
