The City of Fort Bragg, California was established in the summer of 1857 by First Lieutenant Horatio G. Gibson who built a military post there about a mile and a half north of the Noyo River. It was named after the former commanding officer, Captain Braxton Bragg, who later became a General in the Confederate Army.
