Lindsey Wehn
Hello! My name is Lindsey Wehn and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the State of California. I am so happy to be here to support others as they go through difficult times in their lives, for those who want to make changes, or for those who just want someone for a little extra emotional support. I'm thrilled that the BetterHelp platform is here to open up therapy to so many more people. We are not limited by location and time anymore, and we have the added benefit of messaging in between sessions. (Please note that my license restricts me to only seeing clients who are physically in California. I unfortunately cannot see you if you are traveling out of state.) In my work, one of the biggest issues I see with others is a lack of self confidence. This lack of confidence can lead to many different other issues, such as depression, anxiety, low self esteem, and problems in social, family and work environments. When one is willing and able to address where these self confidence issues are coming from and how they are manifesting in one’s life now, we can work together to bring on more self acceptance and internal peace. I’m a big believer in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) combined with Mindfulness approaches. While CBT challenges your thoughts in order to change how you are feeling, mindfulness begs for you to stay in the present without changing anything. How can these two concepts make sense together? Mindfulness teaches us how to get in touch with what the feeling is without judgment and with acceptance. CBT teaches us to observe, evaluate, understand, and change our thoughts if they are maladaptive. There is so much here we can delve into as we work together. I always employ a Person Centered approach, which means I bring in non-judgment and non- bias, and work hard to understand your issue and where you are coming from. I also think it’s really important that you feel comfortable with me. I believe that the therapeutic relationship is the most important part of therapy in order for you to reach your goals. If you can trust me and feel comfortable expressing things to me, you will be much more likely to benefit from this experience. If you are a parent: One of my passions is working with individuals on parenting issues and helping them build strong connections with their families. I’ve learned a lot through my work, through research, and through personal experience as a parent that our old views on discipline just don’t work and do not help to build emotionally healthy and successful children. Not only do I help others learn new ways of interacting with their children to build happier, healthier homes, but I help you uncover why parenting can be so difficult at times. How we were raised and what’s going on for us in our lives play a big role in how we parent our children in the present. If you are a parent and you feel like things could improve, I would love to help with this. Therapy is what you make of it, and the more you are engaged in the process, the more you will benefit. My suggestion is that you utilize both the ability to message me at any time, and schedule sessions with me (video, chat or phone) as they fit your schedule. On a more personal level, I live in Northern California with my husband and two young daughters. I have 2 dogs and 4 cats. I love hiking and being outdoors. I have been Licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist since 2012, though have been working in this field since 2005 in various settings. I have experience in family therapy, working with children, in particular those dealing with trauma, individual and group therapy with children, adolescents and adults; case management working with adults with severe mental illnesses in a supported living environment; and emancipated foster youth (ages 16-24). I earned my BA in Psychology from UC Santa Barbara in 2004, and my MA in Psychology from Chapman University College in 2007. I am happy to be here to build relationships with others, and hopefully help them feel more content and happy in their lives. I look forward to meeting you! -Lindsey Wehn, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

How should I prepare for my first therapy session with a Oakdale counselor?
Before seeing your Oakdale therapist, prep for your session by reading to understand the process. You might write a list of questions you want to ask your psychotherapist, any emotional pain you may feel, and the ways in which you hope to improve. When you attend your session, you can let our therapists know if you have any concerns or feel unsure about what to talk about. Oakdale therapists here may help guide you with open-ended therapeutic questions while offering mental health services. The first session will often serve as an intake to get to know you as a person and learn why you're attending therapy.
Should I find a therapist or psychologist for therapy if I feel fine?
Some simply don't feel the need to see a psychologist. However, some people may avoid attending therapy due to stigma or preconceived notions of what it might entail. Although psychologists often support people with mental health conditions, you do not need a diagnosis or specific condition. You can discuss grief, relationship concerns, stress, or life changes and ask for general feedback. A Oakdale licensed clinical social worker may help you gain power over your life and emotions while you navigate day-to-day experiences.
Gaining a new perspective on yourself through various therapies might allow you to improve your self-esteem, work through relationships, and gain a better sense of your mental health goals. The success you may find with a Oakdale counselor can be dependent on your process.
People may also attend therapy for specific motives, such as bullying, an autism diagnosis, a desire to learn mindfulness meditation, personality concerns, trouble with office workers, specific phobias, and many other principles that a counselor can help with.
Is mental health care and therapy with a therapist worth it?
Therapy with a licensed counselor is effective and has the power to change individuals' lives. Each client is at a different stage of their emotional healing journey in life, as each human can be unique in their personality, expression, skills, and goals. A psychologist can target various symptoms, experiences, and personalities to help you feel your best and put you on the path to healing. Unlike advice from a friend, family, or non-professional, a mental health therapist has an understanding of various disorders like ADHD and depression with many hours of experience in treating adults in their practice. For this reason, seeing an evidence based psychologist in Oakdale, California can be worth it. Over 41 million adults in the US attend therapy services each year, showing it's a popular option and is proven to be effective.
Oakdale has many clinicians who practice person or client-centered individual therapy in-person and through online sessions to assist clients in their healing journey. If you opt into online therapy, you might also be able to meet with providers all over the United States and change therapists easily at any time. Many people struggling with anxiety and depression, substance abuse, body image issues, and more find therapists that are a good fit for them, feel supported, and gain further insight into their lives through internet-based therapy.
Do therapists judge you in therapy sessions during telehealth appointments?
The boundaries between you and a therapist are in place to help you and them regarding ethical concerns. Mental health professionals are held by ethical standards through the American Psychological Association (APA) and are not allowed to judge or harm their clients. If you are concerned about sharing details about yourself, feel free to withhold personal information. Their job in the therapeutic relationship is to create a safe place, help you gain a deeper understanding of your mental health, and support you. You might consider changing counselors if you don't feel safe or respected.
