My name is Kristy Hamilton, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in California, having also worked professionally in Colorado. I work as a Medical/Hospice Social Worker, and have a small private practice called Malibu Walk and Talk Therapy. I have also worked in a dual-diagnosis facility as a Program Manager and therapist, and Clinic as their Behavioral Health Provider. My experience working with individuals and families has covered a wide range of concerns related to stress, mood, parenting, family conflict, moves and life transitions, obsessions and compulsions, addictions, organizational issues, hoarding, workplace issues, care-giver challenges, and aging issues. I grew up and attended a variety of churches over the years as we have moved and spent time abroad, and find that these experiences have enabled me to grow and love the uniqueness of individuals and the place one's past and environment have on the present. The connection between therapist and client is one of the biggest factors for success, and so I will listen to best understand your current situation and concerns. My counseling style is collaborative and interactive, respectful, warm, and practical. I draw from cognitive-behavioral, client and solution-focused, motivational, attachment-based, existential, and dialectical behavior therapies. I focus primarily on present circumstances and work collaboratively to better understand one's past and environment, and to adjust unproductive patterns of thinking and behaving as you move forward. My license allows me to provide professional counseling in California and Colorado, and am available via phone, live chat, or video for counseling sessions almost every day of the week since my schedule is flexible. The life experience I have as a parent and professional may be very helpful for you as you courageously reach out during this time. I want you to get the short or long-term support and counsel best suited for you and your present situation.

As counselor, my role is to guide you to a lifestyle that embodies a sense of stability, peace, and feeling of progression. Together we work toward managing and removing the barriers that prevent reaching life's meaning and purposeful goals. I will frequently inquire from you an evaluation, if my approach feels comfortable for you since counseling is a place to stimulate empowerment and growth. Because counseling is a safe environment to communicate what's on your mind in a non-judgmental environment, I want to make sure you have the space to explore the deep recesses of your heart, at your pace, in your time. When you are ready to speak or just be, I am available to support you. I am here for you.

30 years of experience offering psychology treatment

I have been working in the mental health field for the last 27 years in which I have experience in several different genres of clientele. I have worked in both inpatient care and outpatient services. These services have included family systems, individual and family counseling, domestic violence, chemical addiction-gambling addictions, and severe mental health needs. Currently, I am serving in a correctional setting with incarcerated offenders with a specialized program for Juveniles Convicted as Adults Program assisting the offender to transfer from a correctional setting after serving at least 25 years of their sentence. To assist those to understand my clinical approach to counseling, I take a client-centered, solution-focused approached to counseling. By using both cognitive-behavioral and logotherapy techniques, I assist those who chose to engage in therapy to understand the drivers to their behaviors and addressing purpose and meaning in their lives. To understand Logotherapy, it is a school of psychology and a philosophy based on the idea that we are strongly motivated to live purposefully and meaningfully, and that we find meaning in life as a result of responding authentically and humanely (i.e. meaningfully) to life's challenges. By using Logotherapy and understanding our belief systems we can better understand how we can make changes to our thoughts, feelings, and actions.

Trinidad therapist & psychologist Elizabeth McKinley providing different types of therapy in Trinidad

Elizabeth McKinley

Clinician serving Trinidad, CO
License Type(s): Licensed Professional Counselor,National Certified Counselor
Mental Wellness Specialties: Family conflictsTrauma and abuseBipolar disorderDepressionCoping with life changes
27 years of experience offering psychology treatment

I have been providing therapy/counseling in various settings for almost 30 years, most recently hospital-based psychiatric emergency crisis intervention. My areas of expertise include: crisis intervention; suicide risk assessment, prevention, and safety planning; general substance abuse treatment information in Colorado; parenting (human growth & development, infants to adolescents to adults); supervised and therapeutic visitation for non-custodial parents/guardians; family conflict (not to be confused with couples counseling); couples counseling; cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for "big T" and "little t" trauma; CBT for depression & anxiety; milieu treatment of severe mental illness (affect disorders such as depression/bipolar; psychotic disorders/personality disorders; treatment compliance) for adults; solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT); culturally competent behavioral health services; psychopharmacology for therapists; women’s issues (reproductive rights, infertility, sexism, domestic violence/intimate partner violence); end-of-life decisions; grief and bereavement; and non-emergent crisis intervention. My therapeutic approach is simple & straightforward talk therapy, formally referred to as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Something in your life is currently causing you distress and you want help, from a neutral source, finding ways to cope with and work through the issue(s) so it no longer interferes with your ability to live your best life. This type of therapy encompasses exploration of healthy boundaries, self-advocacy, effective communication and coping skills, goal-setting, and reduction of unwanted and unhealthy automatic thoughts (catastrophizing, hindsight bias). The therapeutic relationship that will occur between us consists of identifying the issue(s), mapping past responses & outcomes, separating what you can & can’t control, exploring your strengths, and developing a new plan to manage the problem(s). My job as a therapist is to empower you to develop insight and create your own solutions, not solve the problem for you. Once you’ve created & implemented your plan, I will provide support, encouragement, and reinforcement. In addition to CBT, I provide Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). SFBT concentrates on finding solutions in the present and exploring ways to find a quick and pragmatic resolution of one’s problem(s). This method takes the approach that you know what you need to do to improve your own life and, with the appropriate coaching and questioning, are capable of quickly finding the best solution(s). Another therapeutic modality I incorporate into CBT is motivational interviewing, which encourages clients to talk about their needs and stages of change, and talk about aspects of their personal history previously not considered relevant. I provide couples counseling using CBT and the framework of the Gottman Method. My role as a therapist is to evoke a conversation about change, commitment, and to elicit information from you. I listen and reflect your thoughts and personal history so that you can hear/see your own reasoning, motivation, and experiences expressed from someone other than yourself. Last, I incorporate psychoeducation and mindfulness within the other modalities I practice. Psychoeducation combines elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy, group therapy, and education. The goal is to provide clients with facts about various facets of mental illness/wellness and its treatment, not pop culture distortions. This facilitates working with your therapist for a better overall outcome. I have an extensive library of resources designed to help you process and practice the issues we discuss in therapy in between sessions. Please know that I will correct misperceptions and misunderstandings about psychology, mental health, and human behavior. I don't do this to belittle my clients. I do this to educate. Pop culture and Dr. Google are anathema to me. The benefits of a trained, experienced therapist are objectivity, neutrality, expertise in models of human behavior, expertise in the neurobiology of trauma and attachment, and expertise in therapeutic modalities. In addition to my Colorado Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) credential, I am a Board Certified Nounselor, aka National Certified Counselor, "NCC", which means I completed a graduate program with the highest level of accreditation, passed the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC) examination ("NCE"), and adhere to the rigorous ethics and principles of the NBCC as well as the American Counseling Association, established specifically for Licensed Professional Counselors across the United States. I completed training November 2022 to provide clinical supervision to new therapists pursuing licensure (LPCs only in Colorado). I completed 10 hours of training in the Neurobiology of Trauma through the National Institute of the Clinical Application of Behavioral Medicine (NICABM) February 2023. This training will enhance my ability to provide therapy for people who are survivors of past and/or current trauma. I also completed seven hours of training January 2023 to provide culturally competent behavioral health services to Native Americans and Alaska Natives. Currently (2024), I've enrolled in and completed or am completing several hours of Continuing Education (CE)training: I provide weekly therapy and believe that clients need to continue their treatment in between sessions. With my extensive library of resources that include fact sheets; journals; workbooks; symptom trackers; guided mindful meditations; and worksheets, you can continue to work on therapy in between sessions. If, at any point in therapy, I determine that I lack the expertise to provide sufficient therapeutic assistance to you I will assist you in finding a therapist on Betterhelp who can better meet your needs. It is also not uncommon for clients & therapists to fail to make a therapeutic connection. It’s important for both of us to be forthcoming about this if it occurs. You also have the right to a second opinion and to discontinue services with me at any time. Please remember that therapy isn't a "get out of jail free" card. It can be hard work and often requires you to tap into emotions, memories, and behaviors that are difficult for you to process. I will be your advocate but will also be direct and forthright, which may include giving you feedback that may be difficult for you to hear and accept. I am an "informal" but direct therapist. Honesty is essential in a psychotherapeutic relationship. If our interactions aren't sincere and forthcoming you will not experience much benefit from therapy. I will ALWAYS encourage you to ask questions and express disagreement. I actually have a crystal ball, but it doesn't allow me to sneak a peak into your future or past. I'm also not a mind reader. I don't analyze my clients, although I often analyze situations--with them (you). Every human being is different. You must be willing to look inward and learn about yourself. Strength comes from within, as do the solutions to your problems. My job is to metaphorically walk by your side as you sort things out. In certain situations I will strongly recommend medication for you in addition to therapy (if you are not already taking medication). Some mental health problems are serious and require medication to reasonably manage the illness. I am a fierce mental health advocate. We all experience times in our lives that test our strength. There’s no weakness in acknowledging this and being proactive about seeking help. It takes a lot of strength to admit you’re struggling. Remember, your mental health is as important as your physical health. It's important for everyone to know that not all undesirable behavior is due to mental illness; in fact, most of it is not. Not believing, knowing, or understanding this fact perpetuates the stigma of mental illness. This dangerous misunderstanding or ignorance implies that all people who have a mental illness are poorly behaved and therefore inherently flawed, but nothing could be further from the truth. Having said that, mental illness does not excuse harmful behavior but it can explain the reason. I also know that the vast majority of people who have a chronic mental illness can and do have successful, fulfilling lives. As we increase awareness we improve treatment, erase the stigma, and create a world where mental health and wellness are embraced as a healthcare priority. I look forward to working with you. Thank you for taking the time to read this rather long introduction!

I am a graduate of Michigan State University with a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology. I have been licensed to practice psychology since 2005. I have over 25 years of professional experience as it relates to working with clients from diverse backgrounds with a multitude of concerns. Understanding that one treatment modality or therapy approach does not fit all, my approach to counseling is foundationally based on meeting clients where they currently are and building bridges from there. I believe the quintessential ingredient in producing optimal behavioral outcomes is to understand associated emotions and thinking. One of the ways in which I can assist, is to help clients identify triggers and restructure faulty thinking patterns.

I am a marriage and family therapist licensed in the states of Colorado and California with over 25 years of experience working with clients ranging in development from young children to the elderly. I have worked with individuals struggling with anxiety and depression, with couples who had reached an impasse in their communication and those experiencing parenting problems. I understand the dynamics of substance abuse and have helped guide individuals towards treatment. I also have extensive experience with crisis intervention and helping families move from being problem-focused to becoming solution-focused. My approach to therapy is strongly rooted in exploring the family of origin and how the family we come from is so instrumental in shaping our beliefs and behaviors, which sometimes do not serve us. I believe that with an understanding of how family dynamics shape one’s sense of self, comes empowerment, which then enables an individual to recognize maladaptive thought processes and change the way they think about themselves, their choices and their subsequent behaviors. What I bring to the table is a strong, empathetic nature and the ability to listen intently and patiently. I possess an innate ability to conceptualize what you tell me in a way that brings a deeper understanding. You've taken the first step towards seeking a happier and more fulfilling life by reaching out for support. I'll be here each step of the way to guide you in your journey. I look forward to working with you!

Hi, my name is Connie Owens and I am a licensed therapist with more than 20 years of experience in helping others. During these 2+ decades, I have obtained a medical license to practice in multiple states and learned that while being evidence-based trained is helpful it is better to be evidence-based informed. It is a fact that we are each unique and that what works for one may not work for another. That is why I utilize a Holistic Approach; I fully understand that to heal the whole you, we must treat the whole you. In all facets of therapy, we will address the 4 human interdependent parts; Mind, Body, Soul, and Spirit. I have experience in various areas from birth-death (or Hospice). I am a Certified Clinical Trauma Therapist with several years of experience in helping others overcome trauma. And, it is hard these days not to mention trauma without discussing Narcissistic Abuse, which I also specialize in. I have helped hundreds of women and men not only break free from Narcissistic Abuse but also break the cycle so it does not happen again. Additionally, I also have many years of experience in Christian Counseling, Substance Use Disorders, Relationship Issues, Grief and Loss, Mental Health, Individual Therapy, and Group Therapy. More recently (although I have implemented these principles all along) I have wrapped up my Certification in Functional Nutrition and can now add to my resume that I am a Board Certified Holistic Mental Health Practitioner. Nutrition is only 1 area of focus with me. Your mental health is affected by everything you are exposed to so together we will address those things and come up with a plan that works for you so you can live your best quality of life. My approach is gentle, yet direct. I will always meet you where you are and respect all of your beliefs and values. I believe in treating everyone with respect, sensitivity, and compassion. I will tailor our dialog and treatment plan to meet your unique and specific needs. My overall treatment approach is a Holistic Approach that utilizes CBT, DBT, Psychodynamic, Motivational Interviewing, and Biblical Principles and Truths for those looking for Christ -Centered Therapy- AKA an Eclectic Approach. It takes courage to ask for help and commit to make changes, to improve your quality of life. I get that, so when you're ready I am here to empower you in your healing journey by supporting you and teaching you how to do it. One thing I'd like you to remember is-If you put in the work you will get the results.

Some other commonly asked questions on therapy with a licensed counselor and BetterHelp serving the Trinidad area can be found below:

How does the cost of in-person counseling with a therapist compare to the cost of BetterHelp with a licensed Trinidad therapist?

The average price of an in-person therapy session in the US with most therapists is $100 to $200 per hour. These prices may be higher in Trinidad due to a higher cost of living, and a limited number of therapists taking new clients. The price also depends on the type of provider you are looking for. See the following average prices for various mental health providers without insurance:

  • Counseling with a psychiatrist: $150-$500
  • Counseling with therapists: $100-300

While many psychologists in Trinidad may not take health insurance, some in the state of Colorado may work on a sliding scale, meaning they'll factor in your income and charge what you can afford per session. How do I know if online counseling is right for my family in Trinidad?

One of the potentially rewarding aspects of working with a therapist is the validation and active listening they can provide. Your friends and loved ones may also be available to listen, but you may feel that they may lack the skills to provide objective guidance. Counselors are trained to respond to various concerns, symptoms, and mental health conditions.

Therapists in your city can support you toward a healthier emotional state, regardless of your mental health, life concerns, or healing needs. While supporting individuals in developing healthier habits, another good benefit of Trinidad therapy is having an understanding, safe space with a non-judgmental party who can support you through challenging experiences.

Many people have sensitive topics that they may feel ashamed to discuss with their friends or partner. A therapist can help you confront these concerns and open up through unique methods of support. There are also many types of therapy, such as art therapy, where you may find you can express yourself through creativity instead of words with a psychotherapist.

How should I prepare for my first therapy session with a Trinidad counselor?

Before seeing your therapist near you, prep for your session by reading to understand the process. You might write a list of questions you want to ask your psychotherapist, any emotional pain you may feel, and the ways in which you hope to improve. When you attend your session, you can let our therapists know if you have any concerns or feel unsure about what to talk about. Trinidad therapists near you may help guide you with open-ended therapeutic questions while offering mental health services. The first session will often serve as an intake to get to know you as a person and learn how to best help and support you.

Should I find a therapist or psychologist for therapy if I feel fine?

Some simply don't feel the need to see a psychologist. However, some people may avoid attending therapy due to stigma or preconceived notions of what it might entail. Although psychologists often support people with mental health conditions, you do not need a diagnosis or specific condition. You can discuss grief, relationship concerns, stress, or life changes and ask for general feedback. A Trinidad licensed clinical social worker may help you gain power over your life and emotions while you navigate day-to-day experiences.

Gaining a new perspective on yourself through various therapies might allow you to improve your self-esteem, work through relationships, and gain a better sense of your mental health goals. The success you may find with a Trinidad counselor can be dependent on your process.

People may also attend therapy for specific motives, such as bullying, an autism diagnosis, a desire to learn mindfulness meditation, personality concerns, trouble with office workers, specific phobias, and many other principles that a counselor can help with.

Is mental health care and therapy with a therapist worth it?

Therapy with a licensed counselor is effective and has the power to change individuals' lives. Each client is at a different stage of their emotional healing journey in life, as each human can be unique in their personality, expression, skills, and goals. An experienced clinician can target various symptoms, experiences, and personalities to help you feel your best and put you on the path to healing. Unlike advice from a friend, family, or non-professional, a mental health therapist has an understanding of various disorders like ADHD and depression with many hours of experience in treating adults in their practice. For this reason, seeing an evidence based licensed clinician in Trinidad, Colorado can be worth it. Over 41 million adults in the US attend therapy services each year, showing it's a popular option and is proven to be effective.

Trinidad has many clinicians who practice person or client-centered individual therapy in-person and through online sessions to assist clients in their healing journey. If you opt into online therapy, you might also be able to meet with providers all over the United States and change easily at any time. Many people struggling with anxiety and depression, substance abuse, body image issues, and more find therapists that are a good fit for them, feel supported, and gain further insight into their lives through internet-based therapy.

Do therapists judge you in therapy sessions during telehealth appointments?

The boundaries between you and a therapist are in place to help you and them regarding ethical concerns. Mental health professionals are held by ethical standards through the American Psychological Association (APA) and are not allowed to judge or harm their clients. If you are concerned about sharing details about yourself, feel free to withhold personal information. Their job in the therapeutic relationship is to create a safe place, help you gain a deeper understanding of your mental health, and support you. You might consider changing counselors if you don't feel safe or respected.
