Hello and welcome - I appreciate your visit to my page! I see counseling as a collaboration between client and counselor - clients want to feel their best and function at full potential, and my role is to provide quality, customized care to help them do that. I am a big believer that even small changes can significantly impact internal well-being and external influence. I partner with clients to identify and build on strengths so they can face challenges, create solutions, and feel better. Licensed in Illinois and Connecticut for 20 years, I have worked as counselor, consultant, coach, and advisor in both higher education and private practice. Much of my work has been with clients transitioning from one life phase or role to another. Change can be hard, and people who ask for help as they face it are brave. With an approach specific to each individual, consisting of a personalized set of strategies drawn largely from humanistic, cognitive, acceptance and commitment, and solution focused therapies, I support and encourage clients as they work to adjust to new roles, situations, expectations, and realities and help them cope with the resulting symptoms and feelings. It is a privilege to help clients work through a difficult time as they progress through life’s inevitable changes, and I would be honored to work with you!

Counseling is a process of working through issues that are interfering with you living a full life. In the process of doing this, there is a tremendous level of growth on many levels: emotional, relational, spiritual, existential, even physical. Counseling may at times address very difficult situations, including addressing difficult or painful experiences from your developmental years which are currently impacting you and your relationships. As a Master’s-level Licensed Professional Counselor in Connecticut, I work with my clients to explore the factors which have led them to pursue counseling: we collaborate to determine our priorities. Recognizing that real change requires more than an hour per week, clients may be assigned homework to complete between sessions, or may be encouraged to read an article or book on a particular subject pertaining to the issues being addressed; we will discuss the homework at the next session as well as suggestions for applying the material to your life. I won’t sugar-coat it: changing how you respond to people or other triggers takes real work and a willingness to change. Areas in which I specialize include Anxiety and Depression; Loss, Bereavement, and Grief; Marital and Parenting Issues; and Asperger’s/High-Functioning Autism. I am also experienced in working with clients who have issues with Anger Management, Life Changes (Chronic Illness, Aging Issues, Employment or Economic Changes), Communication and Conflict Resolution (including Couples Counseling), Asperger Syndrome/High-Functioning Autism, Equipping Parents to work effectively with their children with AS/HFA, Trauma-Informed Counseling, Family-of-Origin issues, Blended Families, and Home Schooling Families. My approach to counseling is “eclectic,” meaning that I approach different issues in different ways. Approaches that I draw upon include Attachment-Based Therapy, Client-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Existential Therapy, Gottman Method, Mindfulness Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Narrative Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Trauma-Focused Therapy. I am very comfortable working with those who have strong ties to their faith and/or ethnic/cultural background. I have been told that I approach my counseling almost more as a marriage and family therapist, as I view clients not as isolated entities, but as people who are influenced strongly by their families and others around them, and who in turn influence those very individuals as well. As an undergraduate I graduated with my A.A. from a community college in southern California with high academic honors. Then I transferred to the University of Southern California, with a double major in Communication Theory and Public Relations. My B.A was earned with highest academic honors (summa cum laude), and I was inducted into the academic honor societies Phi Beta Kappa (liberal arts and sciences) and Phi Kappa Phi (all-university). I completed my M.A. in Professional Counseling at Liberty University with high academic honors. In addition to being licensed by the state of Connecticut, I am also a Nationally Certified Counselor. A member of the American Counseling Association and the American Association of Christian Counselors, my mission as a Licensed Professional Counselor is to treat each client with respect, to walk alongside as you work through issues that are troubling you, and to be a part of the process of healing and reconciliation. I look forward to working with you!

Colin Christman
My name is Colin Christman, and I am licensed in Connecticut as an LCSW. I completed my undergraduate education at Yale University in Political Science and Applied Mathematics. I completed my graduate education at the University of Connecticut. The bulk of my prior work experience is in intensive care settings (largely inpatient or residential) for severe issues in behavioral health (substance use disorders, self-harm, suicidality, complex trauma, eating disorders, and other behavioral health problems such as gambling disorder, sex addiction, compulsive dishonesty, and kleptomania). I have significant experience working with co-occurring trauma, behavioral health disorders, personality disorders, and mood or anxiety disorders. Given the complex, florid, and grave nature of many of these disorders, I have experience working within a family context with partners, parents, children, and siblings. For whom it may be interesting, I have training in Internal Family Systems (IFS) and trauma-specific interventions. I would describe my overall therapeutic approach as psychodynamic, and most consistent with the ideas of Alfred Adler and Eric Berne. At times we may be joined by Emma, a certified emotional support dog. I believe that most mental illnesses are diseases of absence, not diseases of presence. If you imagine influenza, it's a disease of presence. There's a bad thing present (the viral infection) that produces disease. By contrast, scurvy is a disease of absence. Lacking vitamin C for a prolonged period, the body cannot maintain healthy function. I believe the role of therapy is to identify what's missing in terms of emotional nutrition (safety, interpersonal connection, a sense of identity, a sense of community, a sense of purpose, a sense of capability, and structure are core examples, though there are others and biomedical possibilities as well). From there, our goal is to determine why those psychological needs are persistently unmet, and how those unmet needs motivate self-destructive or maladaptive patterns in your life. Often in psychology we discuss cognition and emotion (thoughts and feelings). In truth, thoughts and feelings are only the mechanism by which the brain turns its understanding of what's happening into a behavioral response. Our goal is to use those thoughts and feelings, in the context of your life, to discover underlying beliefs that produce too much negative emotion, too little positive emotion, or behavior that isn't consistent with your values, your goals, or your wellbeing. But where we start is a lot simpler: Who are you? What matters to you? What's wrong in your life, and what would it mean for things to be right? We're all in the process of trying to become a better version of ourselves. Therapy is the process of challenging and changing beliefs to progress toward a better relationship with others and, most importantly, ourselves.

I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor with a Masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I have worked with clients with a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, personality disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and parenting problems . I am also trained to work with people who have experienced physical trauma or emotional abuse. My therapy style is consent based and tailored to your particular needs. I believe in treating everyone with respect, sensitivity, and compassion, and I don't believe in stigmatizing labels. My approach combines cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic and somatic therapy. Your symptoms of anxiety, depression, and anger are your body's way of telling you something's not right! As a child, you may have experienced some sort of failure in your relationships or environment. These failures may have caused you to compensate by creating strategies to survive. Maybe you consider yourself a perfectionist, or maybe you find that you give more than you receive, or perhaps you just feel disconnected from yourself and everyone around you? The pain you are experiencing is real, and coping with it just isn't working anymore. You're not alone! If you are looking to feel connected and alive again, I offer a heartfelt approach to truly understanding what your core dilemma is, and guide you towards healing your emotional wounds. Looking forward to working with you!
