From the first moment of successfully leaving our mother's body and beginning to breath on our own, we began a life journey that mirrors our own epic story. This epic is similar to those I used to watch as a child at the Sunday evening movies. Usually a hero, for instance, Hercules, would be engaged in ongoing event-filled days of danger, challenge, and conquest. Along the way there were characters who attempted to thwart his efforts or support his quest. His focus remained resolute and steadfast and was usually met with success. If not doing that hour definitely by part two he would be the victor. Our life challenges, however, are not usually met with the excitement of a movie; and success in overcoming them is not usually with one or even two hours. But like old movies, our challenges involve obstacles, dangers, wonders, and successes of varying dimensions. These challenges for many of us serve to push us forward to take another breath of life and to continue our personal life walk. From each push, breath, and challenge we can choose to learn and experience success or satisfaction with how we are engaging with life. I am Joy Smith McElveen, a licensed clinical social worker in New Orleans, LA.. Like many of you, my epic story is filled with many challenges of major life disappointments, frustrations, illness, fears, anxiety, depression, and anger. However, there was always a sense of wonder which generated happy times, love, and a glimmer of hope-filled days. Focusing on the wonders of hope helps me put challenges and obstacles into a perspective that allows me build change efforts. I think it is having a sense of hope, the real wonder, that pushes us forward despite the challenge. My practice is based on expanding a search for hope within each person seeking to change direction. Living demands that we must continue to grow. We grow through learning and making changes in our sphere of life. Our emotions and thoughts help or hinder our behavior. It is within these areas we need to evaluate, and search for meaning to be productive and fulfilled. My practice is based on using Dialectical Behavior Therapy undergirded with applications from Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Solution-Focused Therapy. These approaches have interconnections with how we can choose to change how we think, feel and behave. They each require that the person seeking to make changes do the work and the helper is alongside working with her/him. I would like to be one of the characters in your epic story who supports your quest for change. I have a BA in sociology from Louisiana State University (now UNO); a Master of Social Work from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor); and a doctorate from Howard University School of Social Work. I have certifications in each treatment approach listed above.

As a mental health counselor, I believe in the utmost dignity and worth of an individual. My primary responsibility is to continually increase my knowledge of human behavior with the intent of fully understanding my clients so that I can always serve in their best interests. I'm a Clinical Mental Health Counselor licensed in Georgia with over 7 years of working within Grief and Loss, Unhealthy Relationships, Depression, Trauma Based and Spirituality counseling. My previous career experience includes working within Suicide Prevention, Wellness Coaching and Family Readiness for Civilian and Government organizations. I worked in Mental Health with Military Families Overseas and Veterans via the Crisis Line. My practicum and internship were within community and individual emergency response planning for a local Non Profit Organization. In addition to this, I served on their domestic violence and sexual abuse response teams in 3 different state counties. My counseling sessions are intricately designed to assist one with positive behavioral change by developing one’s self within multiple levels; spiritual, emotional, intellectual, interpersonal, social, economic, and physical. As a mental health counselor, I do not condone or engage in any discrimination based on age, color, culture, disability, ethnic group, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, marital status or socioeconomic status. I will actively attempt to understand any diverse cultural backgrounds of the clients with whom I work. When there is a conflict between your goals, identity and/or values and those of the mine, a referral to another provider may be placed so that I can ensure that your best interests are being provided for. Change is hard and continuous, therefore if at any time you feel uncomfortable, or dissatisfied with the current treatment or technique, please readily and consistently confide within me. While pursuing ongoing mental health educational opportunities and services, I make every reasonable effort to protect the welfare of my clients. Counseling is a mutual effort, with both parties devotedly learning from one another. You have the freedom to choose whether to enter into this counseling relationship, decline treatment and treatment options or to withdraw from my counseling services at any time. I don't use just one therapeutic technique. It's my belief that there are 7.6 billion people in the world; To use one approach on multiple people would hinder a person's opportunity to foster growth. Therefore, some of my most common approaches include but are not limited to CBT, Schema therapy, Trauma Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Positive Psychology, Energy Psychology, Solutions Focused Therapy, Mindfulness, DBT and Reality Therapy, Existential Therapy and Gestalt Therapy. Counseling requires a very active effort on your part. For therapy to be more successful, it is important for you to work on things you and I talk about both during and between session. This session is about you, utterly and completely. As with such, we can’t be friends and must keep our relationship strictly professional. This is to offer you the best care, and so that I can provide judgment that is unselfish and purely focused on your needs. If at any time you feel I’m not performing in an ethical or professional manger, I ask that you please let me know immediately. Counseling sessions may entail assignments that include physical activity. If you have any medical conditions, or physical limitations, if you have any concerns about your ability to exercise, if you are currently pregnant or are over the age of 69, you should consult your medical healthcare provider before undergoing counseling services. Your role includes sharing accurate medical and contact information with me and letting me know if any information changes. I look forward to helping you on your path to positivity and wellness. Please call 24 hours in advance if you need to reschedule your appointment. Thank you. I look forward to working with your on your path to wellness.
