I have been a practicing therapist since 1994 and have specializations in: Pastoral Counseling; Women's issues including Aging, Body Image, Rape, Domestic Violence and Incest; Depression, Loss, Grief and Anxiety; Couples Counseling; Serious Mental Illness issues with individuals or families concerning Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, and other illnesses that often require long-term treatment and medications. I have a Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling from Nova Southeastern University, FL, and a Master's degree in Divinity from Duke University , NC. I believe that trust and compassion are key elements to successful therapy, as is regular engagement in therapy sessions, and commitment from both the therapist and the client. I often teach my clients techniques in breathing, using imagery, and journaling to use on their own when they have to confront issues that we work on in therapy. My style of counseling involves practices based in many psychological theories, and is tailored to the individual with whom I am working. Our sessions consist of conversations that may involve problem solving, teaching, guiding, looking more closely at issues that have been causing trouble for a long time, things that may never have been spoken of before, uncomfortable topics - whatever a client comes with is where we start, and together we will go from there. I am not here to judge, or come to conclusions about what you do or who you are. I am here to help you through whatever it is that causes you to want to talk to a professional therapist, and I will work with you as long as you need to heal and/or reach your goal(s).

CONGRATULATIONS on this accomplishment. My belief is that each of us possess the inner strength and persistence in finding what works best in our world. I believe that my own personal challenges have led me to a journey that embraces both a spiritual balance and an emotionally intelligent professional. I earned my doctorate degree in Psychology with an emphasis in couple’s and family therapy. My belief is that to understand a person, I must also know where person comes from. This allow me to see the entire person instead of looking at a singular part of you. Therefore, I look forward to working together with you. My approach to therapy is to work collaboratively with you to give a difference of opinion to things that are causing you pain, and to then work together to find ways that will help you feel better. In my practice I use different interventions depending on what works best including emotionally focused therapy- informed, dialectical behavioral therapy - informed, solution focused, narrative, attachment based, and existential therapy. Since I was very young, I have known that I wanted to grow up to help others. As early as high school, I was enrolling in psychology courses to familiarize myself with the study of people, how they develop, and how they interact with themselves and others. After high school, I attended Emory University in Atlanta, GA and graduated with a B.A. in psychology. Using this degree, I was able to work at a crisis call center, as well as an inpatient mental health treatment facility helping people who were in distress and not functioning well in their life. After a couple of years, I realized I would need further education and specialization to be able to help others more effectively. This realization led me to Indiana State University where I graduated with my Masters degree, and subsequently, my Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology. Throughout the 16+ years since I earned those credentials, I’ve been fortunate to work in a variety of settings while helping a diverse group of individuals feel comforted and supported while learning skills to improve their daily life. I spent my internship and several post-doctoral years working within U.S. Veterans’ Administration Hospitals, where I had the opportunity to help veterans and their families work through various issues including chronic pain, community re-assimilation, sleep disorders, depression, anxiety, and whatever may have been important to them. Additionally, over the years, I have provided therapy through community mental health centers, Hospice services, and rehabilitative/long-term nursing centers. Most recently, I have enjoyed working in preschools with teachers, as well as families of young children to assist with classroom and home-life success, and early-intervention special services. Through all of these experiences, I have found that in most situations, committed individuals can learn to improve their lives simply by having someone that listens sincerely and helps them to evaluate their thoughts/behavior, enhance communication skills, and learn coping strategies. I truly believe the experiences I have had, both personally and professionally, have led me to be the helpful, caring and capable therapist that I dreamed of being when I was a young girl. I strive to meet individuals wherever they may be and work alongside them to identify goals and help them learn skills that can improve their overall experience of life in a meaningful way. I am a steadfast believer that therapy is most effective when it is rooted in a strong, trusting, and open client-therapist relationship, focused on issues that are most relevant in daily life, and conducted at a pace that is comfortable for the client. If you feel that these qualities align with your situation, please don’t hesitate a minute more... contact me. I’m here to help.

"There can be no transforming of darkness into light ... without emotion." -Jung Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the core of my training. It embraces the belief systems of the past that affect your present. It's a state-of-mind that defines thinking that affects emotional awareness. To become aware is not to change, but to understand and accept. Carrying guilt or shame of the past, triggers the conflict of now. I don't offer advice - I offer choices - a chance to choose your own method of healing that fits you - not something others feel 'should' be. Come. Sit. Talk. Let's wander your path together. I am specialized/certified in trauma, addictions, and adolescent disorders (Behavioral and ADHD). I use an integrated approach incorporating rational emotive behavioral therapy, reality theory, psychodynamic, and person centered. I offer members of KY, SC, FL, AZ, DC, and OH communities a Conservative choice for a new clinical perspective. With over 21 years of experience, change is merely a button away.

Some simply don't feel the need to see a psychologist. However, some people may avoid attending therapy due to stigma or preconceived notions of what it might entail. Although psychologists often support people with mental health conditions, you do not need a diagnosis or specific condition. You can discuss grief, relationship concerns, stress, or life changes and ask for general feedback. Is mental health care and therapy with a therapist worth it?
Therapy with a licensed counselor is effective and has the power to change individuals' lives. Each client is at a different stage of their emotional healing journey in life, as each human can be unique in their personality, expression, skills, and goals. A psychologist can target various symptoms, experiences, and personalities to help you feel your best and put you on the path to healing. Do therapists judge you in therapy sessions during telehealth appointments?
The boundaries between you and a therapist are in place to help you and them regarding ethical concerns. Mental health professionals are held by ethical standards through the American Psychological Association (APA) and are not allowed to judge or harm their clients. If you are concerned about sharing details about yourself, feel free to withhold personal information. Their job in the therapeutic relationship is to create a safe place, help you gain a deeper understanding of your mental health, and support you. You might consider changing counselors if you don't feel safe or respected.
