You have just taken your first step towards a happier life! I believe counseling is a sign of strength and shows that you are ready to make positive changes to fully benefit your mental growth and wellbeing. While you may still be anxious, possibly depressed, you now know that you actually have the strength to embark on the path of healing and growth. Should you be here out of concern for a loved one, your child, or your relationship with someone, your concern and willingness to take action can be a first step in healing for both of you. We all have the innate desire and ability to heal ourselves. Professional counseling can significantly accelerate this growth! Maybe I can help. Let me introduce myself: My name is Susan Sogar, LMHC, NCC and I am a licensed mental health counselor in Florida. I graduated from the University of North Texas in 2015. I am a nationally certified counselor and trained in EMDR. My philosophy is based on the belief that we need an environment of support, understanding, and unconditional acceptance in order to heal and grow. Therefore, my first focus in counseling is to develop a relationship of trust and understanding. My second focal point is on identifying your strengths, some of which you may not even have discovered. Third, my focus is pragmatic and positive. I will help you identify practical, positive solutions for the future. As an “expat” from Germany who has also lived in a number of other countries abroad for many years, I deeply honor the cultural and spiritual identity of my clients. I have counseled clients from many different religious and cultural backgrounds and therefore appreciate all political, religious or even philosophical convictions as valid attempts to find meaning in life. You may still have a lot of questions before you're ready to move on to the next step. Why not pick up the phone? I am here for you now.

Since I was very young, I have known that I wanted to grow up to help others. As early as high school, I was enrolling in psychology courses to familiarize myself with the study of people, how they develop, and how they interact with themselves and others. After high school, I attended Emory University in Atlanta, GA and graduated with a B.A. in psychology. Using this degree, I was able to work at a crisis call center, as well as an inpatient mental health treatment facility helping people who were in distress and not functioning well in their life. After a couple of years, I realized I would need further education and specialization to be able to help others more effectively. This realization led me to Indiana State University where I graduated with my Masters degree, and subsequently, my Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology. Throughout the 16+ years since I earned those credentials, I’ve been fortunate to work in a variety of settings while helping a diverse group of individuals feel comforted and supported while learning skills to improve their daily life. I spent my internship and several post-doctoral years working within U.S. Veterans’ Administration Hospitals, where I had the opportunity to help veterans and their families work through various issues including chronic pain, community re-assimilation, sleep disorders, depression, anxiety, and whatever may have been important to them. Additionally, over the years, I have provided therapy through community mental health centers, Hospice services, and rehabilitative/long-term nursing centers. Most recently, I have enjoyed working in preschools with teachers, as well as families of young children to assist with classroom and home-life success, and early-intervention special services. Through all of these experiences, I have found that in most situations, committed individuals can learn to improve their lives simply by having someone that listens sincerely and helps them to evaluate their thoughts/behavior, enhance communication skills, and learn coping strategies. I truly believe the experiences I have had, both personally and professionally, have led me to be the helpful, caring and capable therapist that I dreamed of being when I was a young girl. I strive to meet individuals wherever they may be and work alongside them to identify goals and help them learn skills that can improve their overall experience of life in a meaningful way. I am a steadfast believer that therapy is most effective when it is rooted in a strong, trusting, and open client-therapist relationship, focused on issues that are most relevant in daily life, and conducted at a pace that is comfortable for the client. If you feel that these qualities align with your situation, please don’t hesitate a minute more... contact me. I’m here to help.

OVERWHELMED! I don’t know how much more of this I can take. I get it. I already think you are pretty awesome to seek assistance. So, let’s get to work. Perhaps you are feeling hopeless from depression, over-the-edge from anxiety, inattentive because of ADHD, quick-to-click from anger, a salad bowl of feelings from grief, substance use that leads to relationship or legal troubles, or memory from trauma. I am a Master’s level, Licensed Mental Health Counselor and a National Certified Counselor in Florida. My experience has included working with adults in a private practice setting since September 2015. My approach is to offer clients the support, acceptance, insight, and guidance needed to achieve your desired level of functioning. Treatment approaches used are Somatic Theory, Interpersonal Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral (CBT), Mindfulness-Based (MBCT), Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), Person-Centered, Solution Focused Brief (SFBT), and Trauma-Focused CBT. Other Important Information: My observance is that as people are becoming busier and some are having to adjust to new daily routines, scheduling can become a problem. That, and the higher demand for therapist is why I am making this announcement on how to cancel an appointment and on my “no show”/cancellation policy. (This policy does not count if I am the one making the cancellation, and I will not cancel you with out giving you notice, or helping to reschedule you). BetterHelp makes it seem easy to cancel an appointment (or even change counselors) Simply click on Cancel or change therapist. However, this is a gentle reminder for those who may not be aware that it is customary to let your therapist know when you can not make an appointment, (or that you wish to change therapists). Additionally, if something comes up and you do need to cancel it is important to give 24 hours notice; this allows others the possibility of using that appointment time (this is critical now that more people are ready and waiting for appointments). Cancellations within 24 hours of a session are considered “no shows”. You are allowed one no show, after that BetterHelp may charge you for a session. After the second “no show” I will limit sessions to messaging rather than scheduled live appointments. I know this policy can be a challenge, and part of therapy is stretching you. Not all of BetterHelp’s counselors have the same policies, and while I prefer to continue working with all my clients, it is ok if you decide to choose a different therapist. Additionally, I encourage you to message me before changing therapist (for any reason) I can assist you in finding a new therapist. And it is helpful to follow up with you on your experiences with me in therapy.
