Hello! If you're reading this, you may be experiencing an array of different feelings and emotions. Maybe you have found yourself in a mood you cannot describe, feelings you do not know how to express, and with behaviors you cannot explain. Maybe you have found yourself at a loss for words when some asks you, "What is wrong?" or "Why are you acting this way?" Maybe that someone asking is...yourself. So, here you are, exploring Better Help with the hope to find someone that you connect with, that may be able to listen, understand, and give you the help you are searching for to navigate some of life's challenges that have been thrown your way. A good relationship between you and your therapist is needed for you to achieve the changes you wish to see and the meet the goals you set. I'd like to give you a little information about myself to help you decide if my experiences and therapy style make me that person for you. I am a licensed clinical social worker in the state of Kentucky where I have been working in the social work field for the last 10 years, providing individual and group therapy, mentorship, and advocacy to adults and children. In my time providing services I have worked with people from all walks of life struggling with a wide variety of challenges. Much of my experience has been helping those with complaints of; depression, anxiety, insomnia, trauma, substance abuse, grief, and problems with poor self-esteem/self-worth. My therapy style is warm, empathic, empowering, and patient specific. I best describe my therapeutic approach as a combination of behavioral and psychodynamic. I recognize there are situations that a short-term approach is needed and times when a long-term approach may be best. With that in mind some types that may be used are; cognitive-behavioral, person-centered, humanistic, interpersonal psychotherapy, and rational-emotive therapy. Your treatment is exactly that, "your treatment" and together we will tailor the treatment to fit your specific needs. I understand that asking for help and committing to making a change is not easy to do. However, I came across a quote years ago that stuck with me and I repeat to myself, and others, often; "If you are ready to change, you will find a way....if not, you will find an excuse." If today is the day you decide you are ready and want to begin down a new path in this thing called life, just know I am here. I look forward to working with you!

Hi! My name is Russell or Rusty or Russ, whichever you prefer. My approach is casual, but also rooted in science. Like an astronaut might say they “always knew they wanted to be an astronaut”, I’ve always known I wanted to be a therapist. I’ve studied the more interesting psychological treatment approaches, like humanistic theory, motivational and mindfulness based approaches, but graduated from a rigorous Psychology program rooted in the science of Cognitive Behavioral Theory. My Master's degree is a Master’s of Science in Social Work. I believe that there’s a framework that fits everyone and every problem, but that good outcomes are rooted in a good therapeutic rapport as well as an approach that actually works. Let’s let your challenges guide our treatment approach, I’m here to listen and help you solve! As a mental health professional, I have devoted much of my life to working in the service of others. Whether that was “counseling” a dying 25-year-old man by wheeling him downstairs from the sixth floor of the hospice inpatient unit, where I worked and he was a patient, so that he could watch the annual Kentucky Derby Pegasus Parade; for a few minutes, he was able to forget he was dying, as he sang Dancing Queen and danced with his arms while the ABBA float coasted by. Or whether that was advocating for a student with autism spectrum disorder and ADHD, and a very superior I.Q. score, with obtaining accommodations and financial aid to go to engineering school. Or whether that was helping clients absorb and integrate the loss of a relationship, a meaningful job, or their physical health. These experiences have shaped who I am today, both personally and professionally. I often ponder on the fragility of things in the context of impermanence. And I often ponder on the astounding fact that we even exist on this tiny planet in this too-massive-to comprehend universe. But I also ground those existential ponderings in a knowledge base that fulfills the licensure demands of a mental health professional. My imagination was captured by my first psychology textbook when I was in college back in the 1980s, and I continue reading psychology books for both professional and personal development. I actually read the DSM-5 (the manual of psychological diagnoses) in my leisure time, and I was downright giddy when the text revision came out. (I also like gardening, playing the piano, and making sourdough bread. And I deeply love my partner of 22 years and my dog Ruby.) I am schooled in various therapy approaches, with leanings toward the humanistic, existential, contemplative, and cognitive behavioral, and I have acquired a toolbox of skill sets to share with clients so they may experiment and decide what works best for them. My hope for you is that you have a helpful and meaningful experience with a therapist. My own experience in therapy involved a lot of hard work and grit, but each step in the right direction invigorated me, and little by little, a little became a lot. Before therapy, I saw the world almost exclusively through an anxious lens, but therapy gave me the chance to reframe my life minus the distortion. I view therapy as the endeavor of two people creating a safe space to identify those thoughts, feelings, and emotions that otherwise may be too disorienting or too frightening to do on one’s own, and then learning the skills conducive to a more compassionate and supportive inner dialog. I often ask my clients with a harsh inner critic if they would talk to another person the way they talk to themselves, and the answer is usually a tearful no. With some courage and the guidance of a therapist, this tearful no can be the start of a more authentic and meaningful life. If my approach resonates with you and you’d like to schedule a session, please take a look at my appointment calendar and see if the posted openings fit your schedule. If you do not see a time posted that works for you, let me know what does fit your schedule, and I will do my best to accommodate. Also know, I usually like to devote the first session to a modified clinical interview, to help me know where you’ve been and where you want to go. If you have any additional questions or concerns that you’d like to address before you schedule a session, feel free to reach out. In the meantime, please be gentle with yourself!

Hello there. I am a licensed clinical social worker. My professional and life experience is in Kentucky where I was born and raised. I have been providing therapy and supportive counseling to people for nearly forty years. I started with children, adolescents, and their families. Most recently I had the privilege of working with our Veterans. In most cases we addressed depression and suicidality. But it is best when we can start before that stage. It is best to ask for some help when you first notice something is just not right. Something is off. It is my pleasure to work with people as they work to get things back on track. My style is open, encouraging, interactive and hopeful. While I am laid back, I am also respectfully straight forward and expect you to be also. We must communicate and cooperate to make changes. I appreciate the ability to provide services online, however I do not accept clients who want to text only. I personally need to see you or at the least hear you. I do look forward to talking with you.
