I have worked with clients in various community mental health settings with problems ranging from situational life stress to severe mental illness. Some special interests include: PTSD and trauma related disorders, anxiety disorders, life transitions, parenting issues, existential issues, couples counseling and personality disorders. I have also completed multiple research projects focusing on anxiety and the efficacy of different treatment modalities. I possess the skills, expertise and compassion to help individuals with a wide range of issues or concerns. I take a person-centered approach, where I work on building a strong therapeutic relationship with each client in order to help them reach their greatest potential and work towards reaching their goals. I believe that connection and relationship are the two foundations to personal growth. The strength of the relationship is based on my ability to maintain a non-judgmental, trusting and validating environment for the client while encouraging growth. My techniques include an integrative approach, combining multiple techniques, with an emphasis on Mindfulness-based techniques and DBT skills.

"Empathy is a relationship between equals." -Paolo Freire Human behavior when placed in context yet has ripples; however, too has quiet the flow, beauty, and reason to it. The behaviors manifest sometimes merely for the chronic quest of hanging on to survive, staying attached to that one person, or perhaps adopting humor to make others smile. The science of human attachment has interested me since I could remember. Attaching to folks around us, to ourselves, and to the world at large, is a profound process / journey that shapes multiple entities of our internal world. My undergraduate careers were based on the neuro make-up of *how* we actually feel emotions and bodily sensations through the nervous systems. After receiving my master's degree, I served folks 5-years old to end-of-life in settings of community mental health, juvenile detention centers, therapeutic foster care, private practice, geriatric wellness-assisted living facilities, medical social worker, and insurance contracted therapist. Before becoming a licensed clinical social worker, I served 14-years in the U.S. Army in various entities to include active duty, reserves, and the national guard to which I then went to serve as a contractor with the U.S. Navy. Often times, my therapy style has been described as integrative, analytical, yet simple. Discovering the "roots" or "drivers" of behavior(s) is the analysis part of which I really love doing. I wholeheartedly believe in an environment of free expression, essentially feeling like you are "vibing" with your therapist, so please be authentic. Giving you time and attention is my goal while effectively inviting you to think/do therapeutic considerations (I never offer advice, only "invitations"--due to mindful practice and you being the expert of your mind & body). I am trained in various models, approaches, concepts and I try to utilize as many as I can in each session when appropriate to effectively assist where I can. That said, I am one that does use a "here and then" (present & past) approach to treatment to assist with managing symptoms. Further, I authentically try to balance sensitivity (handling folks with care) while then assisting with growth. Undergoing therapy is not always an easy ride, there might be sessions where uncomfortable thoughts/feelings arise. With such, please know that it is my job to never leave you in an "emotional uneasy" place. Your job is to communicate those thoughts/feelings to me--even if it's in one sentence when those uneasy times come so I know. As posted by BetterHelp, this is not a mental health crisis service. This chat portal will not be monitored for crises. For mental health crises, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. Please ask any question(s) you might have about this policy before starting services.

I encourage you to be proud of yourself for simply exploring therapy as an option to enhance your wellness.  I have worked as a therapist since 2015 and in the mental health field since 2009. I am a licensed psychologist and therapist with over 25 years of clinical experience. As a PhD clinical psychologist, I have a comprehensive education in mental health and ongoing relevant training. For those exploring therapy for the first time -- welcome! For others, welcome back! Therapy involves talking honestly about yourself in private. Some thoughts or feelings you may have been kept to yourself — maybe for a long time. But in sharing your ‘inner-self’, your burden lightens a bit. Together, we can begin to understand your life better. Your life can move forward. It can regains its meaning. You can begin to build a life worth living. For some clients, the approach is more educational. You may learn new skills. Therapy is not always deeply exploring your past, but I will always ask about your past and upbringing. Each client is different. My therapy approach can differ too. Therapy sessions typically last a little less than an hour. I prefer to meet in video sessions. I find that meeting every week maintains continuity and momentum. We can message each other between sessions through the BetterHelp platform. Online therapy is as effective as traditional therapy. It can provide easier and more private access to a therapist and more flexible scheduling. However, while BetterHelp usually costs less than some others therapies, it is still not cheap. Is it worth it? I suggest you try a few sessions (maybe 2-3) and then decide. You may decide that the longer term cost over, say, 3 months or even longer is simply too much. But as with anything involving money, you should understand the details of your agreement. The introductory offers can differ situation to situation. I am not involved with this aspect of the program and will refer you to others within BH who handle that. Finally, therapy is not a quick fix. It is not easy. Making lasting life change may take several months — or for a few, many months. But I won't push for more sessions than necessary. My goal is for you to lead a life without therapy. We will not attempt to fix everything, but I think that together we can make many things better.
