Hi, thanks for taking some time to get to know me. I am Dr. Scott Butler. I am licensed in Louisiana and Arkansas as a Licensed Professional Counselor. I earned a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from LSU and a Master’s and Ph.D. in mental health counseling from the University of New Orleans. I've been offering counseling for over 30 years. I was married for 30 years and have three daughters; one is an attorney, one is a licensed professional counselor, working on her Ph.D. and my youngest is a junior in college. I have worked in many different mental health settings including hospitals, crisis intervention hotlines, non-profit organizations, as a preferred provider for local and state agencies and over 20 years in adoption and foster care work. I have been deemed an expert witness in criminal and civil cases and have authored one novel, king cake baby. I use a cognitive-behavioral theoretical approach to counseling which is a goal-oriented treatment that takes a hands-on, practical approach to problem-solving. I generally do 45 minute sessions. If interested in working with me, please provide your full name and an emergency contact name and number as this is required to facilitate professional counseling. Life can be difficult, right? Sometimes, despite our best intentions, we simply need someone to help guide us to a better place. I am a trained listener. I take in the information you provide and turn it back to you in a step by step approach to help you move beyond what brought you to me. Beginning this process with the right counselor helps you get better, faster. I hope to be that counselor.

I bring a warm and empathic style to my work, thus creating a space in which you, the client, can discuss the challenges you face while feeling heard, understood, and supported. I help people do more of what matters even in the presence of difficult inner experiences. In our work together, we’ll look at the strategies you have been using to address your challenges, and we’ll discuss ways in which you can strengthen or expand your skills in order to act more effectively and flexibly in response to difficult situations, thoughts, and feelings. The heart of my work involves helping you to learn new skills which allow you to break the grip of unwanted thoughts & feelings on your actions and your life. As you build these skills, you learn to handle difficult thoughts, feelings, and situations more flexibly, thus opening a space where you become freer to show up to your life in ways that enhance vitality, meaning, and purpose.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker practicing in Louisiana since 2012. I am a friendly person from a rural area with a positive attitude. My focus is on individual counseling, tackling issues including depression, anxiety, attention issues, relationship problems, communication breakdown, and even parenting struggles. As a counselor my first goal is to build rapport with each client, to work to understand the individual along with their strengths. I utilize cognitive behavior therapy, strengths perspective, and solutions focused counseling. As we focus on the root of the problem that brought the client to counseling as well as identify triggers that cause symptoms to worsen. The goal of each counseling relationship is for the individual to learn coping skills and develop confidence in addressing triggers and ultimately the root cause of the problem. It is truly an honor to be allowed into an individual’s life during a vulnerable time. I sincerely respect anyone who has made the decision to reach out to improve their mental health and would be honored to walk with you through this journey. I have a Gerontology Certificate which makes the older adult population a specialty and I have completed research regarding caring for individual with Alzheimer’s disease. For five years I worked to provide support and education to individuals with any form of dementia as well as their caregivers and healthcare professionals. I then spent two years as a medical social worker in a rural area as I worked to connect individuals with resources as well support individuals through the aging process. Now, I am devoted to individual counseling and meeting the personal needs of each client.
