I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Louisiana. I have worked with an array of populations, individuals, groups, settings, and athletic teams. I interned at both University Medical Center in New Orleans and the Thomas E. Chambers Counseling and Training Center. I graduated from University of Holy Cross with a MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Being a counselor has given me the incredible opportunity to have conversations with so many unique people, essentially, counseling is just another conversation. I specialize in working with athletes, coaches, and individuals who experience anxiety, depression, have performance issues, men's issues, and work-related stress. Before we really jump right into things, I first want to state that it takes an incredible amount of courage for a person to ask for help; so, I want to commend you for taking this step for yourself. If this is your first time utilizing therapy, especially on a platform like this, please note that I am here for you. Basically, during our session(s), I will reflect back information which you provide to me through in a summarizing form, I ask questions to clarify things, and I will attempt to provide avenues for which solutions may become visible. Also, this is your time, if anything is confusing please let me know. Whenever you're ready, and if you think we would be a good fit, let's jump in.

Thank you very much for checking here: I hope to be of service to you. My 15+ years of experience includes many years of counseling and listening, across various cultures, ages and personal client needs, with a few years as adjunct professor at Louisiana State University, Shreveport, LA: 3 years of work as a patient counselor in a hospital psychiatric unit, and 3 years of practice in a pediatric clinic. My current solo practice is empathetic, accepting and non-judgmental, having also practiced as an EAP (employee counselor) in a very large hospital and city system, in which I was required to see anyone for any situation or issue they may bring to counseling. This unique opportunity provided me with insights and understanding of people beyond my own personal scope of experience. I believe this has made me more sensitive to the needs, hurts and stress of the various clients I serve. I am generally available 7 days a week for appointments, because I really do enjoy my practice and my clients. I am old enough to enjoy my 6 children, 14 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild, together with my wife in a delightful sharing relationship. This creates a relaxed, accepting and strong relationship and family foundation for your counseling needs. My personal strengths hopefully convey to you a caring and positive mindset as we work together. Hope to hear from you soon!

Maria Sands
My name is Maria Sands. I hold a Masters Degree in Social Work and a State license to practice Social Work in Louisiana. I practice from a Bio-Psycho-Social perspective; that is, I look at the whole person as an Individual who is also part of society. I have worked in medical and psychiatric venues which adds to my ability to address issues such as comorbidities and psychotropic medications. My specialties include Anxiety Disorder, ADHD, Bi-Polar Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder. I use CBT, Deep Relaxation Techniques, Self-Affirmations and Journaling among other techniques and treatment approaches to address these disorders. I have had a good deal of experience with adults and the elderly with pre-existing conditions, such as kidney failure. I think I can help because I come from a Bio-Psycho-Social perspective and because I tailor my treatment approach to the clients I am treating. Different techniques work better for different people.
