Hi, My name is Cindy. Thank you for looking at my profile. Before I tell you about my experience and education, I would like to tell you a little bit about my approaches to counseling. First and foremost, please know that your healing and your journey is important to me. Therefore, along the way I will ask you if my approaches are working for you and if you are comfortable with them. I will also welcome your feedback at any time as well. That being said, I am trained in both traditional and non-traditional counseling techniques. I like to use both. I am formally trained in Client Centered ( Carl Rogers ) techniques. These techniques are designed to help you feel heard and have your feelings validated. Please know that you deserve this. I also have training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy which focuses on ways in which your thinking may be causing you stress/distress. I love a holistic approach to therapy, therefore, I received extra training in the Expressive Arts. This may sound scary to those of you who are not artists, but being an artist has nothing to do with expressive art. Expressive art is a means of expressing yourself and discovering your true inner feelings, inner voice and inner power. Instead of just talking about your issues/concerns, I would encourage you to draw them, paint them, dance them out, write them out,. etc. Whatever feels comfortable for you. The whole point of these modalities, is to move blocked energy (issues) out of your body which holds memory. Memories are not just stored in your brain. The body remembers and the body reacts. Especially to trauma. But you don't have to have been traumatized to benefit from these techniques. Expressive Art can help you with self esteem issues, depression, anxiety, motivation, life decisions, career choices, eating disorders and sleeping problems. No one ever has to see your artwork or see you move in an expressive and meaningful way. I also love and have experience with Inner Child Work. It is very effective and not at all scary. Ideally, I like to combine both traditional therapies with some form of the Expressive Arts. They reinforce each other. But, ultimately, it is up to you and what works best for you. I also like to teach various powerful visualizations. I received my Master of Education in Mental Health Counseling from Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts in January of 2001. I became licensed in 2007. I received a Certificate in The Facilitation of Expressive Arts from Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island in 2007. I have over 22 years of experience working with both men and women and with families and children of all ages. I look forward to working with you. Thank you and Namaste, (the spirit in me honors the spirit in you) Cindy

I believe that therapy is a collaborative process where we work together to make progress towards your goals. I encourage you to be honest with me about your needs so that your experience is productive and beneficial to your well-being. You can trust that I will be honest with you in order to build a strong therapeutic relationship. I have an eclectic style, drawing on a variety of strength based techniques such as CBT, emotional regulation, and relaxation techniques. I have a warm, engaging style and my approach is collaborative, practical and solution focused. I approach each session with the understanding that the individual is the expert on themselves and that they bring a unique set of needs, goals and strengths. My belief is that my role is to help empower and guide each individual to see their potential and get “unstuck” from patterns that have not and are not working for them. My number one priority is to provide a safe, nonjudgmental environment where you can feel supported in order to explore your experiences and challenges. That being said, our first session will be focused on building rapport. You will find yourself sharing about who you are and what has brought you to seek out therapy. We will talk about your history and background and begin to explore your initial goals.

How does the cost of an in-person therapist compare to BetterHelp?

The average price of an in-person therapy session in the US with most therapists is $100 to $200 per hour. These prices may be higher in Northampton due to a higher cost of living, and a limited number of therapists taking new clients. The price also depends on the type of provider you are looking for. See the following average prices for various mental health providers without insurance:

  • With a psychiatrist: $150-$500
  • With therapists: $100-300
  • With a clinician: $100

While many psychologists in Northampton may not take health insurance, some in the state of Massachusetts may work on a sliding scale, meaning they'll factor in your income and charge what you can afford per session. With a BetterHelp therapist throughout the state of Massachusetts you can expect significantly more affordable options, with sessions ranging from $65 to $100 per week (billed every four weeks).

Is BetterHelp right for me?

One of the potentially rewarding aspects of working with a therapist is the validation and active listening they can provide. Your friends and loved ones may also be available to listen, but you may feel that they may lack the skills to provide objective guidance. Counselors are trained to respond to various concerns, symptoms, and mental health conditions.

Therapists in your city can support you toward a healthier emotional state, regardless of your mental health, life concerns, or healing needs. While supporting individuals in developing healthier habits, another good benefit of therapy in Northampton is having an understanding, safe space with a non-judgmental party who can support you through challenging experiences.

Should I find a Northampton therapist or psychologist for therapy if I feel fine?

Some simply don't feel the need to see a psychologist. However, some people may avoid attending therapy due to stigma or preconceived notions of what it might entail. Although psychologists often support people with mental health conditions, you do not need a diagnosis or specific condition. You can discuss grief, relationship concerns, stress, or life changes and ask for general feedback. A Northampton licensed clinical social worker may help you gain power over your life and emotions while you navigate day-to-day experiences.

Gaining a new perspective on yourself through various therapies might allow you to improve your self-esteem, work through relationships, and gain a better sense of your mental health goals. The success you may find with a counselor can be dependent on your process.

People may also attend therapy for specific motives, such as bullying, an autism diagnosis, a desire to learn mindfulness meditation, personality concerns, trouble with office workers, specific phobias, and many other principles that a counselor can help with.

Is therapy worth it?

Therapy with a licensed counselor is effective and has the power to change individuals' lives. Each client is at a different stage of their emotional healing journey in life, as each human can be unique in their personality, expression, skills, and goals. An experienced clinician can target various symptoms, experiences, and personalities to help you feel your best and put you on the path to healing. Unlike advice from a friend, family, or non-professional, a mental health therapist has an understanding of various disorders like ADHD and depression with many hours of experience in treating adults in their practice. For this reason, seeing an evidence based licensed clinician in Northampton, Massachusetts can be worth it. Over 41 million adults in the US attend therapy services each year, showing it's a popular option and is proven to be effective.

Counseling with an online Northampton provider

Northampton has many clinicians who practice person or client-centered individual therapy in-person and through online sessions to assist clients in their healing journey. If you opt into trying it online, you might also be able to meet with providers all over the United States and change easily at any time. Many people struggling with anxiety and depression, substance abuse, body image issues, and more find therapists that are a good fit for them, feel supported, and gain further insight into their lives through internet-based treatment.

Do therapists judge you in therapy?

The boundaries between you and a therapist are in place to help you and them regarding ethical concerns. Mental health professionals are held by ethical standards through the American Psychological Association (APA) and are not allowed to judge or harm their clients. If you are concerned about sharing details about yourself, feel free to withhold personal information. Their job in the therapeutic relationship is to create a safe place, help you gain a deeper understanding of your mental health, and support you. You might consider changing counselors if you don't feel safe or respected.
