You want to live your best life, yet it seems that obstacles keep getting in the way. Hi, I'm Jacqueline Julien. I've been a licensed psychologist for 12 years and worked in a variety of settings, from inpatient treatment to a juvenile detention center to community mental health centers. I'm collaborative in my approach to helping others, after all you know you best and I'm not your father (ah yes, I also like to bring a bit of humor to counseling - that was a Star Wars reference in case you missed it). I work with people who are going through difficult life changes, who are having issues with becoming the person they know they are inside, are suffering from depression or anxiety and parenting. I have also taught university psychology courses since becoming a psychologist. I use an eclectic style (that is just a fancy word for using what works best for you) in my counseling. My style includes you taking an active role in solving your issues, figuring out what you want and how to go after it and how your thoughts, emotions and behaviors interact with each other driving you to (or not to) take action. While how we get to where you are going can vary, I do believe that you want to live your best life and try to reach it. Only at times you don't know how to get there or other obstacles get in your way. I also like to build off what you do well and how you can do more of what you already know to solve the difficulties you are experiencing (even though it may seem like you aren't doing anything well right now). I am straight forward with clients, but not confrontational. I want to see you get through this difficult time in your life and to get to a place you feel good about being. Please note that I only have daytime availability for live sessions.

My name is Madison and I have been providing therapy services for over 7 years in Ohio and Minnesota. I have experience working with individuals of all ages and walks of life in a variety of settings, including schools, physician's office/hospitals, and private practice. My approach typically includes methods from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT, Solutions-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT). Some issues I specialize in include anxiety, depression, behavioral concerns, interpersonal conflict, and coping with major life changes. However, I believe that every client is unique and has different needs, even if they are facing similar challenges. It is my job to figure out which approach will be most effective for you. I received my Bachelor of Science in Social Work and my Master of Social Work degrees from the Ohio State University, where I also played division 1 hockey. As an athlete, I learned that resiliency, determination, and collaboration are important skills not only in sports, but also in life. As a therapist, I see my clients as my teammate. We will work together towards a common goal, which we will set together. You have your strengths, and we will identify those and use them to our advantage. The fact that you are here shows me that you are ready to make a change. Seeking support is the first and most difficult step. I am so glad that you are here, and am excited for us to work together to improve your quality of life. Welcome to our starting line!

Hello! Thank you for taking a few minutes to learn more about me! My name is Dani and I’ve been working in the substance use and behavioral health fields for thirteen years. I have a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Minnesota Duluth and a master’s degree in mental health counseling from Capella University. I am an independently licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Minnesota as well as a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor. I have worked primarily in the non-profit sector but, have worked directly with corrections, court, and probation clients during that time as well. Although I have worked with adolescents, my primary focus has been adult clientele. I have additional training in grief counseling and working with individuals that have experienced trauma. The majority of my experience has been with those that have concerns with both substance abuse and mental health. This allows me to help with not only mental health concerns but, substance abuse issues and how the two intertwine. I have worked in a small community and due to this, have learned the importance of protecting confidentiality and the benefits of engaging in online counseling to ensure you have an objective opinion. Throughout my career I have subscribed to the idea of cognitive behavioral therapy as I like the very involved, practical approach to looking at out problems and concerns and changing the patterns of thinking that keep us from moving past these things to where we want to be. Once we learn our goals, cognitive behavioral therapy approaches help us to reach them in practical terms. I do believe that you should be able to direct what you want out of therapy and what you want to accomplish so, we will work together in order to make the changes you are looking to implement and set reachable goals to get there. I am looking forward to working with you!

Hi. I'm Michelle Carter, LICSW, MSW, SAP, with DBT and Trauma credential (CTTP) eligibility. My primary interest and concern is you, your goals and current or persistent challenge(s). I believe the therapeutic process is a collaborative one. You may know what you want and need, yet you experience obstacles. Sometimes, we aren't sure of what we truly want or need. Sometimes, we get distracted by the "should do's" or "should be's," that are actually someone else's wants or needs. Somewhere along the journey, we can pick up rocks we carry, unaware that we can set some of these down. We can become free to keep and carry those goals, values and ideas we truly want for ourselves in our lives. This then applies equally to others. I act as a guide to assist you in discovering greater self-awareness, acceptance, and strengths I will support you in a nonjudgmental exploratory journey to define and reach your goals that come from the healthy, confident you-- not from fear or symptomatology. We can explore and determine how best to decrease the symptoms or behaviors that are holding you back from more meaningful, free and joyful experiences. I look forward to working with you. toward greater health and personal freedom. Michelle

Some other commonly asked questions on therapy with a licensed counselor and BetterHelp serving the Grand Rapids area can be found below:

How does the cost of in-person counseling with a therapist compare to the cost of BetterHelp with a licensed Grand Rapids therapist?

The average price of an in-person therapy session in the US with most therapists is $100 to $200 per hour. These prices may be higher in Grand Rapids due to a higher cost of living, and a limited number of therapists taking new clients. The price also depends on the type of provider you are looking for. See the following average prices for various mental health providers without insurance:

  • Counseling with a psychiatrist: $150-$500
  • Counseling with therapists: $100-300
  • Therapy with a clinician: $100

While many psychologists in Grand Rapids may not take health insurance, some in the state of Minnesota may work on a sliding scale, meaning they'll factor in your income and charge what you can afford per session. With a BetterHelp therapist throughout the state of Minnesota you can expect significantly more affordable options, with sessions ranging from $65 to $100 per week (billed every four weeks).

How do I know if online counseling is right for my family in Grand Rapids?

One of the potentially rewarding aspects of working with a therapist is the validation and active listening they can provide. Your friends and loved ones may also be available to listen, but you may feel that they may lack the skills to provide objective guidance. Counselors are trained to respond to various concerns, symptoms, and mental health conditions.

Therapists in your city can support you toward a healthier emotional state, regardless of your mental health, life concerns, or healing needs. While supporting individuals in developing healthier habits, another good benefit of Grand Rapids therapy is having an understanding, safe space with a non-judgmental party who can support you through challenging experiences.

Many people have sensitive topics that they may feel ashamed to discuss with their friends or partner. A therapist can help you confront these concerns and open up through unique methods of support. Should I find a therapist or psychologist for therapy if I feel fine?

Some simply don't feel the need to see a psychologist. However, some people may avoid attending therapy due to stigma or preconceived notions of what it might entail. Although psychologists often support people with mental health conditions, you do not need a diagnosis or specific condition. You can discuss grief, relationship concerns, stress, or life changes and ask for general feedback. A Grand Rapids licensed clinical social worker may help you gain power over your life and emotions while you navigate day-to-day experiences.

Gaining a new perspective on yourself through various therapies might allow you to improve your self-esteem, work through relationships, and gain a better sense of your mental health goals. The success you may find with a Grand Rapids counselor can be dependent on your process.

People may also attend therapy for specific motives, such as bullying, an autism diagnosis, a desire to learn mindfulness meditation, personality concerns, trouble with office workers, specific phobias, and many other principles that a counselor can help with.

Is mental health care and therapy with a therapist worth it?

Therapy with a licensed counselor is effective and has the power to change individuals' lives. Each client is at a different stage of their emotional healing journey in life, as each human can be unique in their personality, expression, skills, and goals. An experienced clinician can target various symptoms, experiences, and personalities to help you feel your best and put you on the path to healing. Unlike advice from a friend, family, or non-professional, a mental health therapist has an understanding of various disorders like ADHD and depression with many hours of experience in treating adults in their practice. For this reason, seeing an evidence based licensed clinician in Grand Rapids, Minnesota can be worth it. Over 41 million adults in the US attend therapy services each year, showing it's a popular option and is proven to be effective.

Grand Rapids has many clinicians who practice person or client-centered individual therapy in-person and through online sessions to assist clients in their healing journey. If you opt into online therapy, you might also be able to meet with providers all over the United States and change easily at any time. Many people struggling with anxiety and depression, substance abuse, body image issues, and more find therapists that are a good fit for them, feel supported, and gain further insight into their lives through internet-based therapy.

Do therapists judge you in therapy sessions during telehealth appointments?

The boundaries between you and a therapist are in place to help you and them regarding ethical concerns. Mental health professionals are held by ethical standards through the American Psychological Association (APA) and are not allowed to judge or harm their clients. If you are concerned about sharing details about yourself, feel free to withhold personal information. Their job in the therapeutic relationship is to create a safe place, help you gain a deeper understanding of your mental health, and support you. You might consider changing counselors if you don't feel safe or respected.
