Aloha! My name is Brooke Maloney and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Missouri and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Hawaii. I have nearly 15 years experience working as a professional counselor in several different settings. Most recently I worked as an Outreach Counselor in a public middle school for students in 6-8th grade. Here I helped students manage interpersonal issues often arising from conflicts at home, social media, or with their peers. Prior to this, I spent time working as an Individual and Family Therapist. My clients came from all walks of life; some were experiencing difficulty in their lives because of prior abuse and trauma while others were having a hard time navigating and adjusting to certain life events such as the death of a loved one, angry and oppositional children, and/or work and life difficulties. I have worked with families who were having issues establishing roles and defining expectations for all of the members; as well as extensive experience helping clients struggling with anxiety, depression, adjustments issues, and other relationship based concerns. My main goal when working with a client is to not only help alleviate the problem that they are coming to therapy to deal with but to also aid the person in creating the life of their dreams. We often get focused on the symptoms but forget to look at the overall picture of how we would like our lives to look and feel and what steps are needed to get there. Once we begin to work through the current problem we are better able to look to the future and decided how we want it to look and more importantly, how we want to feel about the life we live. I strive to help clients through a cognitive-behavioral, person centered approach where I integrate mindfulness-based therapy to promote good mental and physical health. In addition, I have had amazing transformational results using a fairly new technique called Emotional Freedom Technique, sometimes shortened to just "Tapping". This form of therapy has been used to treat anxiety, PTSD, aid in weight loss, and to lessen stress and other interpersonal issues. Any life problem can be aided by learning this easily taught and integrated healing modality and we can integrate it into your therapy sessions if you so choose. Reaching out for help at any point in our lives can be a very difficult decision. Going the distance with a trusted therapist can make all the difference. With that in mind, allow me to share who I am and what I can offer to you. I began this part of my life journey after working in many industries and at many jobs. After my children were grown and gone, I decided to pursue my lifelong career dream of counseling people. After returning to school and obtaining my Master's Degree, I took early retirement to begin my new career. I have been a Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Missouri for eighteen years. During these years I worked with many individuals and families - active duty military families, refugees and immigrants that fled war and torture; incarcerated individuals and their families, as well as ordinary couples and families who seek to improve their lives. Please know that along with my professional training and licensing, I bring the addition of my many decades of life experiences that, I believe, have proven invaluable to my empathy and understanding of where you may be in your life. I strive, first and foremost, to LISTEN. If I don’t do that, I will not know what you need or what we will need to do together to address your reasons for counseling. The therapeutic approaches that I have found most effective are Solution Focused Therapy, Eclectic Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. You may not know what any of these therapies mean. THAT’S OKAY! These therapies are merely a way to help me determine the best way to help you feel comfortable, to help you identify your true problem and provide a framework to help me help you find ways for you to manage or eliminate the concern that brought you to counseling. My goal is to always be empathetic and supportive of your thoughts, ideas, and needs. Honesty is an invaluable part of therapy and I will always aim to help you feel safe enough to be honest with yourself, so that you can be honest with me, as we collaborate to meet your therapy goals. Judgment is not a part of how I function. Ultimately, my overarching desire is to LISTEN, be SUPPORTIVE, and HELP YOU IDENTIFY your true reason for counseling NOW, and then work with you to achieve your counseling goals with open and honest communication. I am a licensed professional counselor and advanced alcohol drug counselor who has served clients in Missouri, Texas and Oregon. I have been providing services for 10 years as an addictions counselor, dual-diagnosis therapist, crisis counselor and therapist for those with serious and persistent mental disorders. I have practiced in multiple arenas including community counseling centers, schools, secure and non-secure criminal justice facilities, hospitals and private homes. I spent a few years in administrative roles but always returned to what I love...working directly with clients. My approach is somewhat eclectic in that I assess each client and use the modality best suited for their current challenges. This may include Motivational Interviewing, Solution Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Applied Positive Psychology and Person-Centered Therapy. Teaching and supporting clients in learning new skills is also very important to me and are included in many of my treatment plans. I take a holistic approach by looking at the body, spirit and mind. I believe that nutrition, exercise, mindfulness and overall health play a foundational part in the therapy process. I have a Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology from Missouri State University. Since graduating, I have pursued additional education and training in multiple areas including positive psychology, anger management, relationship skills, domestic violence, and suicide prevention. In my over 30 year career as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I have been privileged to connect with three year olds to 103 year olds! My motivation is to make a positive difference in the time I am given in this world. My first recommendation to all clients is to advocate for yourself as you choose a therapist.
