Hi and welcome! You have taken the courageous step to a happier and healthier life...good for you! I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor with 20 plus years of experience and am excited to work with you. Some of my specific areas of focus include depression and anxiety, family and relationship issues, trauma, grief and low self-esteem. My approach is simple and straight forward...I believe it is crucial to have a trusting relationship with your therapist. Through that relationship we will take a journey of discovery and transformation together. And along the way we will conquer the issues that are holding you back or simply stressing you out. In therapy I typically utilize Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing with a general sense of Person Centered Therapy in which the therapeutic relationship is of utmost importance. I began my career working in Substance Abuse running several treatment programs in Florida and North Carolina. Eventually I started my own general counseling practice in North Carolina where I spent many years working with adults, children and families. Most of my time with clients was focused on stress related issues, depression & anxiety, trauma, and relationship and family dynamics. I look forward to starting this journey with you!

Welcome! I’m April, a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in North Carolina. Congratulations on taking the first step towards reaching your goals. Don’t discount the decision you’ve made to search for help, because many people never do so. I see counseling as a partnership between the therapist and the client; I have the mental health expertise while you’re the expert of you! For this reason I'll spend our earliest contacts getting to know you better. Choosing a therapist is a very personal decision and therefore, I want to give you information so you can choose for yourself if you’d like to work with me. I would describe my counseling style as warm, but professional. I love to use strength-based approaches as much as possible, also incorporating your values into our work. I find myself using an integrative approach, incorporating different theoretical frameworks and techniques that I will tailor to fit your needs. Two approaches I use most often are Person-Centered Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Person-Centered counseling uses a lot of reflection to help you process your thoughts and feelings, which is often the first step towards solving your problems. CBT helps us examine your thought patterns and whether they are helpful or harmful. If a particular thought is harmful that could trigger issues like a depressed mood, for example. We’ll work together to replace the harmful thoughts with more helpful ones. There are many other approaches to potentially integrate into our sessions, and I’d be happy to explain anything I believe may benefit you. I once read a quote online (source unknown) that rings true for me: “A counselor isn’t someone you pay to pretend they care about you. A counselor is someone you pay to teach you how to care for yourself.”

I am a retired psychologist licensed in the state of North Carolina. Over the past 35 years, I have worked in a variety of mental health and educational settings. These have included a state vocational rehabilitation center, public schools, private practice, mental health center, and teaching in a small university. My goal in my professional career has been to experience as much as I could in different settings. In doing so I felt my varied experiences could help me provide the best services to my clients. Along with the professional experiences, I also enjoy traveling and learning about other cultures. I attended schools in Wyoming, Idaho, Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia. In each university, I learned a variety of techniques to put in my psychology toolbox. I prefer a combination of solution based and cognitive based techniques as I feel that everyone has goals but are just not sure how to obtain them. I believe my role is to assist clients to find the best path to reach them. I encourage and assist my clients to come up with their own way of getting to their goal and not rely on my way for them. I feel a sense of humor and enjoyment of music can often help in many if not all situations. My hope for you is that together we will find the path to reaching your goal(s). I will walk the path with you and support you in your journey. Last, I ask that you commit to at least three sessions so that I can get to know you better and you can decide if I am the right person to assist you on your way. Thank you for considering me.

I am Cynia R. Black: daughter, sister, friend, and spirited clinical therapist. My goal is to support individuals , couples and families through life's difficult moments. Over the last 8 years, I have gained most of my experience working in the intensive in-home and outpatient mental health setting as a Family Consultant with youth ages birth to 12 years old, and a Family Therapist with families of youth ages 10 to 17 years old. With this work, I have developed a strong passion for working alongside young adults on a very integral part of their journey- transitioning from adolescence to adulthood. I have observed that oftentimes adolescents have been perceived by society as being "difficult" and "incapable" of change rather than seeing them as people who are trying to adapt to a transition in which they feel like they have no control. As a therapist, I am committed to empowering and supporting my clients by increasing resiliency, and positive well being, and helping to develop sustainable coping strategies. I am looking forward to doing this work and continuing this journey together with you!
