My education includes my Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Campbell University in North Carolina. I completed my graduate studies in Social Work at University of North Carolina in Wilmington. I have practiced behavioral therapy for eight years following my 2012 graduation from University of North Carolina in Wilmington. The populations I have served during that time have varied greatly. I have worked with children under 10 whose behaviors disrupted the success they could accomplish at home, school, and other environments that they were in. I also helped children ages 12-19 who were needing behavioral health services to identify their needs and how they could go about having their needs met that also allowed them to meet the societal needs placed on them. Societal needs being: appropriate school performance, eliminating or reducing involvement in the juvenile justice system, and improving interactions with those within the child's home. For years, I worked with adults with dual diagnoses of mental health and developmental disability. I am currently working with the military population where I do individual and couples therapy. My treatment approaches include learning what brings my clients joy, what they enjoy doing, who is important to them, and goals they have. I then dig deep into these elements to identify value system, core values, and how clients view themselves. From there, I ask in what way can I assist them to get to the destination they want to get to. The destination can be a mental, emotional, or physical. Also, the destination can be interpersonal. The therapeutic models that I use to aid me in helping my clients are: narrative therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, solution focused therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and motivational interviewing. I have experience with clients that have symptoms of anxiety, trauma, depression, PTSD, low self-esteem, poor self image, self-critical, impulsivity related to anger, difficulty adjusting, grief, and loss.

Welcome! My name is Linda Schelander and I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in the state of North Carolina. I have a Masters degree in Counseling from Southwestern College in Santa Fe, NM and I have been working in the mental health field for over twenty years. Thank you for taking that courageous step to engage in counseling. I strive to build a comfortable, trusting relationship with each one of my clients; building a therapeutic relationship that feels SAFE is one of my top priorities. My approach to therapy is primarily client centered as I believe each person is the experts on his/her/themselves and their lives. I believe that clients determine the direction and depth of the therapy. I use several therapy approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which helps you explore thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that might be leading to an unproductive life and/or keeping you feeling stuck emotionally. I use trauma-based therapies as well as mindfulness based therapies to assist you in coping with and managing the symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD, poor self image, grief and loss, overwhelming stress, major life transitions, and more. I can provide you with tools to improve your interpersonal communications with those close to you. At times, I will challenge you as I assist you in exploring who you are, and what you want in your life. My goal for you is that you be able to express your emotions fully, manage your symptoms, make needed changes, believe in yourself, and move toward the life you want.
