Sarah Stevens
Hello! My name is Sarah. I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) in North Carolina. After seeing a therapist for myself back in the 1990s, I realized how utterly beneficial it was to be able to speak openly with an objective listener who knew how to be empathic! For about 10 years, I dabbled in searching for a true career. I then decided that I would like to be a counselor and provide the comfort and relief to others the way that my first therapist did for me. I have been a practicing psychotherapist since 2012, and I have treated mostly individual adults and sometimes couples. I have helped people deal with depression, stress and anxiety, grief and loss, trauma, relationship struggles, and life transition struggles. I utilize a mixture of Client-Focused Therapy, CBT, DBT, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Grief Therapy, and Couples Therapy when I'm treating my clients. I customize these therapies depending on each client's needs. Here is my firm belief of my purpose as a therapist: Everyone can benefit in some way from talking to an objective listener. I have always believed and experienced that. I’m surprised sometimes when I realize that some of my clients have never been able to express their concerns or even their excitement to friends and family without being criticized, laughed at, or invalidated. That’s such a shame, because every person deserves to be heard and respected for what he or she has to say. I strive to be a non-judgmental ear and to guide my clients toward discovering their innate abilities to improve tough life situations. I look forward to our work together!

It is my goal to assist my clients with bridging the gap from where they are emotionally, cognitively, physically, and spiritually to where they want to be. I am a licensed clinical social worker with 20 plus years’ experience including private and group practice, education, government and psychiatric trauma. I am certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and have extensive training in evidence-based practices in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills training, and Solution Focused Brief Therapy. I equip my clients with techniques to reduce symptoms associated with transitions, anxiety, post traumatic stress (PTSD) depression, and generational trauma. They learn the building blocks to release negative emotions, reduce/eliminate physiological arousal triggers, reduce stress, and develop a sense of calm and clarity. They also learn how to improve the quality of their relationships. The by-product of working with me is goal achievement, internal and external healing. My philosophy in counseling is that life is a journey that gives us new opportunities every day to live the life we desire. No two days are the same, and we will have highs and lows, but it’s up to us to stay the course, reset or make changes as needed. We also must gather the experiences and supports along the way to get to where we want to go next. I have a passion for empowering people to heal and break free from traumatic experiences that causes distressing emotions. Working with me, you will receive the tools necessary to step up to a whole new level of empowerment, confidence, and vitality. You will also take steps to release disempowering patterns and thoughts that limit your goal achievement and hinder quality relationships. You have the right, and internal power to heal. I look forward to joining you on your journey!

I am a Marriage and Family Therapist licensed in North Carolina, Oklahoma and Virginia. I have over 30 years of experience working with clients presenting with a wide range of concerns including relationship difficulties, depression, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD and adjustment problems. I am certified as a telemental health provider.and also as a clinical trauma professional. My intake process involves a thorough assessment of needs and strengths, usually from a Solution Focused Brief Therapy approach. I strive to help clients to clearly identify the problems that brought them to therapy and the challenges they are facing, and then to collaborate with them to formulate specific, measurable goals to address the identified problems and challenges and find effective solutions. I have extensive experience working with both individuals and couples and enjoy working with clients of various ethnicities and cultural backgrounds. Before moving to North Carolina in 2019 I worked primarily with active duty or retired military members, their spouses, significant others or family members through the Department of the Navy's Fleet and Family Support program. Military families experience problems arising from frequent moves, extended family separations due to deployments or other assignments, and the anxiety and fear family members feel when the service member is in a dangerous situation or when regular communication is not possible. In addition I assisted clients who had experienced domestic violence or childhood abuse or neglect. I also have extensive experience working with parents to improve communication with their children, learn and apply more effective discipline techniques, and develop helpful behavior management practices. I am also well qualified and experienced in providing clinical services from a Christian perspective for clients who prefer a faith based therapy approach. My approach to therapy is individualized and focused on the unique strengths and challenges of each client. My therapeutic style is engaging and collaborative exploring with each client the strengths he or she already has to find solutions. I draw on tools and perspectives from several approaches including Brief Solution Focused Therapy, Family Systems Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy. I know that it takes courage to reach out for help. I would be honored to assist you as you address the concerns that are motivating you to seek counseling services. I believe that together we can find solutions.

As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for the past 12 years, I have worked with people experiencing challenges largely related to anxiety. Anxiety presents itself for different reasons, but it is not something you need to be afraid of. Our thought life impacts our well-being at the core of who we are and every aspect of how we see life starts with a thought. In your thoughts about therapy, I imagine you are desiring support and guidance to navigate a specific challenge in your life at this time.
