I am a Clinical Mental Health Therapist with over 16 years of experience working with children, adolescents, adults and families in community mental health, educational and private practice settings. Prior to that, I spent 20 years in pastoral ministry. I completed my Masters in Counseling Psychology in 2008 from Northwestern Oklahoma State University, and soon after moved to Northwest New Mexico/Southwest Colorado. My professional experience includes: Administrator of a Residential Treatment Center, Clinical Administrator for Children's Behavioral Health, Student Assistance Coordinator for a school district, Visiting Professor at a School of Social Work, Private Practice, Outpatient Clinical Manager, Health Services Coordinator for a school district, and Integrated Behavioral Health Provider in a family medical practice setting. In addition to working with high risk/high needs children and adolescents, I work primarily with trauma as well as anxiety and depression. I also serve as a Certified First Responder Counselor. My counseling approach is collaborative and skill based from the perspective that people aren't "broken" and need to be "fixed" and instead are seeking to improve their lives to be stronger and healthier. My role then becomes a guide and companion on the alternative life journey that people choose. The first step on your new journey has been taken by reaching out for help. I look forward to traveling along that journey with you for a while.

I believe that every person holds the power and resources necessary to find happiness. As a trans woman I understand both the external and the internal forces that create self-doubt and spike fear—the loneliness, the separateness, and the tailspin of uncertainty. I know, too, from professional and personal experience that self-acceptance and happiness are within everyone--and science clearly indicates that those who seek help benefit from it. I utilize a mindfulness-based approach, working primarily with members of the LGBTQAI+ community, but I welcome all those who seek an empathic, supportive, and nonjudgmental collaborator to a better, more fulfilling and satisfying life????️????

Tonya Walker
I am licensed as a mental health professional in Nebraska and New Mexico (living in New Mexico) with nine years of experience. I have worked with clients on the gender spectrum, individually and in groups, with a wide range of concerns, including: trauma, PTSD, domestic violence, sexual trauma, LGBTQ+, depression, coping strategies, grief, anxiety and relationship issues. My BA in Psychology and Russian is from the University of Oregon and my MA in Counseling is from the University of New Mexico. My counseling approach is integrative and begins with the core of person centered therapy in addition to aspects of solution focused therapy and at times elements of cognitive behavioral therapy. I believe that counseling is an opportunity for me to join you in the process of finding what is and isn't working for you and supporting you in creating change to help you navigate life with confidence. I see my role as helping you identify and work on your goals for counseling, increase your self awareness, self understanding and self compassion.

Samantha Nelums
I am licensed in California and New Mexico with over 12 years of professional social work experience (5 years in the clinical setting). I have experience in helping clients with LGBTQ+ related issues specifically around family acceptance and coming out. I also work with the general population on general family-related conflicts, boundary-setting, self-esteem, and self-empowerment. While I am an ally to gender diverse communities, I do not specialize in gender dysphoria and or writing letters for gender affirming surgery. Although I am a supporter for the cause, I feel that medical communities should not have authority in decisions related to how one's body, rather I believe that the individual themselves should have that autonomy. I think that you are the expert of your story and that you have many strengths that will assist you in overcoming things that challenge you.

Amber Sorsek
I am a graduate of USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work master’s program and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I graduated in 2017 and began practicing social work as an LMSW in 2018. I served families and individuals as a social work case manager in a hospital and worked in private practice as a therapist. I trained and began practicing Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) in 2019. I continued to serve as a therapist in private practice via telehealth through the COVID-19 pandemic until filling a new position as a telehealth counselor for New Mexico Treatment Services (addiction treatment/methadone clinic). I moved to Japan and obtained her LCSW in 2020. As an LCSW, I served families, couples, and children in the military community as the Family Advocacy Treatment Manager. My approach as a therapist is trauma-informed and guided by the ecological systems theory, which assesses how physical, social, political, and cultural systems affect an individual. I value a person-centered and non-judgmental while viewing the experiences of others from their point of view. I emphasize a collaborative healing process with clients and believes this is key for the therapeutic relationship. Some of the general interventions I practices are: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Problem-Solving Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Narrative Therapy. • Individual counseling: In addition to the general interventions I practice, I an also certified in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). The DBT model guides my overall approach for individual counseling. I work collaboratively with clients to identify and build their strengths, identify and process emotions, build acceptance, and make nondestructive choices. • Trauma-Informed counseling: I practice EMDR to treat trauma. I will conduct assessments and discuss the risks and benefits of EMDR with clients to make informed decisions about the right approach to trauma treatment for each individual. I will work with clients to decrease trauma symptoms while maintaining safety. • Couples counseling: I practice the Gottman Method as an approach to couples’ therapy. The overall goals are to reduce verbal conflict, increase intimacy, respect, and affection. This happens in therapy by building empathy and understanding within the relationship. While these are the general goals of couples’ therapy, I will work collaboratively with the couple to identify problems and set goals. I am certified in DBT through Evergreen Certifications. DBT is designed to help clients accept circumstances and make changes, manage and express strong emotions, analyze behaviors, learn healthier patterns of responding, improve relationships with others in their lives, learn new skills, and receive support. I was trained in EMDR through the River's Edge Institute and I am certified. EMDR is a structured therapy that uses bilateral stimulation while the client is encouraged to focus briefly on the traumatic memory. The Gottman Method is an approach to couples therapy that begins with thorough assessments completed by the couple to help the therapist understand the relationship within the context of the Sound Relationship House Theory. “The goals of Gottman Method Couples Therapy are to disarm conflicting verbal communication; increase intimacy, respect, and affection; remove barriers that create a feeling of stagnancy; and create a heightened sense of empathy and understanding within the context of the relationship.”
