I am a licensed clinical counselor in Ohio, and I am also licensed in California. For over fifteen years, I have worked with adults with addiction, anxiety, grief and depression. Many of my clients have experienced past trauma, family conflicts, and issues with motivation and self-esteem. My vision of counseling is to come along side the person who is hurting to offer understanding and encouragement as you share your story so that together we can figure out a plan for moving forward. My counseling techniques emphasize behavioral strategies and interpersonal skills, while drawing on the tenets of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). ACT emphasizes living and engaging in life according to your values so that you make intentional choices and feel better with the choices you make. My overall approach is person-centered, and our interaction will always be underscored by respect and genuine care. We want our lives to matter, and we want to be important to those we love. Being seen and heard is crucial, and sometimes, just feeling understood for a moment is priceless. I am very grateful to have the opportunity to work with you here in this forum!

Welcome! I have been a licensed clinician for over 25 years. Throughout the years, I have worked with clients of varying ages across an array of service areas. For example, I have worked with clients to discuss topics such as mental health, coping strategies, anxiety, decision making/problem solving, grief and loss, family changes/conflicts, stress, and coping with long-term or new medical conditions. I also have extensive experience working with individuals with previous involvement in the criminal justice system. This work has provided me with the opportunity to also work with the family members, loved ones, and others connected to the person who may have served time. I am comfortable working with individuals seeking to enter the workforce for the first time, re-entering the workforce or interested in changing career paths. I would work with you to identify the talents you are interested in highlighting in an upcoming job search as well as addressing barriers that may have impacted employment situations in the past. When working with clients, I strive to provide a supportive and safe space to communicate. We can work together to identify realistic strategies for your progress and long-term success. My number one priority is to be a great listener and provide support along the way. It is important to me that you walk away from our time together, feeling heard and respected. I promote a therapeutic environment that stands on the value that “all are welcomed here”. Our differences should be treated with compassion and dignity. I look forward to working with you!

I believe your story is important. The pain, the victories, the traumas, and the triumphs - all of those elements come together in a way that can either devastate us, hold us back, or motivate us to move forward. I want to cheer you on as you move farther forward than you imagined was possible. I have a compassionate, empathetic, and kind heart. Because we talk about some hard things, my unique sense of humor is a purposeful tool used to disarm and relax you as we find the best strategies to help move you towards your goals. I believe that all clients who want to get better can get better. As your provider, I will extend hope - even if you may currently not be able to. My positive attitude, combined with a realistic perspective and honest feedback, can help you improve your life. Please note: I only provide asynchronous therapy on BetterHelp through messaging. We have relationships with other people, of course, but we also are in relationships with places and things and concepts - and with ourselves. We need to fully understand those relationships and how they impact our wellness and happiness. I want to hear your stories. I want to understand your point of view. And I want to help you better understand all of your relationships. When it comes to my style, my approach is heavily influenced by the work of Jean Baker Miller and Relational-Cultural Theory, but I also utilize a variety of tools from other theories like Cognitive-Behavioral, Reality Therapy, Adlerian, and Gestalt. Because I have an eclectic toolbox, I’m able to choose tools, interventions, and approaches that will work for just about anyone’s personality. I love to look at the root causes for your problems and can discuss these issues in both philosophical ways and practical ones, too. I'll work hard to provide you with what you need - but if at any time you don't think we're a good fit, you can change providers at any time. I'll also be honest with you if I think you'd do better working with someone else. I respond to messages within 24 hours (Mon-Thurs) and often much sooner. Also, I regularly send check-in messages, some encouraging words, housekeeping items, and writing prompts to make sure we're connecting and engaging together. I look forward to working with you!

Hello! Erwin McIntosh III here, but please call me "Mac." I have been in the helping profession for ten years now. I started out as a qualified mental health specialist and after getting my Master's Degree in Counseling Education, I obtained my License in Professional Counseling in the state of Ohio in 2015. In January of 2021, I became a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in the state of Ohio which means that I became an independent counselor. I have worked with a many Clients in a variety of settings including adults in nursing homes, residential homes, and parents of school aged children. I apply motivational interviewing as a foundation for the integration therapy that I utilize to help Clients heal using Person-Centered approach, explore their choices to improve them using Reality Therapy, examine their self-view to improve self-esteem using Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, and finally address the need to develop peace, mindfulness, and acceptance using Peace and Mindfulness techniques. By helping the Client heal from trauma, we open the door to new positive thoughts, a new positive mood, and a new outlook which leads to new positive choices. You learn that there is more to your life than the trauma you endured which leads to more balanced self-view and world view. Decisions can now be made from a broader framework based on hope, not pain from a past left behind physically but not mentally or emotionally. "We have to let go of what was, to enjoy what is." "We can't accept new love, if we are clutching to old pain." If you will permit me, I will use empathic listening, motivational interviewing, and integration therapy to help you heal and learn to love yourself.

LIFE CAN BE FULFILLING! We have ALL experienced stress, anger, anxiety and depression at different points of time, yet sometimes having one or all of these emotions can be overwhelming to the point of creating constant dysfunction in day-to-day living. Therapy is a liberating avenue to explore oneself and find inner peace that may be hidden under internal and external factors. It is important to feel heard and validated, especially when one is at their wits’ end. I am a firm believer in meeting each client where they are at in their journey of life and learning how they would like to approach their presenting problem(s), whether it be though visiting past experiences or keeping the discussion within the present moment; we will be able to co-create an individualized plan to help alleviate symptoms, as well as promote a healthier you, through psychoeducation, healthy interventions and self-care techniques. I am a graduate of Case Western Reserve University and bring seven years of clinical expertise to the field of adult mental health. During graduate school, I interned at Circle Health Services (formerly The Free Clinic) in Cleveland, Ohio, where I advanced my therapeutic skills in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), anger management skill training and brief psychodynamic therapies, while keeping a person-centered approach to the therapeutic relationship with my clients. Later, I had the privilege to join Jewish Family Service Association of Cleveland (JFSA), where I completed additional education in Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. Here, I learned not only about different causes of cognitive decline and the biological facets that may be affected, but how to engage with an individual no matter what stage of cognitive impairment they are experiencing. In addition to working with affected individuals, I provided ongoing psychotherapy to family caregivers, to help reduce the stress and burden that often occurs while caregiving. Throughout my time at JFSA, I earned my clinical license in social work, while being supervised by a clinical social worker who helped deepen my breadth of knowledge in Gestalt therapy, as well as grief and loss, experientialism, depression and anxiety. I have been trained by the co-founder, Dr. Carey Sherman, PhD., to facilitate the Savvy Caregiver Program and by Dr. Elizabeth O’Toole, MD, to administer an array of psychological measures, including the GDS, MoCA, PHQ-9, The Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire, QOL-AD, and the Revised Scale for Caregiving Self-Efficacy. Additionally, I have completed training and one-on-one supervision with Dr. Todd Pressman PhD. who created and certified me in his Deconstructing Anxiety model. https://toddpressman.com/certified-practitioners/
