Hello, my name is Amber Bathon. I am a licensed professional counselor (state of OR), and maintain a certification as a master addictions counselor (MAC). I received a double Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and Socio-Anthropology from Transylvania University and a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology from Lewis & Clark College. My Master's program provided me with additional training and education in the areas of marriage, couples, and family therapy and substance use counseling. During my internship hours, I was able to work and gain experience in a residential substance use treatment program providing individual, family, and group therapies while focusing on co-occurring mental health and substance use challenges. As I entered my professional career, I began providing services in outpatient treatment and private practice settings; during this time, I have worked with individuals across the lifespan. I have provided intensive in-home and community-based therapy for adults with significant and persistent mental illness with co-occurring substance use issues, as well as general outpatient mental health and substance use treatment. My primary areas of interest and focus have been related to trauma, depression, anxiety, substance use, and stress management. However, my experiences have been extremely broad and I have 8 years of experiences working in a cross-cultural agency within the Native American community. Counseling is a deeply personal encounter that allows for change, growth and development; it is an opportunity for those who receive it to recognize their strengths and find solutions to their challenges in a safe and collaborative environment. Counseling provides ways to express feelings, understand patterns of thinking and behaving, gain perspective on past events and current relationships, and set and clarify goals for the future. It can both alleviate pain and suffering, and add meaning and richness to life. Counseling provides the opportunity to map strengths, resources, and resiliency which allow us to develop a plan that will move you towards achieving your goals. My belief is that most change occurs through forming and experiencing a trusting, emotionally safe relationship, and in the context of that relationship increasing one’s awareness of self, challenging one’s old beliefs, learning new skills, establishing appropriate boundaries in relationships with others, and experiencing and letting go of old pain. My task will be to assist or attempt to assist you in this process. Within our relationship, I will work to empower you to develop awareness of yourself, your way of relating, and your unique coping skills in the face of stress and change. As your awareness increases, I will support you in developing healthy ways of expressing and fulfilling your needs and desires. I believe strongly that you are the expert in your life, and that with support, encouragement, and the appropriate tools – you will notice where exceptions exist in your story and you can develop the solution. I am looking forward to helping you on your journey!

My specialties include treating depression, anxiety, relationship issues, chemical dependency, process addictions, and trauma-related disorders. I am fortunate to have had a rewarding and successful career in the mental health field which includes working for 18 years as a fully licensed therapist, providing over 10,000 hours of individual and group psychotherapy, running my own professional training company, and doing research into psychosocial rehabilitation models. My approach to psychotherapy is very client-centered and while I am eager to learn and apply a wide variety of treatment modalities I believe this work is highly individualized. I enjoy working with a diverse client base and my priorities are to build strong relationships and work with clients to apply their individual strengths towards whatever life challenges they are seeking to overcome.

9 years defines my experience providing dual diagnosis mental health related counseling services to adolescents, adults and elders in a variety of inpatient/outpatient services in the criminal justice system in conjunction with integrated clinical health systems services. This experience gave me a new direction and way of life consisting of personal growth and change I would like to share with you. Our goal is to share my experiences with those who seek to enhance their level of personal growth and change. Serving adolescents, adults, elders, couples, families and groups with my training in an eclectic variety of treatment modalities, the actual counseling approach with a given client is determined by your preference and personal goals. With the hope that your goals will center around the self discovery of personal strengths and yielding an increase in self esteem you will realize that your integrity is the most valuable asset about yourself. Upon this discovery you will be able to share with others as you become an extension of the counseling process. My theory is when people have hope and learn to challenge and replace irrational thoughts, beliefs and attitudes they create the biology of courage. By normalizing stress people are free to experience change. In Relationship focused therapy the counselor will identify strengths by asking family members to take note of the family dynamics they want to maintain The counselor will look for exceptions to the problem by asking couples to recount times when the problem did not occur and to account for why, to formulate a solution and highlight strengths. Couples will review worksheets and experience discoveries by working together to identify strengths and cultural differences. In my experience within the past 9 years couples will experience cohesion within the family unit in which they will find new meaning and purpose. Couples will set goals that identifies a renewed value driven direction as they discover what they want to work towards and what is really important to them. At Franciccan University I was made aware and adapted my Christian basesd counseling approach to center around the Eleven Human Emotions that describe the pleasure, appetite or human emotions. The goal to acquire the good through Love Desire and Joy and to avoid the evil of Hate Aversion and Sadness. These emotions make up the heart or inner core of mans emotional life. For difficult issues it is wise to recognize the Utilitatian or assertive emotions of Hope Courage and Anger versus Despair, Sadness and Fear. These Emotions give us the energy necessary to overcome obstacles that separate us from the things that are hard to get and what we really want. Clients are encouraged to engage in each component of the Eleven Human Emotions that will give them clarity and a renewed realtionship with the Holy Spirit thus gaining compassion for themselves and others. What do you have to lose and you have everything to gain by trying!
