Hello, my name is Frankie McKelvin. I am licensed as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) from SC Board for Labor Licensing Regulations (SCLLR), License #7124. I am a member of the American Counseling Association (ACA). My clients vary from different cultural and diverse backgrounds. The clients with whom I work are psychologically and emotionally healthy and are seeking counseling for challenges arising from difficult life events. Some clients are facing more difficulties than others. However, I do not take on clients whom I cannot help using the techniques and knowledge I have available to me, or in areas that I am not trained in. I work with all individuals in life stages from adolescence through late senior years, regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability. Also, I do consider my specialty to be working with family and couples, LGBTQ populations, and their individual and family issues. In order for a client to be successful, the counseling experience includes active involvement in the process, as well as my own. Collaboratively, we will work to resolve your concerns and, hopefully, to improve the quality of your emotional life. You will be asked to apply yourself during and between sessions on a weekly basis. There may be homework assignments, including journaling, thinking about certain topics related to your situation, or completing other appropriate projects. All of these tasks are geared towards helping you to achieve the goals that we have identified for you in counseling. I take an educational approach to helping clients with their concerns and my counseling is based on these philosophies: Adlerian Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy.

I have been in the mental health profession for over 10 years. I've worked in the school setting as a school counselor and within the community as a behavioral specialist providing behavioral modification to families. I have also provided individual and group therapy in homes. I have informed parents of various community supports such as Family Connections and Developmental Pediatrics to help them with getting special education services in place for their children with special needs. I've worked with these children on their social skills, independent living skills, and self-esteem. Being a mom of a child with special needs helps in my understanding of the frustration that these children with special needs and their parents face daily. As a client-focused therapist who works with teens and adults of various ages, I believe in listening attentively to my clients and assisting them in finding their solutions to their issues. I feel that we all have the power to transform ourselves by learning ways to change our negative thoughts and actions into positive thoughts and actions. I encourage my clients to use techniques such as positive self-talk, mindfulness and journaling to help facilitate these changes. Because clients have to be willing to put in the work towards healing, I remind them of that by modeling and illustrating these techniques for them. I will provide an environment that is not judgmental with understanding. I will also evaluate clients for any type of self-harm behaviors. I understand that sometimes clients just need to talk, to feel understood and know that it is okay not feel okay. This is especially crucial for individuals to realize in these times because of the pandemic, which has more people dealing with depression, trying to find a balance in life, and re-examining their place in this world.

Every life story is filled with all kinds of moments—those of success and laughter and those of struggles and loss. In those moments when you are hurt, angry, lonely, scared or overwhelmed, it can be hard to know where to turn for direction. My passion in life is helping people to find the direction and support they need to move forward in those difficult times. I am a licensed professional counselor in South Carolina. My educational background includes a BA from Purdue University in Individual and Family Development and a MA in Clinical Counseling from Columbia International University. I have worked as an Multisystemic (MST) therapist for HIV+ teenagers, a School based Mental Health Counselor, and as a Military and Family Life Counselor. I have been helping individuals, families, and children to become aware of their inner strengths, and then, use those strengths to bring change to their current situation for over 13 years. Since every person’s story is unique, I use a variety of counseling techniques, including but not limited to, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and Brief Solution Focused Therapy. It takes courage to ask for help and seek change. If you are ready, I am here to help you grow from your struggles, heal from your pain, and move forward to where you want to be in life.

Starting or re-starting therapy can sometimes feel overwhelming – it takes courage to look at how you’re feeling or what you’re going through and decide to reach out to a therapist who can walk with you through challenging emotions, relationship dynamics, life changes, and personal goals. Maybe you’re not quite sure where to start, but you know you would like to explore what you’re feeling, your identity, or ways to continue to grow. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, I seek to create a safe, respectful space to embrace this vulnerable work. I believe our identities are shaped by our thoughts, feelings, relationships, trauma (from acute to generational), and systemic factors that impact our wellbeing. We carry the weight of our past and messages we receive in the words and actions of others every day. I will be a therapist who helps you examine your experiences, thoughts, and feelings in the context of relationships and society to understand yourself as you are and as you want to become. It is normal when doing this inner work to feel sadness, shame, or fear. Together, we can identify diverse coping skills rooted in cognitive, behavioral, dialectical, and emotion-focused therapies as we encounter these emotions. My goal as your therapist is to be present for you, to help you feel seen, heard, and recognize your inherent dignity and self-worth. My clinical areas of specialty are depression, anxiety, healing from trauma, burnout, identity development, chronic illness, and communication skills. My therapy style is warm, empathetic, client-centered, and trauma informed. My approach as a therapist echoes Robert Frost when he said, “The best way out is always through.” In my spare time, I enjoy listening to true crime podcasts and a wide range of music, watercolor, crochet, reading, the outdoors, and learning to cook new recipes. It is a privilege to connect with you and start this meaningful work.
