Dana Secord
Hello! My name is Dana and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Colorado and Texas. I truly believe that one of the bravest things anyone can do is begin to understand their own story. Hopelessness, depression, anxiety, racing thoughts, and emotional pain are just some of the issues many people feel overwhelmed by and struggle with on a daily basis. Oftentimes, people begin to accept these feelings as part of their normal life. As a therapist, my goal is to provide a safe space where clients can feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings, disappointments, and fears without judgment. Everyone faces their own set of struggles, but that does not mean you have to face them alone. I graduated from Texas Wesleyan University with a Master of Arts Degree in Professional Counseling. I have worked in private practice with individuals that are struggling with depression, anxiety, substance abuse, domestic violence, relationship conflict, gender and sexual identity issues, LGBTQ+ issues, as well as personality, mood, and adjustment disorders. Prior to working in private practice, I worked in community health and provided therapy to individuals negatively affected by sexual abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder, anger management issues, bipolar disorder, self-esteem issues, and eating disorders. I work with adults and use an integrative approach to therapy. I encourage clients to express their feelings and help them develop insight into themselves and into their relationships with others. My belief is that each client is the expert on their own life. I believe developing a unique and collaborative approach to therapy provides the most favorable outcome.

My initial training as a therapist was in premarital and marriage counseling, a vital part of my practice that to this day I enjoy very much. I have approximately 20 years of experience and am licensed in the state of Texas. In addition to counseling couples, I have also worked with persons coming out of the sex industry. It is my passion to work with those who struggle with severe trauma and emotional abuse, as well as major depressive disorders, bipolar I & II, schizoaffective, co-occurring and substance abuse disorders. I have a great deal of experience working with dissociative, borderline and personality disorders. I am well-versed and extremely comfortable working with persons of different cultures. My motto is, “reveal the root, expose the lie and heal the wounded spirit.” I utilize a trauma-informed, person-centered, psychodynamic approach in therapy and often incorporate CBT, DBT and mindfulness techniques. I strive to meet the unique and individual needs of each client and adjust my approach accordingly. I am a certified revisioning practitioner, a technique that simulates re-attachment for grief resolution and ego-integration and am certified by the FBI National Academy in resiliency training. I also enjoy training local police departments throughout the Metroplex in critical incident and mental health orientation trainings. I truly consider it an honor and a privilege to partner with you in your journey towards wholeness. My goal is to help you become all that you were created to be!

Carla McGehee
I graduated from Dallas Baptist University May of 2014. I did my Internship at Texoma Community Center (formerly the MHMR of Grayson County) in Sherman, TX as an Intake Specialist. I became a Texas Licensed Professional Counselor 11/2017 No. 71823. I continued at Texoma Community Center for an additional four and a half years as a mental health counselor. I started at Tidemark Therapy as a counselor in May 2020. Now I am looking to transition into my own practice and am looking for clients on BetterHelp to feel empty slots. I have worked with a wide variety of clients. My counseling experience dealt with people struggling with depression, anxiety, loss, trauma, chronic pain, and emotional control. I have had success with clients that have anything from a diagnosed disorder to short-term adjustment issues. I believe that attempts at real change create losses that need to be mourned. I have helped clients to let go of old habits that have been a comfort. In the case of situational loss, I can help with reimagining life after loss, be it the death of a loved one to a loss of a job. I have helped others to redefine their future so they can move on. I have had success with those who have emotional control issues by applying a program designed to help emotional issues surrounding addiction/negative coping. Negative coping can be anything one uses to avoid fear or emotional pain. These can be behaviors and responses that can interfere with healthy functioning. I use concepts of Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I break down the concepts that help provide a way of talking about thinking, without which can get very abstract. I am also very aware of how spiritual beliefs can help with the counseling process. With the client’s permission I am willing to use a client’s belief system to provide support and encouragement to help navigate the counseling process. Sessions are usually 45 minutes long and go at the client’s pace. The sessions are flexible to allow time to deal with any new issues that may come up. The client is allowed to give feedback should they experience discomfort or become emotional. I do not believe in going into all the client’s sensitive experiences in order to counsel them. I strive to never probe areas that are not necessary to work on the client’s identified treatment goals. (These goals are defined collaboratively with the client and therapist’s input.) My goal is to never send a client out the door feeling emotionally torn up, but rather have them leave feeling hopeful. I believe, even if the subject matter is hard, it does not have to negatively affect one’s hope.

How should I prepare for my first therapy session with a Southmayd counselor?
Before seeing your Southmayd therapist, prep for your session by reading to understand the process. You might write a list of questions you want to ask your psychotherapist, any emotional pain you may feel, and the ways in which you hope to improve. When you attend your session, you can let our therapists know if you have any concerns or feel unsure about what to talk about. Southmayd therapists here may help guide you with open-ended therapeutic questions while offering mental health services. The first session will often serve as an intake to get to know you as a person and learn why you're attending therapy.
Should I find a therapist or psychologist for therapy if I feel fine?
Some simply don't feel the need to see a psychologist. However, some people may avoid attending therapy due to stigma or preconceived notions of what it might entail. Although psychologists often support people with mental health conditions, you do not need a diagnosis or specific condition. You can discuss grief, relationship concerns, stress, or life changes and ask for general feedback. A Southmayd licensed clinical social worker may help you gain power over your life and emotions while you navigate day-to-day experiences.
Gaining a new perspective on yourself through various therapies might allow you to improve your self-esteem, work through relationships, and gain a better sense of your mental health goals. The success you may find with a Southmayd counselor can be dependent on your process.
People may also attend therapy for specific motives, such as bullying, an autism diagnosis, a desire to learn mindfulness meditation, personality concerns, trouble with office workers, specific phobias, and many other principles that a counselor can help with.
Is mental health care and therapy with a therapist worth it?
Therapy with a licensed counselor is effective and has the power to change individuals' lives. Each client is at a different stage of their emotional healing journey in life, as each human can be unique in their personality, expression, skills, and goals. A psychologist can target various symptoms, experiences, and personalities to help you feel your best and put you on the path to healing. Unlike advice from a friend, family, or non-professional, a mental health therapist has an understanding of various disorders like ADHD and depression with many hours of experience in treating adults in their practice. For this reason, seeing an evidence based psychologist in Southmayd, Texas can be worth it. Over 41 million adults in the US attend therapy services each year, showing it's a popular option and is proven to be effective.
Southmayd has many clinicians who practice person or client-centered individual therapy in-person and through online sessions to assist clients in their healing journey. If you opt into online therapy, you might also be able to meet with providers all over the United States and change therapists easily at any time. Many people struggling with anxiety and depression, substance abuse, body image issues, and more find therapists that are a good fit for them, feel supported, and gain further insight into their lives through internet-based therapy.
Do therapists judge you in therapy sessions during telehealth appointments?
The boundaries between you and a therapist are in place to help you and them regarding ethical concerns. Mental health professionals are held by ethical standards through the American Psychological Association (APA) and are not allowed to judge or harm their clients. If you are concerned about sharing details about yourself, feel free to withhold personal information. Their job in the therapeutic relationship is to create a safe place, help you gain a deeper understanding of your mental health, and support you. You might consider changing counselors if you don't feel safe or respected.
