Dr. Amy Cuellar
My name is Dr. Amy Cuellar, and I am a licensed psychologist in the state of Texas. I obtained my PhD in clinical psychology (adult track) from the University of Miami and afterwards completed a pre-doctoral internship (general track) at the James A. Haley VA Hospital and a post-doctoral fellowship at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in the Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center. My area of expertise lies in helping people to achieve their visions of recovery from depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, stress, paranoia, and other problems in living so that they lead lives of meaning. Much of my work has focused on helping people overcome barriers in setting, achieving, and sustaining goals in order to live the lives that they want. My theoretical orientations are rooted in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and solution focused therapy. I am an advocate of using CBT in many cases because it has the strongest scientific evidence to support its efficacy in decreasing symptoms. When someone appears to be struggling with adjustment to a life transition, however, I tend to use solution focused therapy as my theoretical approach. Regardless of theoretical orientation, however, my style is always collaborative and based in my unwavering belief that everyone has the capacity to grow, change, and recover. I view myself as a partner on a team with my client, and that my clients’ knowledge about themselves as just as important as my knowledge of how to provide therapy. My goal for clients is for them to learn skills so that they can become their own therapists. I would be honored to be a partner on your recovery journey and look forward to meeting you soon. At this time, I'm scheduling in late evenings to accommodate parental duties and work schedules. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Texas. I've been working primarily with adolescent and adult survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse since 2015. I am certified in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), an evidence-based modality developed specifically for reducing the effects of trauma. The effects of trauma can linger many years after the event, and I am ready to help you process the reminders of your past that still impact you, whether recent or long ago. Because of my work with survivors of trauma, I have also gained experience working with overcoming depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and attachment/intimacy fears. I am a safe person for all people, including individuals on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum and those of diverse (or no) religious beliefs. I am a foster/adoptive parent and have extensive experience navigating the Texas foster care system as well as the additional parenting stressors unique to parenting children who've experienced trauma. I am familiar with Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI), a parenting technique developed for raising children from hard places. Having spent all of my career in education and social services, I am familiar with preventing and addressing compassion fatigue/burnout. Some individuals may feel nervous or vulnerable when beginning counseling, so it's important to me to be a completely safe, non-judgmental, and affirming counselor who can handle hefty topics.

I wake up every day excited and passionate to work with people in psychotherapy. When I think about helping people, I believe that establishing a good therapeutic relationship and giving clients a voice is what helps them the most. I also believe that good listening is the main component of establishing a therapeutic relationship with clients. Although I consider myself as eclectic, I incorporate various therapy techniques into my practice such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Brief Therapy and Mindfulness-based approaches to help my clients. With that said, I am open to client feedbacks and what works best for them. I strive with every client to build a trusting therapeutic relationship where they feel they have a voice and where we collaboratively create a safe space to discuss life challenges and stressors. I have been working as a Licensed Professor Counselor (LPC) for approximately 10 years specializing in grief/loss, anxiety, depression, family/relationship issues, anger management and abuse. I have worked in numerous populations and settings over my career which include private practices, non-profit organizations, agencies, and public schools. Primarily, I work with clients experiencing depression, anxiety, grief/loss, domestic abuses, and anger issues. I am also a Certified Anger Therapist (CART) who is well equipped and experienced to help individuals cope and manage anger problems in a healthier way. My goal is to create an empathetic, brave space to explore emotions, and life experiences and take steps towards living your best authentic life that aligns with your values. I look forward to working with you. Let’s begin the journey!
