I have a passion for supporting and helping others and I want to let you know I honor your decision to seek help. I know this can be a scary experience but I want you to know that I will support you 100 percent. I believe the strongest people in the world are those brave enough to ask for help when they need it. I received my masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Phoenix in 2012. The previous 10 years were spent in Law Enforcement. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Doctorate in Behavioral Health and over ten years of mental health experience. I am also a former active-duty military officer. My education includes a B.S. in psychology, a Master's in Health Service Administration, a Master's in Social Work, and a Master's in Legal Studies. I also have a doctorate in behavioral health (clinical) and five years of integrated care study. I use a holistic approach and solution-focused approach when providing therapy to my clients, which involves assessing if a client has co-morbid issues such as diabetes and depression or chronic pain and anxiety. I believe it is vital to assist clients with health management while addressing mental health issues. I am caring and compassionate and recognize that there is still a stigma associated with seeking mental health treatment. As a result, I appreciate anyone who takes time to care for their state of mind, as it is just as important as maintaining physical health. Additional treatment modalities I use include mindfulness practice, dialectal behavior therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and motivational interviewing. In addition to providing services to the civilian population, I have experience working with the military community, active duty, reserve, National Guard, and veterans. I specialize in treating anxiety, depression, and personality disorders, i.e., borderline personality disorder, bipolar disorders, trauma, sexual abuse, self-esteem issues, and PTSD. I am a military Victim Advocate who completed Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), which provides me with additional skills to assist those who are survivors/victims of sexual assault and to intervene appropriately and prevent the risk of suicidal thoughts and suicidal behaviors. I also have experience working with clients dealing with substance abuse issues, adjustment problems, grief and loss, and work-related stressors.

My name is Chanel Carlile and I am a licensed clinical mental health counselor in the state of Utah. I received my M.Ed. in clinical mental health counseling and B.S. in psychology. My primary focus is on the treatment of anxiety and mood disorders, though I have experience working with a wide array of concerns, including trauma, addiction, and co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Because I have worked in both private practice and community-based mental health settings, I have treated a variety of issues ranging from panic and OCD to personality and psychotic disorders, and feel this breadth of experience has made me a well-rounded clinician. I view therapy as an opportunity to assist you in finding practical tools to help decrease your current distress, while also addressing underlying causes/driving forces of such distress. Therapy is not one-size-fits-all, so I tailor established theories and evidence-based interventions to suit each of my clients’ unique personalities, situations, and values. Although my foundation is based on principles of humanistic and psychodynamic therapy, I also frequently pull from acceptance and commitment, strengths-based, cognitive behavioral, and narrative therapies. While therapeutic approach does matter, research has shown that the best predictor of therapeutic outcomes is not one particular approach or strategy over another, but the therapeutic relationship itself. When I first set out on my own therapy journey, one of the most frustrating things was finding the “right” therapist—someone I clicked with and felt truly seen and heard by. There is power in connection, and I place a lot of value on forming authentic, caring, and respectful connections with each of my clients. I genuinely care about people and firmly believe that each of us is worthy just because we exist. Nothing you could do or say would change that belief. I want to hear about your whole self—the parts that are good, bad, ugly, scary, shameful, boring, average, exciting…I understand that people are complex and nuanced, and I want to help you see that all of those parts have value. When I’m not seeing clients, I can generally be found collaging, crossword puzzling, or enjoying a good spoonful of peanut butter. I love collecting rocks, making up songs for my dog, and taking pictures of the sky. I’m an accomplished procrastinator and master self-roaster. I’ll forever hate putting away the laundry, and I frequently stay up way too late. But hey, I’m only human.
