For over 30 years, I worked as a licensed (LICSW) mental health therapist, mental health manager and founder/director of a non-profit health/mental health support and advocacy organization. I’m a psychodynamically-oriented therapist, meaning I believe we exist on many different levels (physically, intellectually, emotionally, sexually, spiritually, etc.). As such, I'm interested how all those levels interact with one another and, along those lines, how we unconsciously sabotage ourselves without meaning to. Psychodynamically-oriented therapy is not appropriate for all clients, however. Specifically, it is not for clients who are struggling with intense and overwhelming emotions, self-harm and suicidal ideation, psychosis, borderline personality disorder (BPD), addiction and various other issues. Those clients need a very different approach that, optimally, may involve worksheets and tutorials designed to help them acquire the skills to regulate their emotions and achieve their stated goals in the fastest possible way. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) are two of the more popular and effective exponents of the second approach. That's not my preferred approach, however, noting that each therapist has clients they work well with and others who are simply not a good fit. In a very general sense, I’m interested in how a client might express or fail to express their intellectual/emotional integrity and authenticity; in how they can attain a greater integration and capacity for intimacy, spontaneity and creativity; in how they might attain a greater sense of wholeness; and in how the corrosive effect of their unfinished business from the past unconsciously keeps trying to find closure in the present. I'm also interested in the GLBTQ+ community and in human sexuality in general, including shame, guilt and repression. Last but not least, at the existential level, I'm interested in how we are coping with the collective crisis through which we are all presently passing, the metaphoric storm which will likely be bone-crushing in scope, the long-anticipated tsunami that seems to have finally arrived.
