Dorothy Baker
My professional background is extensive and has allowed me to work with many cultures, ages, and stations in life. I come from a teaching and management background, and returned to graduate school later in my career to complete a Master in Social Work. All of my adventures have led me to love clinical work because I am able to help clients from many different backgrounds. My approach to therapy always starts with learning about where my client is right now and why they chose to come to therapy. Once we establish workable and realistic goals, then I can determine which clinical approach may work best. This can be Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance Commitment Therapy, or perhaps solution-focused therapy. Each individual is unique, so one approach may not meet that client's needs. It all depends on what works best for the client

I have worked in the counseling profession for 25 years in several capacities some of which include being a behavioral skills coach, vocational training program coordinator, vocational evaluator, rehabilitation counselor, counselor, director of accessible education, and faculty member. I have a wide breadth of experience in helping people live with and move past a disability or difficult life events. Throughout my experience, I have worked with a wide range of people including people living with various disabilities and conditions. I am passionate about helping people learn who they are and who they want to be. In more recent years, I worked with college students at the community college level. As far as my philosophy and clinical approach, I believe that every individual has the ability to face and address their concerns in pursuit of a healthier, happier, and more peaceful way of life. As a part of practice, I utilize an eclectic approach but I have a strong focus on person-centered, cognitive-behavior, and existentialistic components and an emphasis on solution-focus approaches and strategies that help promote forgiveness, self-compassion, and resilience. If you have any questions, please reach out and ask. I am happy to assist you! I look forward to hearing from you and hope to have the opportunity to work with you soon!

I have experience in helping clients with stress and anxiety, motivation, self-esteem, and confidence, depression, parenting challenges, relationship problems, and adjusting to life changes. The focus of my work is establishing a strong therapeutic relationship as a foundation. Not only will a good connection help lead to the best outcomes, but I recognize that reaching out for help and trusting someone with your story is a courageous, and difficult first step towards change. I will help you find your strengths as well as help you identify areas where you would like to change or improve upon. Together, we will set goals specific to what you need in your current situation, by gaining a deeper understanding of your personal story. Everyone is deserving of a fulfilling life, but so often, our experiences and inner dialogue can get in the way of that. My style is warm, supportive, and through a trauma-informed lens. I will often incorporate a variety of other therapeutic approaches whenever appropriate which can include Motivational Interviewing techniques, Art Therapy approaches, Collaborative Problem-Solving techniques, Mindfulness techniques, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques. I look forward to hearing from you and creating a safe and non-judgmental space to talk!
