Instead of expending energy resisting or denying their emotions toward a difficult concept, it encourages one to accept these emotions as an appropriate response to certain situations and to move forward regardless. This eases the conflict between how a person believes they are “supposed to” feel and how they realistically feel under circumstances to which they are exposed. I am a trained practitioner in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. (EMDR) This adaptive integrative processing approach uses bilateral stimulation and lateral eye movement to strengthen positive neural networks within one’s brain. It helps rescript and establish positive connections about a previously-held negative belief. It reinforces the positive pathway and helps the individual cope with the memory while applying new, positive beliefs about a negative situation. Using a holistic approach is essential in my practice. A person is not their diagnosis. A person is not their addiction. A person is a complex individual who deserves the care and respect that I would hope be shown toward myself or someone that is close to me. My approach to therapy incorporates various theoretical orientations, but with underlying Rogerian principles of client centered treatment. What does that mean? Rogers highlighted the therapeutic relationship as a fundamental key to therapy. Values include empathy, unconditional positive regard, and congruence/authenticity. Therefore, initially in therapy I strive to get to know you, the client. Moreover, I want to learn about your goals for therapy, and how we can collaboratively reach those goals. Based on your goals, I incorporate applicable theoretical orientations such as cognitive behavioral therapy, which explores the way one’s thoughts and feelings impact their behavior; or a similar approach, rational emotive therapy, which identifies self-defeating thoughts and feelings, challenges the rationality of those feelings, and replaces them with healthier, more productive beliefs. I also support behavioral activation, which involves the client regularly scheduling prosocial, enjoyable activities that facilitate coping and improve mood.
