Frequently asked questions
How do I find a therapist nearby?
Simply type in your city, state, or zip code in our search bar above to find a counselor helping people in your area. Finding a counselor near you is helpful if you're seeking in-person counseling. With online therapy, you have more flexibility in choosing a counselor best suited for your needs.
Can therapy help?
Just about anyone can benefit from therapy. Find a counselor using BetterHelp's online platform and start feeling better and more in control of your emotions and your life.
Which therapist is right for me?
Finding the right therapist for you can seem overwhelming, but you can narrow down your search by considering what type of counseling you’d like to pursue. Take a few minutes to read through some counselor profiles to see their different areas of expertise. If you feel like your matched therapist isn’t a right one for you, you switch at any time. It is most important that you feel comfortable with your counselor.
What's an average wait time?
After taking our short questionnaire, you can instantly message your counselor that you’ve been matched to and schedule a time with them for a live therapy session that works for you both. You can send them a message as often as you would like, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In both online counseling and in-person counseling, your counselor will integrate different methods into your treatment plan. For example, CBT is used to challenge and replace negative thoughts (cognitions) with healthy behaviors. Other methods include dialectical behavior therapy, interpersonal, psychodynamic, emotion-focused, and family therapy.
What does counseling cost?
Traditional face-to-face counseling typically costs $150-250 per session, while online therapy with BetterHelp ranges from $100-200 per week (billed every four weeks). With face-to-face therapy, you're paying for one live counseling session per week. With online therapy, you're paying for one live therapy session per week, as well as an ability to send a message 24/7.
What should I ask in therapy?
Consider asking your counselor about your personal goals, triggers, and coping strategies. In therapy, you can explore relationship patterns, past traumas, and state of your emotional well-being with your therapist. It's also helpful to share any setbacks or fears, and request guidance on building support networks. A therapist can also teach you skills to cope with emotional or mental stressors you are facing. Once you start therapy, remember that the therapist is there to help you. If there's not a good fit between the therapist and client, don't feel bad about reaching out to a different provider.
